Mrs. Candy Corn, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 24, Senior Editor/Writer & Freelance Illustrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Inventory Manager for a Music Publisher Engagement Date: September 1, 2004 Wedding Date: October, 2008 Blogging Since: May 6, 2008 Venue: Pennsylvania Museum of Archaelogy and Anthropology About Me: I enjoy people watching (especially in New Jersey malls), obsessive collecting, drooling over contemporary art, browsing flea markets for vintage finds and eating an absurd amount of cheese. In my Philadelphia abode, I create mixed media artwork and one-of-a-kind home accessories in the company of my farmer-tanned husband, our Westiepoo (Betty White), our three rabbits (Cadbury, Willie Nelson and Applesauce) and our two frisky chinchillas (Ethel Funk and Maude).
About candycorn

During the weeks leading up to our wedding, I gave myself a ton of DIY projects that I knew in my wedding-obsessed heart were absolutely unnecessary, but I insisted on doing them anyway.

Did anyone really notice the VIP seating labels I had made for our immediate family? Probably not. Did the French guests notice I made cake signs especially for them or did they just grab the first flavor they spotted? I’m going to go with the latter on that one. Did all of our guests notice I had a photo of them with Mr. Candy Corn or me on the back of their place card to add a personalized touch? Yeahhhhh, no.

Instead of getting myself bent out of shape that our basket of programs was still pretty much full after the wedding and our Flickr account was lacking in photos from our guests, I embraced my inner blue & brown bird-themed wedding geek and told myself that it didn’t matter if people didn’t notice all of the details or that they weren’t all captured on camera. What mattered was that Mr. Candy Corn and I had a wedding that was totally “us” (not just “me”, I swear!) and that we had our family and friends there to support us. Even if they neglected to indulge in the box of candy corn at the bar (although honestly, who really likes candy corn besides me?).

These are just some of the little details of the day. There were many that weren’t captured, but they will still be remembered just the same!

We offered our guests nine different flavors of Jones soda to choose from for our toasts. Even though we had an open bar, Mr. CC and I aren’t drinkers, so we wanted to be able to toast with something we would actually enjoy drinking. We decided that the personalized Jones soda would make for a great keepsake and would also add some color to the room.

The sodas were definitely approved of by Mr. Candy Corn’s little brothers, who each drank a handful of different flavors throughout the night, which resulted in a lot of hyper dancing and blue tongues.

Mr. Candy Corn went with green apple and I chose cream soda. Nom nom nom. If you hadn’t made the connection, those are our silly love struck faces on the label. There was also a message to our guests on the back, thanking them for joining us on our special day.

We had blue and brown straws for our guests to sip the soda with, but I decided to spice up my H2O by adding a little straw lovin’. We were surprised to be greeted by a little wooden Buddha statue that my brother placed on the table for us. Our favorite part of the museum was the Buddhism Galleries, so it was a really sweet gesture on his part to bring a little bit of that to our table since our reception was in the Egyptian Gallery (which was also super fantabulous!).

Blue bubblegum sounded like a slightly repulsive flavor to me, but judging by the kids’ tongues throughout the evening, it must’ve been blueriffic! Yes, I just made up a lame word for the hive. You know you love me.

Coffee, tea and cake ended up sharing this snazzy blue & brown table. I was much more interested in the cake part, but I live in a world where cake beats coffee any day of the week. Especially chocolate chip cake, which I didn’t get to indulge in because it was all gone by the time I moseyed on over to the table. I’m not bitter at all. Nope. Not one bit.

Who am I kidding, the berries & cream cake totally had it going on, too.

I think our caterer did a great job setting up the table and they were so sweet to keep our wedding colors in mind and did their best to make sure everything was perfect, down to the very last detail.

How awesome is this guy? I would die a happy woman if I had him in my living room to hang out with while I watched Bravo marathons.

I thought my Ann Wood-inspired bird illustrations were a pretty cute way to inform our guests what cake flavors were available, since there were quite a few.

I was surprised to see the mini green button poms spicing up the silverware, because it was something simple & sweet that I would’ve never thought to do. Our caterer went above and beyond to make sure I wouldn’t have to worry about setting anything up, and they really went that extra step to make things just “pop” in subtle ways that didn’t go unappreciated.

This was one of our faux Smith & Hawken Manzanita branches, which I hung birdseed eggs from and had resting in a tall cylinder vase filled with coffee beans (which smelled delish).

Our guestbook table for our photobooth was brought to life with these adorable decorative eggs that I snagged on sale at Smith & Hawken. I had brought the eggs with me to the venue, but I had no idea how to incorporate them into the decor, so I just threw them back in our box of random wedding junk and gave up on including them. I’m not even sure whose idea this was, but I’m going to assume either the museum’s event coordinator or our amazing head caterer gal came up with this fun solution.

A few weeks before our wedding, I printed our chair labels on the pre-made signs that Michaels sells. I was losing steam creatively and figured it would be good enough, even if I had to shell out some dough on overpriced ribbon and perforated paper. I realize our guests were already quite aware of both of our names, but I still thought it was a sweet touch.

In addition to surprising us with the mini Buddha, my brother had also placed two Egyptian masks at our table (since our reception was in the Egyptian Gallery). He knows me well and must’ve been thinking that they would make for some great photo opportunities, and he was right (more on that later!). We now have the masks hanging in our hallway and I still parade around the apartment wearing mine from time to time.

We didn’t have a fancy schmancy cake serving set because we figured our guests would only be paying attention for a matter of seconds (knowing how fast Mr. Candy Corn snarfles cake), so I wasn’t going to worry about obsessing over an engraved server. No regrets—the caterer’s serving set did the job just fine!

When a girl spends four years being engaged, she is bound to develop certain obsessions. One of mine was Ann Wood’s cake toppers. I snagged “The Blue Roses” pair early in our planning and am so thankful that I didn’t discourage myself from making the purchase. She was a doll to work with and the topper encompassed our style and snazzed up the lovely simplicity of our wedding cake.

Our cake had three layers of flavors and was not-so-subtly inspired by April Reed’s beautiful blue & brown creation. I suppose that was my something borrowed and something blue!

Our centerpieces provided bursts of green within clusters of birch cylinders in a variety of heights. Surrounding the flowers was our menu, along with my table number bird drawings. Sorry for the cluttered set-up on this table, they looked a lot better in person. Pinky swear.

I loved the little poms, grass and moss in the birch cylinders. We saved some of these to leave out around our apartment and they never fail to bring a smile to my face.

Our table linens were light blue with dark brown, surrounded by dark brown wooden chairs. We could have gone with white chairs, but I thought the brown meshed better with our theme.

I just realized I never ate my piece of bread! Hmmm, maybe Mr. Candy Corn stole mine when I wasn’t looking…

The light blue napkins were gussied up with our photo reminder postcards and egg soap favors. Luckily none of the guests mistook the soaps for candy.

Although a lot of our details weren’t photographed (bathroom baskets, moo cards, tree decor with Mrs. Shortcake’s hand-crafted birds, my bouquet, etc.), I hope you all still enjoyed getting a brief peek into our wedding deets! Reliving all of the little moments with you guys & gals gives me a constant reminder that I got to marry the man of my dreams, which inevitably makes me do a happy dance in my seat on a weekly basis!

Wow, everything looks so great. I love your attention to detail. All the little things really make your reception special. The little birds are the cutest thing ever–and I love carrying that theme through with the eggs on the guest book table.

I love the Jones soda!!!! And pretty much everything else. ;) You did a fabulous job! I am especially loving the way your napkins are sitting on the tables… the catering manager at our venue blatantly ignored our wishes and set our napkins up in the cheesiest way possible!

I’m so glad you posted this, Mrs. CC! I felt that while many of my details were appreciated, others went unnoticed by guests and the camera lens!

For example, after my concerned dad practically threatened our poor ushers to only give one program per couple, several were left in the basket. Our photographer only got a couple shots of them as well, and when I mentioned this to him later, he asked me to mail him the extras so he could take more detailed shots! (Maybe this is something you could ask your photog as well?)

I also ordered a beautiful, hand-painted ceremony directional sign that my well-intentioned dad placed in a less-than-obvious spot by the chapel. Not many guests saw it, but it did make for some great photos that my hubby and I appreciate after-the-fact!

Details are funny. You never know what guests will go crazy over and what will go unnoticed in the rush of the day!

Ahhhhh your details were AWESOME. I think the thing about details is that they’re there for YOU as much as for the guests… details and little stuff like that (like the photo of your vows with the handwriting at the top!) are just my favorite. I always notice stuff like that when I go to weddings.

And now, despite the fact that it is 9:58am, I am craving some cream soda! Mm! I think that’s a great idea for non-alcoholic fun and colorful toasts!

Mrs. Candy Corn, I am so in love with your wedding.

@Andie:
We set up a Flickr.com site for our guests to upload to. I definitely recommend Flickr, it’s very affordable and super easy to use!

@Mrs. Hot Cocoa:
hahaha awww you are too cute!

@LatteLove:
I found the birch bark on Ebay after months of searching. It arrived with some forest debris but it was worth it :)

@Miss Duckling:
We ordered moo cards with images of Mr. CC and I on the back with each guest (unless we didn’t have pics with them) and then I printed out a label for the front of the card with the guest’s name for the placecard :)

@Vic004:
Thanks so much!!!

@msgirard:
Yep, the bird prints are all available for sale in my Etsy shop, along with many other critters :) If you have any commissioned critter/birdie needs, I’m yer artsy gal! xoxo

@Miss Hot Sauce:
Thanks so much. I love your user name, even though I hate hot sauce, the mister is in love with it and it has made me grown to appreciate the hot sauce awesomeness.

I don’t even know where to start. Your details are so amazing! Just the fact that your wedding was in this beautiful museum gave it such a magical, kid-like feel. From the personalized Jones colas to the birch and bright green centerpieces, everything looks so cool together but not overly match-y. I love it all!

“Attention to detail is the difference between excellence and mediocrity” (Not sure who to credit that too..) I would bet there ARE some who noticed allllll of your amazing details… I have a very critical eye, and surely would have appreciated everything… I bet your guests will be comparing your wedding at every reception they EVER attend… “Candy Corn had this and this and would have never missed that…” and ON and ON! Way to go, well worth the effort!

I agree that it’s okay for some details, in the end, to be “for the couple”, even if guests don’t appreciate it. After all, it made the ceremony and reception complete in *your* mind, if that makes sense. And it gave you joy!
