What, I’m Not Martha Stewart?

I guess I am not Martha Stewart after all. If you’ve experienced DIY-fail, never fear; you are not alone. The internet is overflowing with DIY projects for brides-to-be, and sometimes I am just amazed at what people pull off. I’ve certainly had a few hiccups along the way with some of my DIY projects, and I can’t say there won’t be more! Here are a few trip-ups so far…

1. Muslin OOT bags with custom stamp. This took a stumble right away. I gave our invitation motif design to an unfortunate Etsy seller who, of course, had trouble whittling out all the tiny details to perfection. In the end, I had to order it from a mass production center. For our OOT baggies, I pictured muslin bags decorated with our adorable stamp. Lucky for me, I had a muslin bag sitting around to test the plan before buying in bulk (thanks Anthropologie)! The result was less than desirable.

aIMG_1502

The fix: find bags with a tighter weave so the design shows up better, and go easy and even on the ink. I considered switching to cotton bags, but that might lend itself to more bleeding, and I really think the bleeding here was from uneven inking.

2. Poms. Like many brides, I looked at the Martha Stewart instructions online for making poms and thought, ‘wow, that is so easy.’  I think I’ll make a hundred or two. I bought a bulk pack of tissue paper and started on my way. Folding went fine. Wiring the center, fine. Cutting the edges… err mangling the edges - not so great! I persevered with my mangled edges and wondered how they managed to cut a perfect semicircle edge off the ends in one piece. Then I started fluffing out the tissue. Riiiip. Apparently that requires a gentle hand! When I was finished fluffing, I felt like I only had half a pom. The 8 sheets were way to little to give the pom any life, which is why it’s sitting on a table top in this picture.

Pom red

At the time I was trying to make the pom look so good, but you can sorta see how there aren’t enough sheets to fluff an entire ball. Here is a close up of the ends.

Pom red close up

The fix: I’m now working with 10-12 sheets of tissue per pom, slowly, and I am rounding the edges individually. While the paper is still in accordion fold, I grab one of these folds and give it a snip to round the edges, then move onto the next accordion fold and snip. It’s slow going, but so far so good.

Poms white

The pom on the left has less accordion folds than the one on the right. I used two tons of paper to add a little depth.

3. Edge painting. I saw this post by Miss Gloss and thought it was such a cute detail to spruce up our invitations! Of course, following her instructions would be too easy. Instead of working with a paint brush and paint, I decided to go with a raised stamp pad thinking this would minimize the mess. The problem was the pad didn’t deposit enough ink when swiped over a group of invites, so I had to pass each one over the stamp pad. Who knows why I didn’t do one set, stop, observe, and decide if it was really a good idea for my suite. I painted all the maps and RSVP cards, then decided it didn’t look that great together after all. Also, I smudged it all over the place.

aIMG_1503

I tried to redo the RSVP edges in silver (because the RSVP and map stacked one on top of the other, so the red on red was way too much). Sadly, the silver rubbed off. The really sad part - I realized this after redoing all the RSVP cards.

aIMG_1401

The fix: Unfortunately I ended up ordering new maps, and leaving the RSVPs as they were. It didn’t look so bad having them be the only element with colored edges, but that didn’t change the fact that our guests will get silver fingers after touching them! Sorry guests!

Hopefully my other projects will go a little better. If not, at least others can learn from my mistakes.

Did you have any DIY slip ups? Or projects you really wanted to try, but just thought you needed the skills of a Leonardo da Vinci to pull it off?

Oh man, I have had some serious DIY fail. Trying to make soy votive candles on a mold designed for petroleum wax candles. Yikes! I was out on the back porch banging the mold against the concrete at midnight! I’m glad that you persevered and your projects ended up working out.

thanks for sharing your hiccups and successes. too much diy perfection is kind of intimidating, and i think people are too scared to share some of the bumps along the way.

your diy frustrations are very similar to mine! i was so crafty before I got engaged, and now…I seem to be a big fat DIY fail. What happened? Maybe our rings are sucking our crafty brain parts out.

OH yeah. I can relate. Miss D’Orsay inspired me with her wine bottle to vase project, and even though she warned of the patience it required, I foolishly convinced myself that I am capable of being patient. SO not the case. Every time I worked on them, I ended up in tears. I’m not even going to get started on my disasterous invitations.

Thanks for the tips on the poms, I’m starting those this weekend.

Sadly, there is only one MS, and we all can’t be her all the time. One of my biggest wedding worries is losing steam and not completing my DIY projects (totally happened to my best friend!).

This is a great post. Cause sometimes it feels as if you crafty people pick things up and BAM they are perfect on the first try. This made me feel like yes even if I mess up if I keep trying I will get it. Even though I want to be crafty at heart but I really am not.

How refreshing! I’ve had a share of DIY fails as well, including my own edge-painting on my menus. I messed up about half of what I did and the rest seemed fine — until it drizzled rain while we were setting up the tables! Ugh. Green ink everywhere.

This is an awesome post. Everybody, even the pros have had their fair share of slip ups…so it’s so good for all us diy-ers to allow ourselves some grace over ours. :)

Aw, I’m sorry to hear aboour your difficulties. I am glad I am not alone in the “problems” with the poms. I think the tip about rounding off the edges individually is great. I will have to try that!

I’m too chicken to even try anything! So bravo to all your attempts, they look much better than my nothing DIY!

There are two types of ink. Pigment ink is meant for embossing, so it’s designed to pretty much never dry, ever. This theoretically gives you time to put on the embossing powder and heat it. Dye inks dry much faster, but they bleed into the paper more.

Sounds like you used pigment ink. Actually, the ink pad in the picture told me that. :-) If you dipped your edges in embossing powder and heated them, they wouldn’t rub off anymore.

How do I know this? Haha. I did the same thing. I decided that instead of getting paint, I’d use a nice pink ink pad. It’s a lovely color, especially when it’s all over my hands! Grr.

Thank you for sharing the bumps along the way! I have such big DIY ideas for our wedding, but I may be fooling myself about what I’m actually capable of. I’m just going to try one project at a time, and see where it takes me. I’m sure there will be PLENTY of hiccups!

DIY fail happens to me all the time. But it looks like you are figuring out what is wrong and then perfecting it which is what counts. The poms looks great.

You know what - I made one Martha pomander with poms with rounded edges and one with straight edged poms - and honestly they look exactly the same!

I have a loooong list of projects and a pretty blase attitude… I really think I’m the only person who will really notice. Everyone else will be too stunned by the beauty and shear number of my projects to look for imperfections… right??

Everything will turn out great in the end!

oooohhhh you are a brave one! Glad you are persevering and sharing all the bumps in the road… I too have had DIY Issues… used what I thought was embossing powder on lovely stamped invites: it would not raise! Turns out the fairy dust in question was tiny glitter! I think we are still vacuuming it up!

I’m sure even Martha Stewart has had cases of DIY Fail. She can’t be perfect and creative ALL the time!

I think your white poms turned out great, and I’ll bet your invites look good too. I doubt anyone will rub the edges enough to get silver on their hands : )

There are plenty of projects I’m not sure I’ll be able to attempt because of my skill level. In fact, I mentioned something about not being able to find buttons I like and our crafty, DIY queen, Miss Poodle, recommended moulding plastic and making them myself! I was all, “Uhhh, I’m DEFINITELY not good enough to do that!”

Anyway, everyone’s gotta have a DIY flop every once in a while!

This is exactly my fear about taking on DIY projects at all. I’ve never sewn, I’ve never made a single paper craft, I’ve never scrapbook-ed, and my handwriting is ATROCIOUS! Simply atrocious.

Needless to say, I’m looking into other options as well. I am going to try out a floral pomander, but my guess is that I’m going to be scouring Etsy to purchase them shortly after what is sure to be a debacle of the failingest kind.

Lol.
I’m sorry to laugh, but it’s just that even though our projects are different, our results seem to be very similar.
ALMOST what we had in mind.
It’s fun - makes me want to do this kind of thing for a living, but maybe… for someone else.
This feels too personal. :)

Thank you for this post. I always think how do they do it? How are they so good? I know if I try these they aren’t going to look as great. Now I know that I won’t be the only not getting it right the first time.

I loved this post. I have tons of DIY fail, though I usually cover it up well — I think I’m way better at covering up than crafting! LOL. As for the muslin bags, how about using gocco fabric ink on them? You could either actually gocco them or try dipping your stamp in gocco fabric ink?

@Mrs. Hot Cocoa: I hadn’t even thought of that! Great idea, maybe I’ll give it a try. I wish I had a gocco, but I didn’t anticipate using it that much. It sure would be handy now.

@ladybuglove: Not giving up at all! In fact I am adding to my DIY list. hehe.

@Grey56: I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought an ink stamp was genius :) Thanks for the tip!

Oh yeah, crafters hardly ever post about the fails! *lol*

My first attempt at a pom was disasterous! But eventually you get the hang of how many sheets & how big the paper should be… I still used plenty of scotch tape though (hey, it’s on the inside - no one can see it!).

Thank you for writing this post! I tried poms today and they were an absolute failure (the sheets didn’t meet in the middle, like yours). Thank you for the tips and for helping me feel a bit less inept :)

now, im really starting to get nervous about the MS Poms. I have 107 days to go and thought I could wait to 2 months out, but now it seems I am a little naive. How early do you recommend doing them?

@beaninca: That is a question for someone who has them finished! I am about 1.5 months out and have started them, but I’m just going to see how many i can make between now and then and don’t have a number to hit. I’d say try to make one now, so you can decide if they are worth the labor for you and if you like how they turn out and you can get an estimate on how much time you will spend on them.

I bought the Martha Stewart kits for poms (yay for 50% off coupons)…now I’m hoping that those will come out right! Eeek! I’m relieved that they at least have pre-cut rounded edges….
