Mrs. Stiletto's Picture
Mrs. Stiletto, Chicago Age and Occupation: 26, Non-Profit/Fundraising Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Engineer and Photographer Engagement Date: March 2, 2008 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: The 19th Century Club About Me: My fiance and I love living in the city of Chicago with our cats Basil and Linus, and vow to never move to the suburbs if we can possibly avoid it! We’ve poured ourselves into planning a wedding that reflects our personal style - modern and high contrast with a vintage twist. Blogging keeps me creative, baking keeps me happy, and grande nonfat no foam sugar free vanilla lattes keep me sane.
About Mrs. Stiletto

I randomly decided I “needed” menus and proceeded to invent what seems to be the most time-consuming method for creating said menus. And, considering the fact that I think I just wanted menus because I thought my photographer would take cute pictures of them, I probably could have just made one and pretended after the fact that they were at each place setting.

Rest assured, I’m not that jaded about them and I know they will look cute on the tables, but I did spend the better part of my Saturday working on these, and I’m only 1/3 of the way done.

The principle behind the menus is very simple (which is why it seemed like such a good idea at the time!) - I took green cardstock and cut each piece into thirds horizontally, so that each piece was 2.83″ x 11″. I then scored each piece into quarters for ease of folding. This, my friends, was the easy part… and the part of the process that I did over a month ago and left until now (crunch time!) to finish.

I laid out our menu items in Microsoft Publisher, each item in a 3″ x 2″ rectangle. I then printed the menu “innards” onto white cardstock and used my handy paper cutter to cut each rectangle.

Salad and entree:

Dessert and celebration message:

Each rectangle was taped onto the green card stock, strategically placed so that the heart-shaped hole punch I used would not go through the white card stock. I’m sure there is a much handier, craftier way than double-sided tape to attach the white cardstock. I know that Glue Dots are great, but I didn’t have anything like that on hand this weekend and, to be honest, I don’t want to spend any money on this project! The downside to saving money, however, is the time consuming process of taping everything!

The skinny black and white striped ribbon that I love so much is perfect for tying these closed, and my handy scallop punch strikes again for the menu cover!

Could I have done something easier or have not had menus at all? Of course. Do I regret not testing out putting a few of these together before I cut and scored all of the card stock, leaving me no room for changing my mind? Definitely. But the end product is super cute… and now I only have 90 of these to go!

What unnecessary projects did you end up doing and falling in love with?

these are so cute! I’m putting menus together as I type this (or more like I am procratinating putting them together to type this) and I don’t know whose idea was to inspire us to do one for each guest, but I am MAD AT THEM!

I love! We simply printed out our menus on long rectangular card stock to mimic our inivite. Waste of time & $? -bathroom baskets (although we did get comments)!

Love them! If it makes you feel any better, I am rubber stamping and heat embossing my 225 menus, spent all day Sunday working on them (and as you know, Sunday was gorgeous here in Chicago!) and I’m barely half way thru with the stamping and embossing… Never mind the assembly! We should start a Crazy Chi Town Brides Take On Unnecessary, Excessive Projects support group :-)

SUPER cute menus- did you write the “inners”? I’m doing menus for each place setting, too… but not to this degree… well, hopefully. I’m trying to get over the programs for now. Of course they are complicated!!!

These are super adorable and makes me wish I did menus. Could I make one suggestion, and it’s only because I’m a symmetry freak, I would do the day 09. .09 instead of 9. .09
Seriously those, these are awesome!

Love how the finished product turned out. If you don’t finish them or don’t want to you could always just put 2-3 per table or one at every second place setting. I am planning to do a simple menu but only one per every two places. Since people will not be choosing their meal the day of, I don’T feel like everyone needs his or her own menu. Save yourself some time and some paper and just make them for half the guests.

So cute!! I love the ribbon and heart hole punch…gives them pizzazz. The last panel is such a great idea!

P.S. We have every season of Entourage or Sex & the City on dvd if you need something to get you through the next 90…just sayin’ :)

how about just making up a few menus per table instead of one for every person?

@carrie: Sadly, I jumped the gun awhile back and already cut and scored enough green cardstock for 120 menus…so it would be such a sad waste not to use them, and I don’t have any other use for the cardstock otherwise (at least how its cut)…ah well!
