Umm… Church Tongue?

August 6th, 2009 @ 5:16 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

There’s no turning back now… it looks like Mr. S and I are really going to do this thing, and it’s time to get down to brass tacks… the “I do” kiss. The big one. The one all of our loved ones are going to see.

The scene from the “Wedding Singer” between Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler has been in the back of my mind for months. Remember? Drew’s character Julia was engaged to that awful way-too-’80s guy, and Julia’s sister was getting her to practice the church kiss with Sandler’s character Robbie.

Not ringing a bell? Don’t worry, you can watch the scene and get up to speed - I’ll wait for you.

This scene always makes me worry that there’s more to the kiss than just a kiss, and that I should be concerned about appropriate “church tongue.” I’m not really a PDA type of girl, so having everyone look on as we seal the deal is a tad nerve wracking for me.

Fortunately, Mr. S and I practiced the church kiss last night and it seems we are in agreement as to what works. And, as far as wedding planning goes, this was by far one of the more enjoyable projects!

Did you practice your “I do” lip lock before the big day, or did you leave it up to chance?

We’re not so into the PDA either….we’re considering sealing our marriage with a fist bump. :)

Haha. Our pastor recommended going to the mall and practicing in front of a department store! A classy one though, he said! If you can kiss in front of people at the mall, you can kiss in front of everyone at your wedding.

Oh man! The guy who married us gave us recommendations on how to do the wedding kiss, which was funny. I can’t remember what he said though. But we just totally winged it. It wasn’t as awkward as I thought it was going to be. It was so short, too! Whew. I’m SUPER anti pda. I forgot there were all these people watching our first dance and I almost did the eskimo kiss, then remembered there were people…It just weirds me out. Cute when others do it! But we’re not into more than holding hands in public =]

I use the phrase “church tongue” all of the time - I think it’s so funny! And did you know that in ancient times, some customs demanded the bride and groom - ahem - get it on in a tent immediately after the ceremony. The party couldn’t start until the marriage was consummated. I would lose. my. mind. No thanks!

LOL I just asked FI last night how he thought our first kiss should be. His response: “I dunno. Like, normal?” Looks like we’ll be winging it. :-)

My husband kissed me before the minister instructed him to! He looked a little too anxious and the minister just laughed! It was a precious, humorous moment in an otherwise serious ceremony.

I think we’ll just let the emotions of the day guide us. Thanks for the refresher on that part of the movie!

I never even thought about it (or practicing it!). I guess we’ve had plenty of practice, though! I knew better than to have even “church tongue” in my conservative church. I’ll have to wait for the DVD to see what it actually looked like! I love it–Julia Gulia!

We practiced! I don’t think we followed the script, though - we winged it the day-of. I even stepped in for an early smooch after I read my vows. Yup.

I was going to say have fun practicing, but I’m glad you’ve got that down. Have fun not practicing!!

I definitely plan to practice! Although my fiance is wonderful and wouldn’t do anything intentionally to upset me, I wouldn’t be surprised if he thought it would be funny to make a scene!

This worries me I’m not into PDA but FI is. He’ll want to do more than I will.

We should have practiced. Our minister said you may now kiss the bride and we leaned in and kissed…then I pulled away but DH just kept coming at me! We kissed a few more times and I was like, honey ok we need to stop! Everyone thought it was hilarious that he pretty much just wanted to kiss me forever.

We are winging it. It was suggested ( I think by our FOCCUS couple) to us that the wedding kiss should LOOK like there’s tongue but not show it. I just.about.died. We’ll be sticking to the very PG version.
