Mrs. Lightning's Picture
Mrs. Lightning, Cape Town Age and Occupation: 22, Journalist and Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Computer Scientist Engagement Date: December 27, 2008 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: Hout Bay Manor About Me: I'm a young American living abroad in the beautiful city of Cape Town with a wonderful South African fiance and our crazy kitty Zeus. We're young, driven and madly in love. Together we're pursuing our wildest dreams including our biggest undertaking yet, a vintage retrospective wedding filled to the brim with DIY madness. I have an unnatural attraction to cake, a passion for blogging and a love of good design. While I might be an overly obsessive creative with too many ideas and nowhere to put them, Mr Lightning is my biggest fan and I can't wait to make my true love mine.
About Mrs. Lightning

I am an avid follower of the blog Vintage Glam Weddings. It’s been a great inspiration thus far, and has recently calmed my wedding related concerns. With my vintage style invitations already in progress, I have decided to incorporate a little more of the 1930s in my overall theme. I love the style of the 1950s but with a black tie affair to consider, I believe the 1930s and 1940s vintage glam will be more suitable. I’m thinking an evening inspired by star such as Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn. The retrospective will culminate in my beloved 1950s and 1960s music.

My favourite part of incorporating a little of the “dirty thirties”?

I can wear my favourite dark red nail polish from Chanel (previously considered a little too gothic by my mother and friends for a wedding, but perfect for a touch of burlesque). Check out this slightly more dark, but incredibly beautiful 1930s inspired wedding captured by Tinywater Photography.

Is your wedding heavily influenced by a time period? Which, and what elements will you incorporate?

How fabulous…I love the first one too. I love music from the 50s and 60s too…it just seems so much more fun and less annoying than some of the music today. I have been listening to the 50s and 60s station on my sirius to get inspired. The 70s music is pretty cool too! I told my fiance that for my 30th birthday I want a 50s theme birthday party with poodle skirts and leather jackets! I love watching Grease! I cant wait to see your wedding details.

I adore the thirties, but we couldn’t do much with it as a theme since I already had my dress before I even thought of it, and my pretty, country-ish venue did NOT lend itself to that! I settled on having photos of classic actors from the 30s and 40s as table names, and that was really it! Oh and we did do our engagement shoot as a classic hollywood theme - http://rubyslippersbride.blogspot.com/2008/10/classic-engagement-teaser.html

Also, help me out - it’s bugging the heck out of me that I can’t identify the actress in the first pic you posted. Is it Joan Bennett?

Those are great photos. I didn’t really have a time period in mind, but I had a bit of a 50s feel with a poufy short dress and some of the fonts I used on our menus and programs. Really, though, I didn’t carry it through. I’m eager to see your details and plans!

I love the classic “hollywood” era between the 40’s and 50’s. Thanks for that link to a new site I can puruse for vintage glam eye candy!

Wedding look here will be old south meets old hollywood for a small yet elegant intimate affair!

We definitely did an old Hollywood look for our outfits/hair/makeup. It was quite a contrast with our venue, and somehow it all worked together with the majesty of the granite and the glamor of the look.

Love the vintage blog! We are doing the vinatage 1940s WWII avaition theme. We are getting married in an old WWII airplane hangar with old planes and cars all over the property. In fact this next weekend we are taking some pictures for our save the date cards in 1940s attire with planes! Can’t wait to see how they turn out. Will enjoy seeing your progress of your wedding!

I really shot for the 40’s (mainly just in my appearance & a few touches here & there), & think we pulled it off quite nicely IMHO. :)

I’m going for a 50’s Cuban Garden theme….but I love all the other era’s too. There are so many different ideas that can be inspired by a certain era. I went for 50’s Havana because I’m cuban and I love the feeling of Old Havana.
