About Mrs. Yorkie

Treats for Our (Weary) Travelers

August 4th, 2009 @ 4:26 pm by Mrs. Yorkie

Hi there… um, it’s me again. It’s been a bit longer between posts than I expected. Life is just now starting to settle into a comfortable routine, so I expect to begin posting again with more frequency. (I promise!)

In case you could use a little reminder, I last left off sharing about the days leading up to the wedding and the half-finished wreaths that needed wrapping up. Well, another one of our last-minute list items included assembling and delivering our out-of-town bags. (This was one detail that I’d actually considered nixing as the clock counted down.)

Knowing the lengths that many of our guests went through to get to Miami, I’m sure glad that we took the time to put the welcome bags together. You see, wicked weather in the Dallas area two days before the wedding caused the cancellation of more than 400 flights. So many of our West Coast guests were affected, including poor FIL Yorkie who spent the night camped out on the floor in LAX. Mr. Y’s cousins from Northern California made it into town a mere two hours before the ceremony! Thank goodness, though, everyone eventually got here safely.

As anxious as a trip to Walmart tends makes me, I managed to find just about every ingredient for our 20 OOT bags at the gigantic superstore. (There’s just something about huge places crammed with so much stuff and so many people in it that makes me a bit uneasy.) So, the weekend before the wedding, with Mama Yorkie by my side, I sucked it up and piled a shopping cart full of wedding week necessities.

Our bags included:

  • 2 bottles of water
  • Pepperidge Farm Goldfish
  • Jumbo chocolate-covered pretzels
  • Miami postcard
  • Florida road map
  • Brochures with discounted admission to local attractions
  • Welcome note (not pictured)

Goldfish for the kiddies!

The maps and brochures were collected at a turnpike rest station.

Every once in a while, an unbelievable deal comes along that just makes me super excited for finding it. You know, like snatching up a fantastic pair of shoes at a next to nothing price. Well, Walmart afforded me one of those so-excited-I-could-scream moments. Those bags of chocolate-covered pretzels tied in colored raffia… um yeah, $1.50 each!!! Score! Needless to say, I immediately squirreled away 20 bags. (Thinking about it still puts a smile on my face. Sad, I know!) :)

All of the goodies were packaged up neatly in kraft paper bags, topped with a strip of decorative paper, and tied closed with a bow. Definitely worth it!

Will you be providing something special for your traveling guests?

We are for sure providing OOT bags. The wedding is going to be in Jamaica! So, we’re still decided on what will be in the bags, but we have to do them! Any suggestions??

I am doing OOT baskets, that include a bottle of wine, two throw away glasses, bottled water, chocolates from a local supplier, homemade chex/snack mix, and ‘a morning after kit’ including Advil, Rolaids, mints, band aids, and hand sanitizers. Oh, also little travel maps of the area. We are getting married in the White mountains.

My biggest decision…..red or white wine?? Suggestions, wish I could do both…but no way!

@Kimmy: White would probably be your best bet. A mild chardonnay, or Pinot Grigio would be your best bet of pleasing everyone.

I’m doing them but not looking forward to them as about 75% of our guest will be out of town, which means making close to 75…yikes!

When do you give the OOT bags? Do you arrange for the hotel to deliver them? What about out of towners staying with family, do they get a bag too? Is this a rehearsal dinner item??? HELP!

@Mrs. Arboretum: Most brides deliver them to the hotels to be distributed when the guests check-in. If you have guests staying lots of different places (multiple hotels, multiple houses) it can get a little squirley delivering all of them, but is mostly your perogative.

Most hotels arrange for the baskets to be delivered. And Jackie, thanks! I thought white too, but the wedding is in September(fall=red?), do you think a white is the best? there are no fridges in the rooms….so it would not be chilled?

we made huge baskets of local foods/beverages for each condo (our guests rented serviced apartments) plus individual little notes and an info pack to keep them updated abt wedding festivities.
we also provided a cell phone per couple as it was a foreign country.

cost us a fair bit, but every item was utilized!

@Kimmy: If you’re leaning more towards red, maybe a nice light Pinot Noir. They can be more mild, and easier to drink than other reds. Just keep in mind, buying bottles of wine for every OOT bag is going to end up being pretty pricey. I know of a good cheaper Pinot you can get at the grocery store though. But the name is alluding me! :(

This is a great OOT bag! I like the idea of visiting the local visitor center to score free brochures!

P.S. I’m a big fan of Pepperidge Farm Goldfish! They helped me stay awake through long hours of studying in college. ha!

I really love your OOT bags, we will be having over HALF of the guests in from out of state (we’re Fla residents also) so these will be very important. I really like how you included all the maps for guests who were spending more time in town.
Great job!

My fiance doesn’t think they are necessary, but I want to make them. We won’t have too many OOT guests so I don’t mind. I’ll convince him somehow. I really like the ones you made. Good ideas.
