I’m Here to Save the Day!

August 6th, 2009 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. D'orsay

No, really… think Jean Gray…

… or Mary Jane… Spiderman’s girlfriend.

Because that’s how I look at the moment, and these photos I took in the bathroom to show you… just aren’t cutting it. When I go outside, my head is on fire… it’s literally flaming red.

1

How did this happen, you might ask? Well, I did it to myself. I’ve been coloring my hair at home using Garnier Nutrisse #67 Light Auburn for almost three years now. Once I tried to go darker (see my WB profile pic) but I wasn’t too wild about it. So I went back to light auburn… and then let my hair grown out so I had a half and half thing going. I was briefly contemplating having my natural hair color for the wedding. As you can see from the photo below, I had to make a choice. Would I stick with the top color or the bottom?

2

True to form, I went with the red I’d become so accustomed to seeing on my head, and at 3 years running it’s been the longest my hair has been in one color family! Except, I DIDN’T STICK WITH WHAT I HAD EXPERIENCE WITH. Mistake. Instead of going for my usual fix, I tried a semi permanent color, just in case I wanted to experiment with my natural color after the wedding—I hadn’t seen that much natural growth on my head in years! I just didn’t want to waste it. Well, now I look like a superhero.

It really is worse is person… I’m not exaggerating. People might start calling the fire department when I’m out in the sun. Since it’s a semi permanent, I’m giving myself lots of hair washings and perhaps not protecting my hair as I normally might in the sun. I plan on re-evaluating the situation in a week. ‘Til then,  Ms. D’orsay is here to save the day!

Did you suffer from any beauty mishaps before your wedding?

I had the exact same thing happen to my hair a few years ago! I tried a different red hair dye, left it on for two long, and my roots were CLOWN RED - fluorescent! I had to wear a knit cap at work to hide it the next day (the ends were acceptable, it was really just about three inches from my scalp that was awful!).

I am SO scared about something similar happening prior to my wedding! I have a year plus, but I’m going to find a color and stick with it so I won’t have any bad color incidents :(

I used to have my hair dyed “Superhero Red” for about two years before I went back to my natural almost black hair color. It’s funny, bc in our small town, and working in a public position, that’s what mt hair was known as…”that girl with the Superhero red hair…” It sticks to the hair….

Uh oh! It’s so hard dyeing your hair before the wedding b/c if you do it too close to the big day, you don’t have time to fix it if you eff it up. If you do it too far away, then you’ll have to deal with roots. You can always dye again if it doesn’t fade enough, right?

I’ve done the same thing! Red dye is so unpredictable. Good thing red dye doesn’t like to stick around very long. I just wash my hair until it fades to an acceptable level.

The good news is that red fades very quickly, so keep washing!!!

Red does fade quickly so that’s good, and my hair is the same way…pulls SO much red for some reason.

My hairstylist messed up 2 weeks before my wedding– she left the color on my roots too long and my hair was two-toned (it’s also red). But–when I went home to the town I was getting married in, my hair stylist there was able to apply a toner to even out the color– the day before the wedding!– and it was perfect. She completely saved the day.

Oh no, you don’t need a hair color crisis to deal with with the wedding so close! Although, red does seem to fade faster than any other color. I do think the more you wash it, the more the color should fade.

Keep us posted. I suppose worst-case-scenario, you could always dye it again in something darker?

try swimming in a chlorine pool everyday. that will definitely help get the dye out!

wash it with dishwashing liquid! its harsher than shampoo and *should* get the semi-permanent dye off more effectively! if that doesn’t work…find a sally’s or beauty supply store…they have color remover that should do the trick!

I’ve done this…sigh. Wash your hair really often, and get some really harsh shampoo–not the nice-to-your-hair stuff you usually want to use. It will come out…eventually.

And if all else fails, I would consider getting a brown semi-permanent and dying right over it. I use Loreal ColorSpa Moisture Actif (semi-perm) and it’s definitely the best. Garnier semi-perm is way overly-colorful and not natural looking, in my experience. You can’t get the Loreal in many stores anymore, but they sell it on Amazon and it’s so worth it. If you dye a brown over it, the red color will still be there but much more muted.

Good luck!!

use dish soap to wash your hair a couple of times. it strips the color right out!

Oh no! I’m sorry you were not satisfied with your color. I have really dark hair and I’ve been trying to get my hair “red” for years.

I’m sure someone else will tell you this, but wash your hair with Sunlight dish soap… repeatedly. It will start to come out basically asap, and will keep coming out faster than if you just shampoo.

My hair is naturally really dark brown and when I was 16 I decided that I wanted to go blonde for the summer. My mom decided to try to dye it for me with a box hair color. Oh. My. Gosh. She missed a whole bunch of spots and I looked like a skunk attacked my head. I would not leave the house looking like I did so I sent her straight to the store to go get something to fix it. She came back with this really nice auburn color. Well do you know what happens when you mix blonde and auburn?! My hair turned out fire truck red. Literally it was just in your face RED-RED-RED! We didn’t have time to fix it before I flew to California the next day for the summer to visit family so I just looked like a weirdo for the summer. I redyed it just before school started-whew!

Wash you hair A LOT like others suggested. If it’s semi-permanent it will come out. The more you wash it the better it will be. Dish soap and laundry soap will help but they really strip your hair of all its natural oils so if you go that route, get a really heavy duty conditioner to follow up with it afterwards.

Good luck!

I feel ya. I have been dying my hair red for years and experimentation sometimes leads to bad results! I once tried a new formula that was supposed to be “auburn” and I ended up as “eggplant”. Not an attractive look.

Agree that dishwashing soap is the way to go - or, if you’re reluctant, see if you can find Prell shampoo. The stuff is super-stripping. Sally Beauty Supply also sells some hair corrector, I believe.

Oh no! I left the salon once with raggedy-ann red hair, I’m not joking. The stylist tried to convince me it was fine, and when I went home I realized just how awful it was. I went back the next day to get it fixed - for free of course - and then refused to ever let them schedule me with that woman again!

I’m sure yours will be fine…fortunately vibrant colors often fade fast!

I’ve been there…. oh have a been there!

Wash your hair frequently with a salt shampoo - LUSH makes a great one called BIG. It “helps” to lift color as if exfoliates the hair cuticles.

Prell definitely works to pull the color out and it’s inexpensive.

I had one of those “I see myself in Feria” mishaps. Give it a week. Reds fade faster than any other color and almost never look right at first. Hang in there!

I ALWAYS use Garnier Nutrisse #67 Light Auburn - I love it!
And I’ve thought about trying others…. and now I’m definitely not going to!
Hopefully you can fix it fast!

I am so sorry you’re not happy with your hair! It should fade quickly and if all else fails you could always get a hair stylist to fix it before your wedding day. I’ve only colored my hair once and it was a disaster so I’m very afraid to try it again. I was fifteen and growing out a pixie cut and was very bored with my hair. My stylist suggested that we put some highlights in to change things up a bit and I agreed. I have naturally very dark reddish brown hair that has always dramatically highlighted itself bright red in the sun so I thought a few red highlights would seem pretty normal on my head. I was very wrong. They were orange, bright orange. Luckily I only had about three inches of hair at the time and when it grew out a little we chopped it back into the pixie cut. It took forever to grow that cut out!

Oh no! I have really no experience with coloring my hair because the one and only time I did it, it starting turning orange the next day! I looked like a tiger!

hehe I was waiting to see a picture after I read about it on your twitter lol

I’m so sorry it’s not what you wanted! but like many girls said is great that you still have time to fix it, I thought about the blue hair bride on “bride wars” when I read this hehe

The first time I dye my hair I wanted a light brown color- just a lil bit more light than what I have and the girl ended up making my hair “BRIGHT ORANGE!” I remember. I cried. and after 2 days I dye it black on my house because I was not going to Class on that hair lol

I too used to be a bottled redhead. I loved the red, but it was soooooo hard to get the color right! When I would get it dyed, my hair would be the reddest red (just like you describe) you have ever seen. But after three days or so, it would fade to a very pretty red. Unfortunately, it won’t stop fading and by a month or two, you could no longer tell I was a redhead, which considering the three/four-hour dye sessions was quite frustrating! Anyways…don’t worry about how bright it is right now! It will most likely fade and if not, you can try again! Good luck!

I did that once too…I was going for a darker brown with a reddish tint and had a lot of outgrowth…so it definitely didn’t work out so good…needless to say I redyed it the next day (poor hair!).
I’m hoping to stick with something familiar and the same when it comes time for the wedding!

Oh no! I always get a little nervous before trying out a new box of dye! Thank goodness its semi-permanent! I’d still attempt another semi permanent color, perhaps the shade darker? I used to dye my hair all the time, and then I got sick of the upkeep…found a box that was as close to my natural hair color as I could remember, and then went for it…and when I would start noticing the roots, I would use semi-permanent color every once in a while. After some determination (and getting my hair chopped a little shorter…to my chin), I once again returned to the natural shade, and it is so nice! No more maintenance!
