Brushing It Off

August 14th, 2009 @ 5:18 pm by Mrs. Bunny

We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming of the Bunny Bridal Countdown to bring you a PSA on makeup.

Because only Mrs. Bunny would interrupt her recaps to talk about makeup, right? ;)

By now you probably know that I’m a proponent of what a good makeup brush can do for DIY makeup.

Specifically, I’m speaking of a nice, round, compact blush brush. I do most of my makeup application with my fingers, I admit. But there’s just no substitute for a good blush brush. They’re designed to glide over the apples of your cheeks and distribute a nice, even coat of powder up toward your temple.

Personally, I use the Mary Kay blush brush, but that’s only because I used to sell Mary Kay and had a couple brush sets left over.

It’s also nice to have a good brush or two for eye makeup. Fingers work well, but if you’re DIYing on your wedding day, you probably want to stay as clean as possible.

It’s easy to spend a lot of money on a brush or brush set, but what if you’re just getting introduced to the world of makeup in order to save some moolah for your wedding by going DIY? You probably don’t want to drop a lot of dough on something you may or not use after the wedding.

Enter these cuties! Each of these sets is from Target (get a gift card at your shower? I thought so.).

This Sonia Kashuk Hidden Treasure ($19.99) set is one of my faves for its stunning good looks!

I love the coral motif. According to online reviews, the handles are plastic, so they’re not overly heavy, and their shape keeps them from rolling away. Chic and handy!

If you’re looking for something more compact, you could try the Pixi Deluxe brush purse ($28.00).

For those of you who are fans of mineral makeup, this Eco Tools travel set is only $9.99! Perfect to pack for your honeymoon if you want to travel light.

I am seriously coveting this next one.

This Sonia Kashuk set has one brush wand with interchangeable magnetic heads. Brilliant! And only $17?

Unfortunately I’ve been unable to find this set online. :( I’d check out my local Target for these babies. (Oh, and if you find them, let me know. I waaaaant them!)

DIYing my makeup was a big part of me finding my bridal glow ala Mrs. Peep Toe.

More later about my wedding day makeup — including reviews of the NARS multiple in orgasm, Dior Blackout Waterproof mascara and CoverGirl’s new(ish) lipstain line.

*a.k.a End of PSA. Carry on!

I use MK brushes too :) I used to sell like five years ago actually! I still love to do my makeup everyday but I’m so nervous to do it on the BIG day because of my skin flare ups I can have (ecezma). UGH I will go look for those magnetic brushes though…sound so handy!

I love the idea of interchangeable heads on the brushes! I may have to do some investigating during my nes tTarget run. I’ll let you know what I find…

i was debating doing my own makeup too - it’s part of my “getting dressed for a big event” ritual, most of which is completely upside down for my big day. but i was worried i’d get horribly upset if my makeup didn’t go on smoothly .. so i’m outsourcing it after all!

I own the Ecotools set and let me tell you I love it! I use the small kabuki (is that what it’s called?) brush for my mineral powder foundation. It always put the perfect amount on and the longer brush is perfect for blush. And the other two are amazing at detailing your eyes. Definitely the best steal on brushes…

I’ve always wondered if that Nars blush shade was as great as it’s said to be. Can’t wait to hear. And those Eco tools- I want to go buy some right now!

My godmother used to sell mary kay like FOREVER, so last night I asked her if she would do my makeup. and YES! :) I’m so excited. I can do my makeup just fine, but I’m glad this will mean more bonding time with one of my favorite aunts :)
Do you have a favorite all-around brand of makeup? normally I use neutrogena and aveda (but aveda is harder to come across). is the nars really all it’s cracked up to be?

I’ve been using mineral makeup for years, long before it was “in”. I was given a Kabuki brush at the time, a nice fluffy one, and have been hooked on quality brushes ever since. Being
a tool nut as a jewelry artist, I just love great brushes for my make up too!

I have some old swivel Mary Kay brushes from the 90’s that are still quite nice. I have also seen some quality artist brushes in the Art Department at Micheals that look like they will do a really nice job for blush. They have a nice fan shape; the bristles are goat and sable.
Natural bristles respond to regular cleaning so
well.

I have those Sonia Kashuk brushes with the coral motif from Target because I thought they were just too cool to pass up.

FWIW, I can’t wait to read your next post. I’m in love with the Cover Girl Lip stain right now!

I have the worst brushes, so I use my fingers a WHOLE lot to apply makeup. I hope that’s not too awful!
