Mrs. Lightning's Picture
Mrs. Lightning, Cape Town Age and Occupation: 22, Journalist and Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Computer Scientist Engagement Date: December 27, 2008 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: Hout Bay Manor About Me: I'm a young American living abroad in the beautiful city of Cape Town with a wonderful South African fiance and our crazy kitty Zeus. We're young, driven and madly in love. Together we're pursuing our wildest dreams including our biggest undertaking yet, a vintage retrospective wedding filled to the brim with DIY madness. I have an unnatural attraction to cake, a passion for blogging and a love of good design. While I might be an overly obsessive creative with too many ideas and nowhere to put them, Mr Lightning is my biggest fan and I can't wait to make my true love mine.
About Mrs. Lightning

While the time has come to start organising the pre-wedding events, my bridesmaids haven’t made any progress with my bridal shower. because we are all in our early twenties none of them are particularly familiar with the tradition of showering the bride. As such, they’ve been more focused on plans for the hen night. However, unlike the hen night, a lot more women will be in attendance and will need some considerable warning. This event has been somewhat forgotten, so I may need to pass this task on to another person.

Because my guest list is quite short, and most of my mother’s close friends will be out of town during August, there really hasn’t been anyone else to take on the shower. My only solution is to pass it on to my mother and future mother-in-law. Traditionally it is not acceptable for my mom (or me for that matter) to be involved in this event, but the person who knows me best is my mom. This event is deeply important to me and I don’t want it to be passed over because I’m a young bride.

And so this brings me to a theme (yes, another theme)!! I know it’s been done before, but it doesn’t change the fact I still love it. What I’m talking about is a shower inspired by Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. I’d always wanted to do this for one of my birthdays, but it’s a tricky theme to do with a coed guest list. However, for a women-only party, it’s perfect. I loved the film so much that I made it my mission to hunt down Laduree’s famous macarons when i visited Paris last year (sadly, there no trip to Versailles due to flight delays).

The theme possibilities are endless and I think all I’ll need to inspire my mom and future mom-in-law are a few pictures (I’ll take care of the invitations). Perhaps I’ll pass these on to get them started…

P.S. - If you’re interested in this theme too, check out this Marie Antoinette post on Primadonna Bride (it uses the very same birdcages I originally bought for the wedding).

What was the theme of your shower? Did you get to have a say in it?

Mine was tea at the Ritz, close-ish to your theme. The colors et al. are the same :)

Will you be using the birdcages for the shower, then?

I have been hearing so much buzz about this movie recently! Aren’t those macarons to die for?! Mmmm, orange bergamot. That pic is making me drool–I have a Laduree box sitting on my coffee table. Sadly, it it empty. I’m sorry your BMs are letting you down (I was a MOH at age 20, & I didn’t know to throw a shower. I made up for it with a fab baby shower later.) The advantage of being an older bride is that I had 2 showers-1 thrown by my sisters/MOHs & another by my BFF/BM & her mother. I had too big of a guest list for just one. They were both so different & so great. I wish you luck with yours!

Toooo cute! I love all that super girly, old world, stuff! And I seriously need to try macaroons already. I’ve heard so much about them!

Love the theme! So original. A great twist, to a boring tea party. Will you wear a fancy dress? At least the feather! You could totally pull it off.

I love that movie! And Marie Antoinette in general. I saw a “Marie Antoniette inspired” editorial in Lucky magazine right after I got engaged. I immediately went and bought the necklace they featured, plus matching earrings, for the rehearsal (dinner). Now I just have to find the dress to go with it!

I love the Marie Antoinette idea. Those Laduree macarons are amazing… I’m in my early twenties too, and none of my close friends live in the area… so I might have to forgo a bridal shower.

Cute theme! I told my MOH that I didn’t want a traditional shower early on. I HATE being in the spotlight. . . especially when it comes to opening gifts. I just feel incredibly awkward.

Which is why I asked my MOH if she would mind throwing us a Jack & Jill shower. I also suggested it be more of an evening, summer bbq type party so people would get that it’s laid back. She did kinda remind me that she’s planning it not me… but I’m hoping since I’m a graphic designer she’ll at least let me design the invites! :)

I loved the look of that movie, too. This is a wild suggestion, but if you want to go all out on the Marie Antoinette movie theme, get in touch with me. I could possibly send you some of the Chinese tea that’s featured in the film (the tea leaves that open into flowers). Could be fun!

I love your theme! Your posts are always so refreshing and new, I enjoy reading everything you come up with. And stop calling yourself a young bride! You are only a year younger than me and remember how young most of our mothers were when they were married! You are more than emotionally mature, and you’ve obviously have a great head on your shoulders to be able to plan such a fantastic wedding.
Keep it up!

My shower was a complete surprise, but everything involved a nautical theme. My maids were only slightly involved. My Aunt actually took over when she thought of a great theme, and that was that. They did a great job, and I have some wonderful photos and memories, and that means everything to me.

no theme. themes don’t seem to be popular here in the midwest. I guess the theme would be “bridal shower”

very sweet! my shower themes were italy/tuscany, garden party brunch, and one didn’t really have a theme, but it had yellow daisies and blue linens and was very sweet!

Don’t worry about it not being appropriate for you mom to throw you a shower. My MOH sent out the invitations, but my stepmom planned and hosted my main shower. Likewise, my mom is throwing me another small, family shower later this month. As long as you aren’t planning/hosting it, it’ll be fine. :)

Such a fun girly theme, and about the planning, some things just have to get done. My mom is planning mine with her friend.
