“Eternity” Band

August 5th, 2009 @ 10:32 am by Mrs. Sunbeam

Finding a wedding band has become my never ending journey, and time is not on my side. I’ve tried on everything under the sun, from plain, to decked out in diamonds and haven’t found anything that I’d want to wear for all of eternity along side my e-ring. As you saw before, my e-ring is simple. I love the solitaire diamond stealing the scene on my finger and I’ve felt like the solitaire diamond gets lost in a sea of sparkle when a diamond eternity band is added beside it. A plain white gold band could work, but if I wear it solo, my ring finger would feel like a pretty blank canvas. About a month ago I was struck with an option I hadn’t even considered …

A page torn from Martha Stewart Weddings.

A white enamel ring! A thin white enamel ring could look so nice next to my solitaire e-ring and add interest while not competing with my diamond. I’m leaning more towards a style like the top stacked ring, below. The metal would be white gold to match my e-ring.

If you are anything like the jewelers I’ve encountered, you’re now sending me mental waves about how fragile enamel is. Yes, I’ve heard, but I’ve never actually experienced enamel cracking, and I sort of believe the metal edge and buying something towards the expensive end of enamel jewelry will help ensure the enamel lasts.

So I’d love to know, do you have any experiences with enamel rings? Would I be repairing it every few months or do you think if that’s what I love, I should go for it? Anyone with an enamel wedding band out there?

I’ve been hunting for a wedding band too and had not even seen this option out there. Now I’m dying to try on an enamel ring! Very cute, and different.

I think this would look really cool and is a really interesting idea. However, I’d be worried about it cracking, especially if it was a piece I’d be wearing every day.

I don’t really know much about enamel jewelry, but I had another idea that may work (or may be crazy!). How about a half eternity band? You can wear it on the plain side when you wear it with your engagement ring, and flip it over to the side with diamonds when you’re wearing just the band.

Cute! Like you were saying in your post… I’d worry about cracking. But (also as you said), you get what you pay for! These are gorgeous.

They are beautiful! What a cool idea. Maybe you could buy two to make sure that if something happened you’d have a back up. Especially if it’s something that may not be available at all times. I wish that I’d known about this option before I got my wedding ring and that it would have worked with my e-ring. It’s just so cool!

i think it’s definitely a unique idea. I think that if it’s what would make you happy, then go for it, you’ll just need to be more careful with it than more traditional ring.

I feel your pain! I have a simple round cut solitare with a white gold band. SO MANY of the bands I tried on with it looks strange, I think because my e-ring is so simple. I finally found one that I loved, but it was a struggle (who knew it could be so hard).

I have no clue how much enamel bands are - I mean, worst case if you have a lot of problems with it, you could always make a change if it wasn’t incredibly expensive. (I know that the wedding band is sentimental so it would be a bummer to change it after the wedding, but it does need to be functional).

Curious to see what you end up with :)

I had the exact same problem!! My e-ring looks exactly like yours! You would think that finding a simple white gold band would be easy… It was totally not! We finally found one that I love that looks great with my ring. White gold with a small strip of tiny diamonds. I’m curious, too, to see what you end up with!

Well, just how sentimental of a person are you? Enamel doesn’t crack in your experience probably because you are not whacking it into things everyday, like you would if it were on your finger. I would say “go for it,” with the caveat that you remember it may break and you may need to replace it later.

But if you’re open to other ideas, you could try a white gold ring with some sort of filigree engravings on it which would give it more visual interest. But I think a plain white gold band on its own is beautiful, too: simple, to the point. :)

I think that if you love it and you realize that it might not last forever - go for it. These are beautiful, and it might just mean that you’ll have to slip it off when you’re playing sports or working out!

I have several enamel rings, and the thing that destroyed them was water. I would wear them in the shower, and over time the enamel got pitted and started breaking near the joins to the metal. The damage appeared within a year of wearing them. I think it would have stood up longer if I hadn’t worn them in water. They sure are beautiful, but I don’t think I would choose such a thing for my wedding ring. I like to leave my rings on all the time or I’ll forget them!

So pretty! I think it would look beautiful. But I’m not familiar with enamel so that isn’t very helpful. I just know that I am very hard on my hands and rings, but I think it depends on the person.

I LOVE enamel everything - jewelry, kitchen stuff, you name it!

I think it should be pretty durable, right? I would go for it :)

I have a love affair with enamel too, but I’ve found - like chelseamorning - that water wears at it over time. Not to say it’s not a good idea - it’s an abolutely beautiful idea! - you just have to be a little more cautious about it than you would with a metal band.

It def pretty and unique, but the jeweler is right it will wear and crack adn flake over time. The other thing to consider is what happens when you need to get the white gold replated? If you can get it re-enameled easily (and inexpesivley) at the same time… then maybe it doesnt matter so much that its fragile. On the flip side, if it means replating your white gold is going to be even more difficult, maybe look for another alternative.

You could try what I’m doing, I found a ring that will go ok with my ering for about $350 on overstock.com. Then, when we get the money saved up (probably for an anniversary, although I honestly have no idea chipping in to pay for it) I’m going to get a band custom made for my ring.

I LOVE those rings! If it wears over time you could always get it repaired right? I say go for it.

I’ve never seen an enamel ring before, but I love it! So different and really classy.

There’s a new type of ring that’s very similar to that but it isn’t actually enamel. It’s much sturdier than enamel and isn’t supposed to crack. I’m trying to find the name of it. That being said, you CANNOT resize it, similar to tungsten and titanium. Also, if it does need to be fixed, you have to send it to England (where the company is that makes these enamel-like rings). I’ll see if I can find the name again.
