Mrs. Mouse, Austin Age and Occupation: 25, Weddingbee Editor/Attorney Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Civil Engineer Engagement Date: December 19, 2007 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: Barr Mansion About Me: I just graduated from law school and will be taking the bar, getting married, going on a honeymoon with my guy, and then trying to figure out what I'm going to do with the rest of my life. I was born and raised in a small East Texas town, but I'm no country girl! I'm obsessed with British accents, fantasy (including Harry Potter, of course), and classic rock. My fiance and I consider ourselves both music and beer snobs--but every once in awhile we love to hear a crappy band and drink a cheap brew or two. We're planning an eco-friendly, casual, English garden affair for the end of summer, and we can't wait for it to get here!

Planning the Menu (Part II)

August 13th, 2009 @ 1:51 pm by Mrs. Mouse

Where were we? Oh yeah: the Dude and I had just finished sampling ten delicious appetizers and entrees. As the lights got dimmer and the bakers brought the cakes out, the Dude and I headed up to the main stage to grab a plate. Look how happy the Dude is!

Luckily, both of us still had enough room left for some dessert, because this was a huge plate of cake. Six different kinds of cake, to be exact.

When we got back to our table, the Dude saw that the couple across from us had each gotten their own plate. He was like, “Why didn’t we each get our own plate?” So the couple we were sitting with gave us one of theirs! At this point, we each had a plate like the one above.

Starting at the Southeast corner of the plate and going clockwise, these flavors were (1) orange, (2) apple cake filled with brown sugar frosting, (3) carrot, (4) New York cheesecake with chocolate leaves, (5) Italian cream, and in the middle (6) chocolate stout.

Our favorite cake hands down was the apple with brown sugar frosting. It was so moist, and the frosting was just the right amount of sweet. I think the light brown color looks so pretty next to the off-white icing. The Dude doesn’t like cheesecake, but I thoroughly enjoyed mine. It was a very tangy and creamy cheesecake, not a sugary one. Yum. The orange cake was runner up. And the chocolate stout, while it sounded amazing, was a bit of a letdown.

Here’s the Dude’s plate after he stopped for the first time. I’m pretty sure he kept going after this picture was taken!

Remember my dream cake?

Barr Mansion’s bakers agreed to try and make a tiered version of it for us! But instead of the chocolate and blueberry cake (which they don’t offer), we’ll go with the apple and brown sugar frosting cake.

The tasting really got both of us pumped for the big day. It felt good to get some major decisions made, and it really made the whole thing feel real.

Yum! My fave layer of our cake will be “Cinnfully Southern” — sweet potato, cinnamon and caramel flavors. Loooove the combo of sweet and savory!

Apple cake? Brown Sugar? Yes, please! My hubs would die. He really wants spice cake for our vow renewal, maybe I’ll suggest that.

BTW, the first pic of the Dude cracks me up. He’s got a great evil Happy smile.

Yummm… those flavors all sound soo good! I’m sorry the chocolate stoudt cake was a letdown, but Epicurious has a great recipe for a chocolate Guiness cupcake if you’re ever looking for an alternative!

The cake looks good. You should have seen how big my cake samples were for tasting - they gave us 1/4 sheet cakes of each flavor to bring home and share with family and friends for our tasting. Our grocery store bakery is awesome!
