You know the whole fantasy of the first look? The one where the bride appears for the first time in front of her groom, and his heart skips a beat as he hyperventilates no, cries… cries and hyperventilates at the mere sight of this stunning woman that he is lucky enough to spend the rest of his life with?
We missed that memo.

I’m at it again, hive. I thought I’d signed on the dotted line and was all set to go but then my hairstylist went and upped the bejesus out of her pricing. I wasn’t aware of this when I first went to my trial but her pricing was based on me using the original makeup artist I went to, Katelyn Simkins. And then I decided, Katelyn, the first makeup artist, just wasn’t for me. Here’s a link to my successful hair trial.
So, I’m off and running again. Luckily, Liz, my new makeup artist (who Mrs. Cookie came upon first!) is on the books. But, this coming weekend, I’ll be taking a second stab at my hair. I was happy with the styles I brought along to the first trial, but since then, I’ve added a few more inspiration pictures to my file.
Do I go with the messy, low chignon?

We Sunbeams have had quite the technology update during the past year or so. The latest, getting iPhones, were early birthday presents for the pair of us. Getting them was a terrible experience! Don’t let the Apple store tell you, “We can’t do that here, but AT&T can do that for you no problem.” Because it is a problem. A big one. But let’s move on. Like any good bride, I checked for wedding apps right away. I even checked out this ’Top 8’ list. Sadly I didn’t find any I had to have - and I still want one so bad! Here is a smattering of what I’ve looked over.

Liesl Clark from Claris Photography gives some great advice on scheduling your wedding day formals.

One of the most important but sometimes least favorite parts of the wedding day are the “planned” photos - the “formals” as some may call it. This portion of the day, while essential, is often looked upon as a “grip and grin” section of the wedding that a bride and groom want to just “get through”. At the same time, most everyone will agree that without this part of the day, some very valuable photographs of family and friends would be overlooked and later one may have regrets that they weren’t captured.
This part of the day doesn’t have to be dreaded. With proper planning (ie. scouting of the locations, a thorough shot list provided by the bride and groom, and a detailed photography schedule) the photography needs of the couple and their families can be met without any headache, frustration or confusion.
Communicate early (up to a month or two) with your planner and/or photographer by filling out a “shot list” which is a detailed account of the groups you are hoping to capture.
Honestly, I’ve never wished that I lived in Texas. But if it meant being half as cool as Jamie & Joe, or getting to do a shoot with a photog like Jason Speros, I’d remember the Alamo forever, yo.

Do you know how hard it is to find cute vegan shoes?
Really, realllly hard.
I dream of: kitten heel, toe, mustard yellow or seafoam green shoes for under $200. Is that too much to ask?

Kinda ugly, but in a “totally me” way.
Last Wednesday, I went to visit Mr. Mary Jane’s custom-made ring!
When we finalized the design and initiated the process back in June, the jeweler told us it’d be done around the first of August. We didn’t make any payment then; we’re repeat customers, so I guess they figured we’re good on our word. I was simply told I could come in at any time and pay for the ring, and also give them the engravings I want on it.
I decided to have our wedding date engraved on it, so I dropped off the wedding date and the payment with the Jeweler on Wednesday. (I also decided to get something else engraved on Mr. MJ’s ring… but you’ll have to wait to hear about that because it’s a surprise for him!) But now: we OWNS US A RING! (Though the jeweler is still working on it; hopefully we’ll have it soon.)
But why did I wait so long to pay? I’d had the money for over a week already, figuratively burning a hole in my pocket. Well, Mr. Mary Jane and I left for a trip on Thursday (we’ve been on vacay all this time and are coming home today, actually!), to visit my parents and grandparents. I haven’t seen them since Christmas time, so none of them have seen my ring (except in pictures). Can you blame me for wanting it to be extra-clean and shiny before I showed my mom?

Professional photographers are very passionate about insisting that you shouldn’t ask just any friend with a camera to take your wedding photos. But aren’t they just out to make some money? They are running a business, after all. What’s the real difference between a professional with a fancy Canon camera and your friend with one?
Seattle Bride set out to answer that question and the results are quite fascinating. They asked Cody Ellerd, a professional travel writer with a Nikon D60 to tag along with Joey Hong of John & Joseph Photography at the wedding of Vicky Wu and Chris Nicoll. Cody Ellerd has had a few of her shots make the covers and pages of magazines so she definitely has an eye for photography! To quote her, “If you didn’t budget for a professional photographer at your wedding, I’m the friend you might call to take pictures.”
After her experience with John Hong, Cody has changed her mind about hiring a friend for her own wedding which she is in the midst of planning. To quote her, “I now disagree more than ever with the digital-age adage that “now everyone is a photographer”. Tens of thousands of dollars in education, equipment and experience separate me from the pros. Professional photographers, like any other artists or business owners, need to spend money to make money. When you hire them, you’re helping them pay for their investments.”
An example of Cody’s shot:

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Sorry. I’ve been growing a human. Lots of gross things are happening and it’s kind of a mystery that I still have a husband and friends that want to be around me. I’m looking at these pictures and thinking about how tiny I used to be! I mean, these pictures were like 40 pounds ago! Skip to the end if you want to see an updated pregnancy shot to see what I mean. I’m OVER it. Baby Dumpling is already 7 pounds and I still technically have 4 weeks to go. It’s also 112 degrees in Vegas… happy thoughts happy thoughts happy thoughts…
I feel better.
We left off last time when I was getting in this cool vintage car my dad rented to transport me to the church. After my sister and I piled in, we headed down the road in our big caddy. It’s hot, right??

We decided to do a “first look” for a couple of reasons - mainly, to allow extra time for fun pictures.
Also, since we were together all morning, we’d already cursed ourselves by seeing each other before the ceremony. Oops! It’s a good thing we don’t believe in stuff like that!
The first look gave us time to be giddy about getting ready to walk down the aisle & to also calm each other. We also got to relive prom when I pinned on his boutonniere (successfully, might I add?).
One last kiss from my girls & I was on my way to meet Mr. Q at the end of the pier!

I have gotten quite a few requests to write a post about my wedding dress, and I am happy to oblige! Before I tell my story, I want to thank you for all of your thoughtful compliments on my dress. I didn’t share any details about it until after the wedding, and I was a little worried that my big reveal might be a let down. But I am so happy that you all loved it, and even more ecstatic that you have embraced a dress that strays a bit from today’s “norm”. You guys rock! Anyway, moving on…
When I was about twelve years old, I thought I had found my wedding dress. I clipped it out of a Neiman Marcus advertisement in the newspaper. While I have long since lost that newspaper clipping, its image has remained fresh in my mind: simple, form fitting, and classic. However, when it came time for dress shopping, the more dresses I tried on, the more I realized that I wasn’t fulfilling my vision. I tried on several simple, form fitting, and mostly strapless gowns. All beautiful, but none of them were “it”.
So I hopped online in hopes of finding something, and I found that the possibilities were endless and overwhelming. I did the majority of searching on brides.com, theknot.com, and various wedding planning blogs. Then I found the holy grail for those interested in bridal fashion: Fashionbride’s Weblog. The blog, owned by a former beauty magazine editor, introduced me to a plethora of wedding designers from around the world that I had previously never heard of. While scrolling on its pages, I found my dress.
The dress is made by Spanish designer, Novissima, and featured in its 2008 Adagio Collection.
