Remember my soap opera-esque cliffhanger from yesterday?
It’s true. Mr. DD and I got engaged twice.
The first time was the private proposal Mr. DD and I both wanted.
The second time was at the formal Indian engagement ceremony (called a mangni) that my parents wanted.
Scheduling the second event meant that I knew when both engagements were going to happen. The ring arrived one weekend and the mangni was two weekends after that. That just left the middle weekend open for a proposal (and I was busy Saturday—so it had to be on Friday).
Although it was important to me to make a mutual decision to get married, I was quite happy leaving the details of the proposal to Mr. DD. And, although I didn’t give him much time to work with, he was determined to surprise me a little bit.
I tried to get him to give me clues under the guise of wanting to know what to wear. But he wouldn’t budge. All he said was to dress nicely but warmly. It was December, though, so that really wasn’t much of a clue at all.
“Where are we going?” I asked. We were not quite out of the driveway at this point.
And can you imagine? He still wouldn’t tell me!
So I waited for a really long time. This is otherwise known as the two minutes until we hit the freeway. “Aha,” I said. “We’re going south. But where south?”
He didn’t answer. But, then again, I guess I didn’t really want to know.
So instead of getting Mr. DD to break down and tell me where we were going, I watched the freeway exits pass. We got off the freeway in the town of Los Gatos. It has a cute little downtown area and a few nice restaurants. It’s also home to Icing on the Cake Bakery (which has amazing cupcakes) and the salon we go to.
Since the bakery closes pretty early and Mr. DD didn’t really need a haircut, I figured we were there for dinner.
He stopped the car at the Hotel Los Gatos, where he had made a reservation at the attached restaurant, Dio Deka.

It was a restaurant I had been wanting to try, and I think we were both relieved that the food was really good.
After dinner, Mr. DDsuggested we go on a little walk. So we walked over to the Town Plaza which was a few blocks away.
Most of the way there, I saw what he had planned—there was a horse-drawn carriage waiting for us! Plus, he had gotten a friend to stash some glasses and champagne.
I should mention here that I was terrified that I was going to break out into nervous laughter when Mr. DD asked me to marry him. Luckily, that didn’t happen. He asked, I said yes, and, as the carriage drove through Los Gatos, it seemed that everyone we passed was smiling at us…

J and I the night we got engaged. Clearly this was long after all my makeup wore off!
One engagement down, one to go.
Did you know when your boyfriend was going to propose? And, if so, did he still manage to keep some of the details a surprise?
