About Mrs. D'orsay

Running of the Bride

August 12th, 2009 @ 11:04 am by Mrs. D'orsay

I’m finding with the wedding drawing closer and closer each day, my fitness goals seem harder to reach. I had been constantly trying to figure out how to add more cardio to my workouts to supplement my personal training sessions. Go to a class you might say? I don’t belong to a gym, and sadly, I’ve worked my JM Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism DVD into the ground.

(Can I look like her?!?!)

So I did what thousands of people before have done.

I laced up my shoes and hit the ground running. There are a few things you should understand about me though. When I say running… I mean jogging. Never in a million years did I think I could or would be one of “those people”; runners are an intense set of folks. Some of them run over 26 miles… ALL AT ONE TIME!!! I’d tell myself, “I’ve had a knee surgery, countless ankle injuries and that I just can’t see the joy in endlessly running.” All were excuses to avoid giving it a go, because I simply thought I couldn’t do it.

During one of my earlier training sessions with my trainer he had us get on the treadmill. “Oh no,” I protested, “I can’t do that… I’m not a runner.”  After we ran a mile I thought, ‘Hey! I can do this! Maybe I could be one of them!”

Since that day I’ve been finding more and more reasons to jump on the treadmill after a training session or to just get running, in general. I’m even considering a 5k in October!

What has really helped me the most? Indie Runner Soup. It’s a podcast on iTunes and I can’t get enough of it. I found it over a year ago and always wanted a reason to listen to it, but since I wasn’t a runner, I settled for listening to it in my car or on the elliptical (which just isn’t the same). In fact, I’m willing to say that a fair amount of my reason for trying running in the first place was the podcast! Yes, my name is Ms. D’orsay and I run because of a podcast.

My personal faves? The Heat Stroker Mix and the 2 HR Best of ISR.

Anyone else pick up a new activity or hobby during wedding prep?

As an asthmatic, I was always scared of and intimidated by running. But, I got into it in college, and now, love it — just wish I didn’t have such temperamental shin splints, which keep me from running as much as I’d like!

I got into free weight lifting and more “serious” strength training as I’ve been prepping for the wedding.

Good for you for trying something new — and liking it! I got into the run/walk thing almost 3 years ago, and I’ve been doing it ever since — doing my 3rd half marathon in September!

I’m still 11 months out from my wedding, but plan to work on some free weight stuff just to try to tone my triceps and back a little. I’m trying not to get my expectations too high, though! =)

Keep it up, and whatever the reason you started running, I hope you keep it up for the long “run”!

what kind of stuff is on that podcast?
I’m two weeks out and my body is TIRED.
I’m completely out of motivation and would love a spritz or two of it if you keep it bottled somewhere!

I’ve always been active, but never big on running itself. My fiance has always been a big runner though, and a few months ago I made an attempt to start running with him. I wasn’t sure how much I loved it, but it’s become a great way to spend some time together, working out, and occassionaly say something like - look out for the crazy black lab! Good for you - any chance you’ll ever attempt the 26.2?

I was into “running”–ahem–more like jogging when I lived back in Kansas and then I moved to the thin air state of Colorado and haven’t done it much since. HAHA I need to at least go out walking/hiking more though. Good for you on trying something new though :)

I’ve never used a podcast so I have no idea how to use it. Do you have to download it or is it just like a radio station you can dial into?

I started running in college and it got me into the best shape of my life. I usually run to either nerdy showtunes or Linkin Park. No middle ground, right? Haha.

I have dreaded running for so long, but I am giving it a go now. I always wanted to look like that picture–thanks for the inspiration!

That picture above of the really hard bodied girl… that’s me… even though I’ve never been to the beach. Just thought I’d let you know. Yeah. I run that fast too. And I wear bikini’s when I’m running that hard. Yep.

I recently moved to northern California for grad school. I think all the nice weather has helped me want to get out and run–especially in the spring and fall! I might have to check out those podcasts!

Do you like the JM Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism DVD? I just ordered it and am afraid I may not like it. I have done turbo jam and tae-bo and Core secrets but not any Jillian Michaels’ stuff yet…is it a good workout?

BTW that’s so awesome you’ve taken up running! I’d love to go running with you sometime, if I’m ever on the east coast ;) . “jogging” is totally “running”, too! I “run” 11:00 - 11:30 miles when I go for an easy run. My motto is - if I’m not having fun, I don’t do it! (unless Mr. BC is there to motivate me. running partners are the best!)

I’ve been thinking a lot about taking up running (and I mean jogging by this too!), so I’m going to have to check out those podcasts. Thanks for the tip! :)

I ‘run’ (jog) as well. A year ago I thought the marathon people were crazy, then it was a glorious summer so I just started running a little longer. Keeping my big goal all to myself. I didn’t start telling people I was training until I’d done about a 10 mile run and once you’re past that it’s just a matter of willpower. No matter what distance goal you have, start telling it to people, it’ll keep you going towards it. Keep it up, it’s a great thing to do.

Good for your running. I used to run (read: jog) before I developed a heart condition. I am recovered & HAVE to get back on the wagon! I married a marathoner (he’s running right now!), so I have a tough act to follow! He proposed @ the NY marathon. I love the pic of the bride running-cute! It’d be even cuter is she had sneakers on! My new wedding hobbies included endless needless shopping & hours on Weddingbee!

Yay for running! I just finished my first marathon this past weekend in Hurley, Wisconsin. If I can do it, anyone can. For the record, 26.2 miles IS as far as it sounds. There nothing like hitting that 23rd mile and realizing you’re STILL NOT DONE!

Whoa….so just this past weekend I was talking to someone who had just been to a wedding where the bride was an ultramarathoner. On the morning of her wedding, she put on her wedding dress and ran a mile in it! They said it was something she always dreamed of doing!

Wow, congrats! Running it so hard! I’ve done tons of other kinds of cardio and strength-training workouts, but I always felt the same way as you about running: I just couldn’t do it. Maybe I should give it a try!

I’m going to check out that podcast. I started jogging this spring and have been doing elliptical in this summer heat (not the same - I agree!) and I’m looking forward to getting back outside soon.

Running is one of the hardest things I do everyday and one of the most freeing. It’s part of me now.

i have a love/hate relationship with running……meaning, i’d love to hate it, but i can’t! i love that first pic you posted….if only! thanks for the tip on the podcast…..will have to check it out. if i’m having a rough day with running, i just keep telling myself, “an object in motion stays in motion.” that was my motto for my first ever marathon last year:-)

@Curlysue: a podcast is a free sortof “radio snippet”? You download it from Itunes and it’s free!

@pvaulter718: Hmmm,that’s a big maybe. Ideally yes, but let’s see how I do with a 5K, 10K and half marathon first…

@flbeachbride: I LOVE IT! I also enjoy shredding for 60 minutes, but if you’re looking for some sweet cardio BFBM is where it’s at!

@ladybuglove: oh I love that! I’m such a science nerd, how did that not pop into my head while running! Thanks!

Your story makes me both wary and hopeful — wary because I can’t run! (and, if I’m honest, I don’t want to…though it is a really easy way to work in some exercise), and hopeful because maybe I could.

Maybe I’ll give that podcast a try. ;)

Good for you! I have always resisted running as well since I injured my back…but I got on the treadmill a few days ago and ran 2 miles without getting tired, so I started to think that perhaps I could take up running as a new hobby (ok, probably more like jogging…but you get the point!)
