Taxi Cab Getaway

August 4th, 2009 @ 2:28 pm by Mrs. Star

For me and Mr. Star, wedding day transportation was pretty much a no-brainer. One of the wonderful parts of having our wedding in the middle of Manhattan is that it’s never hard to get around. In fact, transportation abounds for those of us without our own wheels!

It was never a part of my wedding dreams to have a big, fancy limo or a sleek vintage car to drive us around that day; although don’t get me wrong, peeps, those options are gorgeous, too! But a part of having our wedding in Manhattan was sacrificing the things that weren’t a top priority in order to fund things like our beautiful, but expensive loft space!

And what form of transportation could be more classic New York City than a yellow taxi cab?

So I scoured the internet for some totally fab pictures of other cab-loving brides, and this is what I came up with:

How gorgeous is this shot, with the checkered wall as a backdrop?

So classy in black and white.

Aww, how sweet is the “just married” on that cab?

So I tossed around the idea of renting a vintage checkered cab for the day, like the cabs that were in these pictures, but after getting quotes of several hundred dollars for just a few hours, I decided that we’ll be hailing our own cabs to get to the ceremony and then home again from the reception. I figure any cab driver will be willing to stop for a pretty lady in a fabulous white dress, right? So here’s a shot with a modern cab:Taxi Cab Getaway : wedding accommodations Rmw0845

I think we’re going to get some great shots of us in front of the cabs, and it will still feel like a treat for us to ride around in them all day because we hardly ever take cabs otherwise! That’s right, the Star household mostly gets around on foot power. :)

My only concern was making sure my dress stays taxi-dirt-free, so I’ll be bringing some clean towels to sit on and put beneath our feet to protect it! Some of my friends and family think we’re really strange for just riding in cabs on our wedding day, so we’ve definitely gotten some weird looks for it.

What do you think? Are you having anything out-of-the-ordinary for your wedding day transportation?

I love it! I think the vintage cab idea is really cool, but it sort of defeats the purpose of saving money. I think you guys’ll have a great time traipsing around in regular old cabs!

Star, there are a few more grab bride & cab pics — our photographer took them! — in this Knottie bio.

This is what we were planning on doing! I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it :) We got some weird looks for it too.

But our transportation plans have changed because of a friend/client of my parents generously offering us free limo service - otherwise we definitely would just do the cab thing.

i think that’s a great idea. my friends got married at manhattan penthouse near union square and walked to their place on the east side in true nyc fashion (which you mentioned)–walking! it happened to be fleet week and they got lots of cheers and goodwill from passersby!

Why would you use anything other than a cab for a Manhattan wedding? Good choice! :)

I think this is a really cool idea. We did some wedding photos downtown in our city and the contrast between our formal wear and the urban/street stuff was really cool. I think it’s the perfect NYC wedding photo-the bride hailing a cab! ;)

What a perfect plan! I think a lot of brides and grooms are opting out of extravagant cars. When you compare the costs, it often makes a lot of sense to choose otherwise. I think you will both have a lot of fun and the pictures of you hailing a cab in your dress will be perfect!

That will make for some awesome photos! I agree, a cab is a real treat when you’re used to walking everywhere.

that’s what we’re thinking of doing too.. tho i might get a black town car to take us from the hotel where i’m getting dressed to photos in the park and the ceremony. it’s at 4pm and there never seem to be any cabs at that time of day.. i don’t want to be freaking out looking for a cab worried about being late..
but a yellow cab will definitely be our ride at the end of the night!

Ha, like nybride09 says, the only problem (esp if you have tons of guests all looking for cabs) is if you are looking for one during weekday rush hour! But at other times as long as its not raining, you shouldn’t have any trouble, so why not? I would do the same thing. We are getting married in a mountain area and the reception is about 1 mile from the ceremony, so I just figured someone would squeeze us in their car. Although my original dream was to rent a Vespa to get us between the two - I couldn’t find a place in Colorado to rent one, if you can believe that! Boo!

Our photographer’s website has a great, classic NYC cab pic in his banner shot! I’m totally thinking of doing that as well…

Miss Politico

Miss Star, the Politicos will be hailing DC’s finest cab from our house on Capitol Hill to our church in Dupont Circle. Yes, others think it is weird, but I don’t care. And it’s perfect since our first meeting was in a DC cab!
