About Mrs. Labrador

Keeping It Real.

August 3rd, 2009 @ 11:54 am by Mrs. Labrador

Ever since Miss Cowboy Boot wrote about the “love letter box“, I knew I had to have one at my wedding. Mr. Lab and I both think it is important to recognize the fact that there WILL be hard times in our marriage; that it’s not a matter of “if”, but “when”.

In this day and age where something like 40% of marriages end every year, it’s important not to be so naive to think that it could never happen to you. In my family alone, my mother, two older brothers, and older sister have all gone through a divorce. I know of several people my age that have already been married and divorced. During the engagement and wedding planning process, divorce can be the furthest thing from somebody’s mind. But I feel it’s necessary to talk now with your soon to be husband (or wife!) about how you plan to handle the difficult moments in your marriage. It’s all about keeping it real.

No, this realization doesn’t mean I’ll be thinking about divorce all the time. Rather, it means that Mr. Lab and I have made a promise do everything in our power to overcome whatever obstacles that come our way which may potentially lead to divorce. We know many traditional wedding vows imply this promise, but we wanted something that more clearly expresses to our guests that we recognize marriage is hard work and we won’t be taking it lightly. That’s why the love letter box spoke to us.

So, this weekend during a DIY project marathon, I got to work on making our love letter box. I found this little gem at the same A.C. Moore where I found my bridesmaids’ flowers:

Keeping It Real. : wedding diy relationships Dsc0456

It was absolutely perfect for our love letter box! At only $10.99, it was also a good deal. But when I got to the register, a customer who had just checked out handed me her unused 40% off any one item coupon, so it only ended up costing me $6.59!

Once I was home, I began working on a way to customize it. I decided to use brown paint to tie it into our wedding colors and started painting away. I had an episode of Heroes on the computer and a glass of wine (it’s only fitting while working on a box that will house some wine!) while I transformed the box from this:

Keeping It Real. : wedding diy relationships Dsc045601

Into this:

Keeping It Real. : wedding diy relationships Dsc0457

I’m really happy with the way it turned out! We’ll use thin wood nails to hammer the sliding door shut during the ceremony. I’m going to add our wedding date on it somewhere, but I feel like it still needs a little something else. Maybe a quote on marriage that seems fitting for what the box is for?

Anyone have any suggestions on a short and sweet quote that encompasses the meaning of the box? And any suggestions on a relatively inexpensive bottle of wine that will (hopefully) last for many many years?

looooooove this idea. i was trying to figure out a way to incorporate some sort of tradition into the ceremony without the usual sand/candle/wine pouring. this is perfect!

i like coppola wines.. don’t know how long they would last though I had a 6 year old bottle and it was pretttty tasty!

You should paint the inside of the box a bright or light color to make the wine bottle cutout stand out even more.

Cute idea either way though!

How about something simple like. “A deal’s a deal”.

:D

I love this idea. After I saw Miss CB post on this, I showed my FI and we immediately decided we wanted to do this.

For wines, what about a vintage port? It’ll keep for years and get better with age. :)

I love it. Great job. I think we’ll be making a box for our wine and love letter ceremony too. My favorite wine is the Chateau St. Michelle Cabernet.

we bought a bottle of wine on our honeymoon to Italy that we’re planning to drink on an anniversary. I would go to a big retailer and ask for advice there.

that box is really cute!

I was looking into a wine that would last many years and ran across this article: http://www.wineloverspage.com/wineadvisor1/tswa060116.phtml - it says that a fortified wine called Madeira is your best bet if you won’t be able to maintain cellar conditions for your wine. Good luck!

I also stole this idea from Miss Cowboy Boot for my wedding a few weeks ago! We went to a great local wine store, where the expert said that bordeaux was the best way to go. I want to keep it in the box from the ceremony (we got our box at Hobby Lobby but also saw good ones at the wine store), but it’s living in our wine fridge right now and it may stay there indefinitely with a huge “don’t drink me yet” sign to make sure it lasts well. Main things she said were to keep it cool and not to jostle it a lot. Everyone loved this part of the ceremony, though we asked the preacher to keep the words more upbeat and less focused on potential divorce. If you’re having a reading or a special song during the ceremony, I would recommend putting a phrase from that on the box.

I love random acts of kindness! I always give away my unused coupons at Michaels & BB&B. I love this idea. The box you picked is great, & doesn’t take up too much space (a real conern for us!). How about painting the little indented wine bottle in your wedding pink color? You can email Chicago master sommelier, Alpana Singh, through her blog for wine recommendations. We had to write love letters at Pre-Cana, so maybe we’ll do this on our 1st anniversary. I bought 2 boxes of stationery to give my husband-one w/ our new shared last initial and one with his 1st initial & in the first card, I wrote him a love letter.

Friends of mine wanted to incorporate this ritual
in their wedding, but they don’t drink wine. They modified it by writing their love letters to each other, then rolling them up like scrolls and placing them inside an empty bottle during the ceremony. Then they corked the bottle and sealed it with sealing wax, and the bottle sits on their mantle next to one of their wedding photos. They’ll follow the same idea as with the box, and open it either if their marriage is struggling or on a meaningful anniversary.

As far as a quote goes, how about something like

How fair is thy love… how much better is thy love than wine! - Song of Solomon 4:10

or

Drink to me only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss but in the cup,
And I’ll not look for wine.
-Ben Jonson

@ramosianchica: Pablo Neruda is my favorite ever! Not just because he’s Chilean lol

Sorry, but the webpage you linked says .38% (zero-point-thirty-eight) of marriage end per year, not 38%.
