Mrs. Sprinkle, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 26, Preschool Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Television Production/Writer Engagement Date: December 24, 2008 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: The Marvimon House About Me: I'm a Bay Area native trying to create a life for myself (and my fiance, and our three cats!) in the vast city of Los Angeles. I love vegan red velvet cupcakes, pilates ,and mid-century furniture. Mr. Sprinkle and I met when my band toured through his city (we bonded over cake and a mutual love of Morrissey) and we are getting married on the four year anniversary of our first date. When I am not teaching preschool (or blogging!) you can find me perfecting recipes, petting kittens, hiking in Griffith Park, and overusing exclamation points. We are planning a vegan, green-as-possible, DIY wedding, and I couldn't be more excited to share all of the details!
About Mrs. Sprinkle

Project: Practice!

August 3rd, 2009 @ 6:08 pm by Mrs. Sprinkle

Our original rehearsal dinner plan, from months and months after we first booked our venue, was to throw a backyard party in our neighbor’s large yard. We were also going to rehearse there, since our venue could not guarantee there would not be another wedding on the Friday before ours. Both of our families were fine with this, and everyone seemed to understand it would be really hard to rehearse in a restaurant, and our budget couldn’t handle another big dining expense!

Then we got word that the event that was planned at The Marvimon the day before our wedding was canceled, and the space was ours to use for an hour to rehearse! We were still going with the neighbor’s yard idea until I noticed our lovely tree. And our cute fence. I decided we had the time and resources to get our (rented) backyard nice and cleaned up before the wedding. We are now looking at a scaled down version of a rehearsal dinner, in our tiny backyard. Still super casual, still in a yard, just smaller and a bit more personal.

Hopefully, this will be the last change. I want to send out invites soon! However, some family members are still a bit wary of the idea.

I know that it is traditional to go celebrate at a fancy restaurant, but that just isn’t us. (And really, the nearest “fancy vegan” place is an hour from our neighborhood!) We are working on some sort of compromise, but until then what we are really working on is our backyard!

In preparation for the event we have been trying to get our landscaping sorted out. When Mr. S. and I moved into our house (a year ago this month!), our landlord promised some yard work come springtime. We are well into summer and that work never happened. Now I get to decide… Do I call him up and bother him about his promise? Or just go ahead and lay down some rocks and pathways myself? He said we can do whatever we want to the space while we are waiting for him… and we have been waiting a long time.

The last few weekends have been spent raking, pulling weeds, and planting. We started a small garden, and I turned half of my hanging lanterns into hanging planters.

Project: Practice! : wedding decor rehearsal 12 1

The beginning of our small garden. Basil, peppers, chives. Also, our many baby succulents for other wedding purposes!

Project: Practice! : wedding decor rehearsal 22 2

Votive candle lanterns and hanging planters. Next weekend we plan to have the entire length of fence finished.

Project: Practice! : wedding decor rehearsal 32 3

Baby succulents!

Project: Practice! : wedding decor rehearsal 42 4

Our rehearsal dinner plans have changed a dozen times. It has been hard to please everyone and meet expectations, yet also have a casual gathering that we will enjoy and be proud of!

Did you find it hard to balance the expectations of family members with your own desires while planning the rehearsal? Or did you give up complete control to someone else?

FMIL Frenchie wanted a really small RD and Mama Frenchie wanted to invite ALL the out of town guests :-/ Mr Frenchie and I had to find a venue we liked but also cheap enough to feed all those ppl w/o angering FMIL Frenchie. It was hard but since we picked on of FMIL Frenchie’s favorite San Diego restaurants I think she was happier :)
P.S. I love the succulents!

We are doing the rehearsal dinner in our backyard too! I know some people may not be used to it, but I love the idea that it will casual and comfortable. I love your succulents! I’ve been thinking of using succulents for our centerpieces just because I have loved them on all the blogs lately.

These are fantastic! I bet the herbs will perfume the air.
I wish we could do a backyard rehearsal dinner we just don’t have the lawn space.

The rehearsal dinner was out of our hands. We went from an amazing, quaint 5-star place to a chain adjoining a movie theater. The food there is usually good, but for the rehearsal dinner, the ONLY vegetarian option was kinda yucky. You do what you want–you are working very hard & serving as hostess for something the groom’s parents usually take care of. As a vegetarian, I get kinda sick of catering to the carnivores all of the time. Your yard really looks great so far, but call your landlord to pitch in–delegate, delegate, delegate!

We are also thinking of doing the same thing and I’d love to hear some ideas. Almost half of our guests will be coming in from out of town so it is important for us to include everyone who can make it. Does anyone have any pictures/details of a great outdoor rehearsal dinner? I’d love to find other couples who have been able to accommodate such a large group for a great price.

Your backyard is so cute! :) That’s great that you can get into the space the night before to rehearse.

I gave control of the rehearsal over to my in-laws. I decided the food and venue didn’t matter too much to me. I told them it could not be more than a 15 min drive from the rehearsal venue or the hotel. So far all I know is the location (a brewery) a 4-course dinner with matching brews, and we’re eating at 6:30. Fine. with. me!

ah! we’re considering the smog shoppe which is the sister location to the marvimon! absolutely GORGEOUS if I may say so myself! that being said, I think it’s great that you’re having your rehearsal dinner at home, it will separate the event from the big day. rehearsal dinners, in my opinion, are meant to be personal and intimate and with the beautiful details that you’re incorporating, it’s going to be a HIT!

keep comfort in mind for your guests but as stay true to YOUR desires :)
