Mrs. Swan, New York City Age and Occupation: 31, Legislative Representative Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Finance Guy Engagement Date: August 9, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2009 Venue: Battery Gardens About Me: I am an un-crafty but resourceful, Caribbean-born but New York-raised woman who's been known to analyze "Dancing with the Stars" and “So You Think You Can Dance”, buy stinky cheese, and use way too many parentheses. I keep lists for fun, am constantly daydreaming of my next international travel adventure (four continents down, three to go), debating sports (let’s Got Mets/Giants!) and dancing around my apartment to stay sane. I am excited to share our wedding planning journey as I hope to plan a streamlined, personal, and fun wedding with the greatest life partner I could ever imagine, Mr. Swan.
About Mrs. Swan

Looking Ahead

August 5th, 2009 @ 2:44 pm by Mrs. Swan

With the preparations pretty much close to being done and things beginning to move closer towards the wedding, I feel like I’m in a bit of a holding pattern here. I don’t really feel like I can resume life as I know it just yet because I feel like I’ve got to put any extra energy I have towards finalizing the wedding planning. At the same time, I’m daydreaming. Oh yes, I’m daydreaming about a time when I will not have to travel for work OR have to partake in any wedding planning. This process has been a lot of fun for me, but I am definitely ready to move on. So, what am I looking forward to taking up or restarting?

1) Knitting - I think I am going to take up knitting. FMIL Swan has given me my own little starter kit, and I am excited to take a beginners’ class at a local knitting shop. Perhaps knitting will let me get over my DIY insecurities? Any knitters out there care to give any tips to a beginner?

2) Being a docent - I don’t know how this is going to work out. I had been chosen to be a docent at a major art museum here in NYC. Then I got my job, which requires me to travel to another part of the state for half the year on a weekly basis. That’s not a good combination. Then I threw wedding planing in the mix. Needless to say, I missed the rest of docent training. I’m not sure if I’ll still be able to participate due to my prolonged absences, but I’d really love a shot at it again.

To partially retrain myself, I’m going to try to slip in a visit to an exhibit of pieces by Francis Bacon, a 20th century British painter who I know nothing about.

3) Seeing friends - not a hobby, but I am sorely out of touch with many of my friends due to travel and wedding planning. I’m so excited to see so many of them that I have not been able to see regularly.

4) Dance - “So You Think You Can Dance” as usual has made me want to get into a studio. I think I may need a dance accountability buddy to make sure that I get myself there.

Hmmm… what else? Trying out the recipes in the “Nigella Express” and “Joy of Cooking” cookbooks we received as wedding presents; maybe finally making time to brush up on a language (or two), and of course, figuring out what to blog about next. In my mind, the possibilities are endless!

Are there any things that you are looking forward to doing AFTER the wedding and the planning are done?

Knitting tips: KEEP GOING! Don’t get frustrated with your mistakes, and power through! Having someone to show you how to knit is also a huge help (instead of learning from a book or website)

Swan, this post instantly reminded me of the novel I just started reading, “The Friday Night Knitting Club”. (It’s set in NYC!) Oh, I could totally see you in that little shop! :o)

Knitting is so wonderful! Just keep with it. You’ll probably have so fun in the class you wont’ have a problem sticking with it, though!

My knitting has taken a downturn with wedding projects… my list of projects on ravelry.com has gotten ridiculously long :)

I love knitting!!! It is so awesome to make something you are proud of. Once you get past the stressfull learning period it is soooo relaxing!

Oh my gosh, what a cool post! Stuff I can’t wait to do after the wedding: I am planning on learning Spanish for REAL this time (maybe I will fork over the dough for Rosetta Stone?), trying to read 100 books in 2009 (I am at a measly 15 right now), and coming up with a cool way to use some of our wedding decor as home decor!

Like every other couple, we have daydreamed of coming up with a perfect business idea so that we could quit our jobs (or at the very least, one of us could quit) and work for ourselves! Of course…we finally hit on it last month- but we still have this dang wedding to plan! So, while starting a business isn’t exactly a ‘hobby’, it’s something that I’ve wanted to do, really want to get working on…but have all these wedding things getting in the way! Only 8 more weeks….

I have to focus on school for a few months after our wedding, but once that’s over, I want to learn Italian (I want to try Rosetta Stone, too, Miss Mouse!), get back in to dancing, and give my yard some much-needed attention.

@Miss Mouse: Rosetta Stone is totally worth it! It’s really easy to use and definitely much more efficient than trying to learn from a book or class.

I love to knit.
I started with a scarf - the generic project… which makes me want to pass on this: Start with washcloths.
They don’t sound like much fun, but for learning stitches and getting used to the motions, there’s nothing better.
Cotton yarn is cheap, no matter how you feel the project turns out, it will be useful, and you are able to finish something and feel accomplished much more quickly than you would if you were to start like I did - on a scarf that took me MONTHS!

(I was a very BAD beginning knitter. lol.)

That’s my ‘wish I could go back to the beginning’ knitting piece of advice.

Oh, and join ravelry.com. Best source of information and knitting friends out there.

Hah, I was JUST thinking about what I’m going to do with all my free time once the wedding quits consuming my life. I should write my own list!

Oh, I know the feeling. I’m now trying to get back to “myself” too! Dance, baby, dance! I also love that you knit! I’m teaching myself to sew. Go on with your self-actualization! Love it.

I’m so glad to know it’s not just me! Every time I watch a ‘dance’ show or movie, I want to go directly to the dance studio and start taking classes again!

Ha, I totally need a dance accountability partner too… it’s so easy to slip out of going to classes when you’re busy and so hard to slip back INto the habit! After September I’m looking forward to dancing more, cooking more, reading the zillion books that are waiting for me, and actually cleaning the house regularly for a change!

Sister Bruschetta and I are going to get way more into cooking…and one of my Bruschetta ‘maids — who’s seen the movies, but never read the books — has decided to do a read-through of the entire Harry Potter series with me!

Love this, Swan!! Looking ahead and planning is always a good idea. I love that you’re picking up knitting. I’ve always wanted to do that! I need to take a class though, as I’ve never caught on by reading instructions :(

I love that you made a list of things you want to do! I have one a mile long as well…but a ton of them probably will go by the wayside until grad school is completed…sigh…
