About Mrs. Stiletto

Sunrise… Sunset… At the Gym!

August 10th, 2009 @ 3:22 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

The countdown to the wedding is hanging precariously over my head, ticking away as the 30-day mark looms closer and closer… which will, of course, only speed toward the 15, 10, and 5 day markers! And before you know it, we’ll be at the night-before-the-wedding-point. Eeh.

I think Mr. S is starting to feel it too, however he’s not feeling the need to get a jump start on DIY projects or plan out the timeline. He’s instituted “two a days” in the Stiletto household.

The Stilettos aren’t strangers to a whole lot of exercise - in fact, our workout regime has changed little due to the engagement because we were already going to the gym 4, 5 or 6 days a week. But with the thought of the wedding and the beach honeymoon on the horizon, Mr. S thought we needed to kick it up a notch during this last month. When he mentioned 5AM workouts to me, I told him, “absolutely not. No way. Never going to happen.” I have too much on my plate right now (I mean, come on - I’m planning a wedding here!).

Eventually, I softened to the idea and have found myself getting up at 4:30 AM to take the dog out, get changed, and dash off to the gym with Mr. S for 45 minutes of good cardio. Some evenings include returning to the gym for more cardio (and, I know, I need to get back to the weights, as much as I’ve been ignoring them!), or staying at home for pilates.

Between you and me, I love it! I have more energy during the day, I feel great, and I love being at the gym when they’ve just unlocked the doors. And, since getting workouts in at this stage is crucial, if I have something after work that conflicts with my normal workout, I know that I got at least one workout in for the day (rather than having to give up my workout completely for that day) and I can always supplement at home with lifting some light weights or doing a quick pilates DVD.

Will 5AM workouts be with me after the wedding? I wouldn’t bet on it. But as we power through these final weeks, I’m motivated by how great I want to look and feel on my wedding day!

How early is too early for you to work out in the morning?

I’m hitting the gym after work, since I was up too late working on the to-do list to hit the gym in the morning. But, I actually HAD entertained the idea of “two-a-day”-ing it with the wedding so close!

I have always had ambitions to be a “morning worker-outter,” I can’t do it though! Kudos to you, lady! Somehow, I can much more easily work out at 11p at night than at 5a. I wish I could make myself do it though! It’s a nice way to start off your day…

@JJ: We go to bed between 9 and 10:00, but that’s not too much earlier than my normal schedule. I honestly thought this morning would be SO hard because Mondays usually are, but it wasn’t hard to get up at all!

@Miss Snapdragon: I’m not a morning person, but I like to get to work early and leave by 4 rather than get in late and leave late…so if I want a morning workout, 5am it is!

I have to wake up at 5am in order to get out the door for my hour long commute so I can get to work on time. No way could I work out too. I need to workout period!! HA! You are inspiration Miss S.! You should take 30 day and T-1 day to wedding photos in sport shorts and a sports bra or something. I bet there will be a big difference even though you are already in shape!

You are a brave girl! I get up at 5 am to get to work by 6:45. An am work out is not happening. I try to work out on my days off.

@Curlysue: Ha! I had thought about doing that because I’m so paranoid about wearing a bikini on my honeymoon, but I chickened out with the picture before/after thing, we’ll see…even though i work out a lot, still a lot of jiggle in the middle ;)

Oh and I hear you on the commute! Mine is a good 45 minutes, ugh.

Wow, I’m impressed! I work out in the evenings and have been trying forever to motivate myself to switch to mornings. I just can’t get up and out that early!

I hit the gym between 4:30 and 5 am more mornings than not, which means going to bed past 9 is pushing it, at least for me. It’s not my ideal, but I could find plenty of excuses why not to go after work. Plus, I like having that sense of accomplishment at 6 am. Oh, and I am SOOOO not a morning person!

Miss Stiletto - great ideas! I was just thinking how I need to do more to get into better shape and I think you inspired me to do sunrise and sunset at the gym! I usally will do a 6am spin or box class, but then nothing after work. Where do you work out? I belong to LPAC and love their classes.

@AbbyM: Awesome! And you’re better than me - I’m a wuss and never go to classes :) I’m up on the NW side of the city so we go to Galter Life Center (attached to Swedish Covenant Hospital) - great facility and about the only gym near us. Good luck with your two-a-days :)

That’s incredible! My FI and I have been setting the alarm for 5:45 am for morning work outs and we more often than not hit snooze until it is too late to go. How do you manage to actually get out of bed when that alarm goes off that early!?

@Bridebella: I have a fiance who has the best will power in the world! It’s because of him we never miss going to the gym unless there’s a natural disaster (don’t think I’m joking!), which is a blessing in disguise…sometimes feels like a curse when I’m really unmotivated!

Very impressive. Any morning is too early for me to workout - I’m not a morning person. Right after work though I have no problem. Good luck!

OOo i used to do 2 a days for army stuff. 6-7am cardio, class all day, another few mile run at 6 or 7pm for an hour. I certainly couldn’t do it now without going nutty. I was doing essentially two a days in the evening–heavy cardio AND heavy weightlifting. I do take 6am classes occassionally. But now I do just one or the other–short cardio with weights or long cardio or long weights now. But i prefer to work out in the evening as i’m at my desk at 630am sometimes. If I went in later, SURE! I’m a morning girl. You are super motivated! And it’s short term which is good.
