Mrs. Lightning's Picture
Mrs. Lightning, Cape Town Age and Occupation: 22, Journalist and Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Computer Scientist Engagement Date: December 27, 2008 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: Hout Bay Manor About Me: I'm a young American living abroad in the beautiful city of Cape Town with a wonderful South African fiance and our crazy kitty Zeus. We're young, driven and madly in love. Together we're pursuing our wildest dreams including our biggest undertaking yet, a vintage retrospective wedding filled to the brim with DIY madness. I have an unnatural attraction to cake, a passion for blogging and a love of good design. While I might be an overly obsessive creative with too many ideas and nowhere to put them, Mr Lightning is my biggest fan and I can't wait to make my true love mine.
About Mrs. Lightning

I started working on making my dress special and more appropriate for my black tie affair, but it isn’t going very well. In fact, it is a mess. I don’t know whether it serves me right for buying something cheap and expecting it to hold up next to my beloved’s tuxedo on the night.

I have tried it on a gazillion times, pinning it here and there and nothing works. And the more I fiddle, the more it unravels and I freak out and put it back in the cupboard. It seems my bargain purchase is coming back to haunt me.

The dress is lovely as it is for a less formal occasion, but not suitable for the wedding unless I fix it up. But this fixing up process is making me more anxious than anything else and has prompted my mother to step in. And to be honest, I am ever so grateful. She says I need to decide what I want and then we will find someone (within my strict budget she swears - even though I have plenty to draw from if I wanted) to help me create it.

The problem is I want a Jenny Packham more than I have ever wanted anything for this wedding. More than the food, the favours and yes, even the stationery which I slaved over for so long. Problem is, they’re super expensive, even for my parents’ standards, and well, I’d have to travel to the US like Sexyredframe to get one.

And if you haven’t seen the lovely Sexyredframe in my personal favourite Packham gown before, take a looksie at her in all her glory. :)

Ah to be tall, bronzed and Jenny Packham’d…

And so with a few inspiring dress pictures in hand, I start my search for the “one”. I know I said I didn’t need the “one” before, but I think every bride has her fair share of dress indecision… But ultimately if worse comes to worst, I have a lovely groom, a beautiful venue, some fabulous friends and a simple white dress if I need it.

Have you though of finding the dresses evil twin? I know I’d be willing to search high and low for dresses. It’s one of my favorite things to do for the women on here who fall in love with a dress they can’t afford.

Can you find a seamstress in South Africa to make a copy? I agree with Miss Mouse and doctorgirl. You should do what you can to get the dress you’ll feel the best in. It doesn’t sound like the dress you have is cutting it anymore. Maybe you can wear it to the rehersal though! Best of luck!

You are not alone! I have been searching for my perfect dress for almost 4 months now! I almost bought one, but it just didn’t feel right! I feel like “my dress” is still out there!

I know you will find “your” dress Miss L! I know what you mean with the simple-dress-formal-wedding issue. I looked best in a simple dress and I would feel silly and under dressed at my own wedding! Every brides’ perfect dress is out there… but, just like our FI, we have to try a few bad ones before we find THE BEST! Good luck!

I don’t know if it would help, or if the price reduction is really enough especially taking shipping into account, but there is a papillion for sale on preowned wedding dresses right now -

Can’t hurt to look around and see if you can find it for cheaper :-)

I heart sexyredframe so much. I stumbled on her one night and stayed up way too late reading it one night. Any chance she’d trade you a dress? =) Good luck. I hope you find it

Oh, I totally get your Jenny Packham obsession — I was the same. If it helps, her dresses I think photograph better than they look in real life! In any case, I am sure you can fix your dress out: check this post from apracticalwedding for inspiration…

Can you believe she made it herself, complete with the gorgeous belt?

I also went through dress doubt but now I’m three weeks before my wedding & really love my dress again. Trust your first instincts & have faith in your imagination!

I went through the exact same thing. I had a dress for over a year that I was given for free, and always liked it just fine, but finally realized that I wanted to feel great in my dress, so ordered a new one. I really underestimated the importance of the right dress. I still don’t think it is worth what some dresses cost, but it is worth something.

There are lots of vendors online that will make a dress for you, and they can do a custom dress if you provide photos and a description of what you’re looking for. I would encourage you to look into those. Check out http://www.lilywedding.com/

Good luck!

I had the exact same Jenny Packham envy. Damn sexyredframe and her gorgeousness. I think you should keep looking, though. If you’re not 100% happy with your dress, you should. But start now! Or find a seamstress to copy the Packham, or something!

Your sense of vintage style is awesome - I can see your need for finding that perfectly vintage-y special one of a kind dress. I also love Jenny Packham. Good for you for sticking to the search!

I hear ya, Miss Lightning! I didn’t think the dress was all that important. I gave myself a busget of $600 -$700 when we first got engaged. Then, when we started planning I upped the budget to $1000. I too am struggling with finding the “perfect” dress. Good luck with your search!
