Mrs. Lightning, Cape Town Age and Occupation: 22, Journalist and Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Computer Scientist Engagement Date: December 27, 2008 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: Hout Bay Manor About Me: I'm a young American living abroad in the beautiful city of Cape Town with a wonderful South African fiance and our crazy kitty Zeus. We're young, driven and madly in love. Together we're pursuing our wildest dreams including our biggest undertaking yet, a vintage retrospective wedding filled to the brim with DIY madness. I have an unnatural attraction to cake, a passion for blogging and a love of good design. While I might be an overly obsessive creative with too many ideas and nowhere to put them, Mr Lightning is my biggest fan and I can't wait to make my true love mine.
About Mrs. Lightning

A Mexican Fiesta Rehearsal Dinner : wedding decor rehearsal Fiesta Sources: Mexican paper banners, bright centrepiece, watermelon margarita, invitation, mason jars, succulent and billy button bouquet, mariachi band, guacamole dip

With our mutual passion for Mexican food, Mr Lightning and I have decided on a Mexican Fiesta theme for our rehearsal dinner (to be hosted by his family 2 days before the wedding). It’s a nice contrast to the sleek, cool colours of our wedding and gives me an opportunity to show off how sweet and pretty a fiesta can be (no tequila shots and sombreros for this intimate affair).

I’ll make up some invitations in the next week and will start sourcing mason jars for the beverages and centrepieces. Other than that, I’ll get some brightly coloured flowers in orange, red, and pink, as well as some succulents for the tables. I’m not sure if we can get the traditional Papel Picado “Mexican Paper Banners” here in South Africa (pictured above in my inspiration board), but I’m sure I can replicate them with some brightly coloured tissue paper.

I can’t wait to work on something that isn’t black, white and gray for a change! :)

How much time are you spending on decor for your rehearsal? Will it be much like a mini-wedding?

Can I come? Oh wait, you live in another country? Hmmm, maybe buying that Jet Blue “all you can fly pass” would be worth it…lol

You may want to check etsy for the banners (I think I’ve seen them on there somewhere). Good choice of food- I <3 Mexican Food. Yumm.

Mexican food is yummmmy, and the theme will be so colorful and fun! I haven’t given ANY thought to our RD yet. A mexican theme would be interesting, though. FI and his family/friends are all Canadian and don’t really eat Mexican food, though. (One night I told him I was having a tostada for dinner and he had to google it!) I wonder how well that’d go over with all of them…

I think replicating the Mexican banners would probably be easy-ish with some colorful tissue paper and folding it up paper snowflake style.

Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I love Mexican food and I think this is a really fun theme for a party! I’d like to say I put this much thought into planning the decor for our RD. By the time we got to the RD, all I cared about was that there was food to eat and wine to drink! ;)

sounds delish….i love mexican food…especially tex-mex…yum! this is an option for us. we are looking into a byob, since it will kind of be like a mini-wedding (100 out of 200 guests attending!). we are also having ours 2 days before…mainly because it is going to be like a mini-wedding and we want to get plenty of rest before the big day!:-)

love your inspiration board….so pretty!

Oh I love Mexican. I wanted to do that for our rehearsal dinner, but a lot of our older family isn’t into that cuisine. It was a bummer. :) That’s fun that you get to do bright colors for this!

I’m not expecting our rehearsal dinner to be anything other than a regular old backyard party at our house — paper plates, awesome food, no decorations at all. =)

Love the idea of Mexican food. Yum!

Great news!! I found a shop nearby that sells all sorts of Mexican paraphernalia including real Papel Picado!! It was a bit pricey to buy a whole bunch so only got a few stands but I’ll mix in in with some other paper garlands.

@MexicanGirl: We plan on serving chili con carne with guacamole, salsa and tortillas as well as lost of nachos. To drink I’ll be making spiked lemonade and ice tea and if there is time I’ll give a go at some margaritas!! We actually have a few Mexican restaurants here in Cape Town.

I want our rehearsal dinner to be outside too. I think it will be simpler though. No flowers. Maybe some lanterns though.

Are you familiar with the shop called Hadeda in Dunkley Square?

You can find authentic Mexican decor there, and they also have all the cute little colorful decor items that would be perfect for a Mexican-themed party. Check them out!

I ADORE those banners, if you DIY be sure to post pictures for me to drool over! :) Good luck and I love the idea of color vs. the elegance of the wedding colors! :)

Mmmm, mexican food. If you don’t feel like spending lots on flowers, try some paper flowers. Tissue paper, wire or pipe cleaners and the same method as all the poms out there. Super easy and really fun. And don’t forget the cascarones. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascarones
