Mr. P’s cousin, Margo, wrote the following message to her family about her trip to rural Virginia for our wedding. I thought it a neat overview of the weekend.
“All weddings are beautiful, but Mr. P and Perfume’s was definitely an elegant affair! What I would call a “destination wedding”. It started the night before; all the guests were invited to the rehearsal dinner at a beautiful music center tucked into the side of a mountain. We went back to our cute B & B which had been converted from an old mill. They had even converted the old silo into guest rooms.
The next day we spent some time with Mr. P’s parents, his brother and his brother’s wife and several other guests at a Victorian style bed and breakfast with a great big wrap around porch. Then Mom & I headed over to the Homestead resort to walk around a bit before the wedding.
I have been in the Blue Ridge Mountains before but never to Hot Springs or the Homestead—it was like stepping back in time—we just don’t have the same age and history in the West. We walked through all the elegant lounges and ballrooms and gardens. The actual ceremony was in the Spa garden, right next to one of the hot springs, lots of marble and sculptured plants. The ring bearer and flower girl were adorable. The wind must have blown the priest’s pages back because he started to give the wedding vows twice (so the Perfumes are doubly married.
The reception started out on the big lawn behind the Homestead, and later moved into the Crystal room for a seven course dinner and dancing.
At the entrance to the Crystal room we each had to pick our names from a poster to see which “destination” would be our table. Connie, Danny, Audra, Jared, Mom and I were at the “Stockholm” table (the escort card had a picture of the Perfumes from their visit to Stockholm). Other tables were “Paris” and “Beijing” and many other great locations where they have gone. Many of the guests were from Europe. I am not as good as mingling as Mom is so I only talked to a few people, mainly I enjoyed catching up with the cousins. Perfume’s mother was very friendly and came over to talk a few times.
Seemed like maybe 75 or 80 people total, but I’m not good at guessing. Perfume is a great dancer - Mr. P seemed just a bit reluctant! (At one point she was dancing circles around him… but he just stood there and grinned.) Instead of sitting at a large table with their wedding party, they had their own little table, just the two of them, I guess it’s called a Sweetheart Table - but it made it really easy to approach them.
After the reception Mom and I went back to the hot springs by the Spa Garden and soaked our feet. Heaven! The next morning the Perfumes had a “farewell breakfast” back at the music center before heading off on their honeymoon in Italy (Bellagio, Venice and other dreamy Italian places). Mom and I spent the rest of the day driving through the mountains and along the Blue Ridge Parkway, oohing and aahing at all the rhododendron and mountain laurel (fried green tomatoes for dinner, now that’s hard to find back in Wyoming)!
Love, Margo”
