Meaningful Gifts

August 13th, 2009 @ 12:47 pm by Mrs. Glitter

Wedding gifts can sometimes be an awkward subject. There is always chatter about guests who give registry gifts, non-registry gifts, cheap gifts, strange gifts, or maybe none at all. Some couples don’t want or need wedding gifts. Others do. And how many times can I say “gifts” in this short paragraph?

Anyway, I thought I’d share with you a few of the most heartwarming and thoughtful items we were given. Just thinking about all the generosity and love from our guests gives me warm fuzzies!

Art: Our friend/mechanic (who also happens to be an art collector) gifted us an amazing watercolor painting. How cool is that? He often combs flea markets and estate sales to find little jewels - which is how he came across this one. It makes me want to go on Antique Roadshow and find out the history behind it!

Handmade dish towels and wooden spoons: As part of her gift, my awesome friend from grad school handmade these adorable little dish towels (which we use frequently). She also gave us two wooden spoons and wrote us a special message. I loved it so much, I thought I’d share it with you all.

When my parents got married a dear family friend gave them a wooden spoon with their wedding gift. She came from a small village in the U.K. where it was tradition to give the bride and groom a wooden spoon. This was to symbolize that no matter what life may bring, may your home be filled with love and may a pot on your stove always be full. Many wishes for love and full pots.

Tea Kettle: This was an item off our registry that I was stalking big time. This gift was given to us by my brother’s two best friends. We’ve known these guys for years. They are starving students, and the fact that they found it in their hearts to get us a gift blew me away. It meant so much.

I was speechless after reading so many sweet cards, messages, and notes from friends and family. In some cases, the card meant more to me than the gift.

What are some the most meaningful wedding gifts you’ve received? Were you blown away by the generosity and thoughtfulness of your guests?

All pictures courtesy of Mr. G and our amazing new camera!

oh wow I love the spoon & pot holders - the note really makes the gift. I firmly believe in the idea of a genuine, sincere gift (not the $$ behind the gift). I also absolutely agree that sometimes the card can mean much more than the gift. You must be very loved, Mrs. Glitter :)

I LOVE these gifts!!!! The best ones are always the one-of-a-kind, thoughtful, little hand-made treasures. We didn’t register, but we got surprise gitfts like artwork (a huge surprise), vintage stuff, and food!!!!!

The gesture of these gifts and their thoughtfulness is overwhelming! I love all three above, but especially the tea kettle. It is doubly sweet that a couple GUYS thought to get you this item, but they’re starving students, too. Warms my heart a little.

Love these gifts! Absolutely our favorite gifts were the ones we didn’t register for (we kept our registry very small anyway). When I give a gift, I like to think that the person using it or displaying it will remember me when they look at it. I know I remember our guests when I look at the treasures they gave us.

My favorite gifts ended up being things we didn’t register for — a handmade water jug by my husband’s aunt, a matted and framed wedding invitation given to us by a dear friend.

I LOVE the watercolor!!!!

FH has an aunt who is disappointed in our registry (told us it was LAME) and in turn decided to buy part of our honeymoon… which is great. But we registered for practical things and she totally made fun of them!! Like, she chewed us out for not registering for china, then sent us towels (VERY $$ ones we’ll prob never use bc we’re scared to) and marked the boxes “better than a vacuum, right?” Uh, wrong. I wish more people had your attitude about gifts!

We asked for donations to two major charities in lieu of gifts, but also let folks know that if they wanted to pick a different charity, that would be lovely, too. Many people gave to the Cancer Society and the Diabetes Association as we’d suggested, but they also found small, local cancer and diabetes organizations as well. That’s kind of the equivalent to an off-the-registry gift!

We had a DW, so we didn’t register and told people coming was enough of a gift. However, we still received many thoughtful gifts. A few friends sent up cheese, fruit and champagne to the bridal suite where I was getting ready that day, and another couple sent chocolate-covered strawberries and champagne to our honeymoon room. My sister and her bf gave us a hot air balloon ride at our honeymoon destination. Another friend got us a beautiful blown glass bowl from the Netherlands. It was really, really fun to see what people came up with!

My best friend from the age of 5 got us these incredible kitchen towels made from vintage fabric - I’ve never seen anything like them before!! Love it :) Also, another were these handmade, funky candlesticks that now adorn our mantle.

I love getting non-registry gifts. It’s that reason that I tend to give non-registry gifts as well :)

What a great post! My sister got a framed sketch of her wedding venue from her MOH, it was by far the sweetest gift.

Love the gifts!! I really like your dishcloths…probably because I make the EXACT same pattern and everyone in my family absolutely loves them. My gma has been making them for years and shared the pattern with me. They’re just so perfect!! Enjoy them =]

Yes! One of my husband’s family friends gave us four sets of their heirloom glasswear! We were absolutely blown away. They only have one son and they said he didn’t need 8 sets of glasses that “can’t go in the dishwasher.” But still!

@princetonbride: Sorry this response is so late! We got a Canon EOS 50d. Mr. G went a little crazy with researching. The 50d is exactly what we wanted/needed right now. We love it! Best of luck with camera shopping!
