Mrs. Sprinkle's Picture
Mrs. Sprinkle, Los Angeles Age and Occupation: 26, Preschool Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Television Production/Writer Engagement Date: December 24, 2008 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: The Marvimon House About Me: I'm a Bay Area native trying to create a life for myself (and my fiance, and our three cats!) in the vast city of Los Angeles. I love vegan red velvet cupcakes, pilates ,and mid-century furniture. Mr. Sprinkle and I met when my band toured through his city (we bonded over cake and a mutual love of Morrissey) and we are getting married on the four year anniversary of our first date. When I am not teaching preschool (or blogging!) you can find me perfecting recipes, petting kittens, hiking in Griffith Park, and overusing exclamation points. We are planning a vegan, green-as-possible, DIY wedding, and I couldn't be more excited to share all of the details!

Project: Cupcake Ornaments!

August 8th, 2009 @ 6:00 pm by Mrs. Sprinkle

Our first dessert related decision was to serve cupcakes instead of the traditional wedding cake. We have since added a few small cakes back into our plans (we will be having a homemade dessert buffet!), but we are keeping the cupcakes as the main attraction. I even made a cake topper to fit on two cupcakes!

Each dowel is meant to sit in a separate cupcake, with the string and banner hanging in between. The dowels are still a bit long, but I will shorten them to the correct length as soon as I let myself bake another test batch of cupcakes!

The sign currently reads “we did it!” The banner part isn’t permanent and can be changed or switched out in case I change my mind at the last minute. :)

Let me just say, before anyone points it out to me, that I do know Mr. S was made using the “dress” shape! It’s the only one I had, and I didn’t want to have to order more and wait around for them to be delivered. It’s OK, he is secure in his manliness (and in touch with his feminine side!), whether or not he is wearing a dress-shaped suit! I also made these before we decided Mr. Sprinkle would be wearing a brown suit, not gray, so I might repaint them… or not. With only five weeks to go until the wedding I really have to pick and choose what gets worked on and what gets left as-is.

You can purchase the little person figures here on Etsy, and customize them any way you like! They can also be found in many craft supply stores. You may have to drill a small hole in the bottom and insert your own dowel. Dowels can be picked up at Home Depot for less than a quarter. I have also seen animal and child shapes! I may pick up some cats to add to ours, since our family is not complete without our three furry friends.

All together this project took me less than an hour to do and cost about $5 to make.

My kind of DIY project! Are you making your own cake topper, or buying something that suits your style?

Very cute! I didn’t even know about the “dress” shape since I’d never looked into these, I just assumed they all came in the same shape. I love that they will be attached by the string/sign - such a good idea! Great job Sprinkles.

Adorable! That was always my concern with having cupcakes, I really wanted a cake topper! I would never have noticed the dress-shaped tux ;)

I love the dress shape - it’s not a dress shape anyway, it’s the shape of playmobiles! Awesome!

I LOVE! Great job! The little sign is so cute. I didn’t notice the Mr. is on a “womanly” shaped person. You could maybe paint little pants on the front especially if you are going to re-paint his. Either way, they are great.

Love ‘em! I’m trying to figure out what to use as my cupcake topper. I’m thinking I might just use our initials instead of figures.
