The First Dress Fitting

August 14th, 2009 @ 10:33 am by Mrs. Lightning

So, the fitting went quite well in person (the dress is almost finished), and I even toyed with the idea of a long veil for the ceremony only (as seen above), which my mom loved. It all looked great at the dressmaker and I took my new accessories with me to see how they work with the dress. I took some pictures and went on my way.

When I got home however, I scrutinised the pictures I’d taken. I saw that there were some things I didn’t really like, and I hope that I’ll either get over it or that it won’t be as noticeable to others.

If I take the puckering of the satin away (perhaps after it is steamed, as the dress hadn’t been), then it is really only the buttons on the back that seem a bit far down for my taste. I know the dress was made on a budget for me in a standard size, so I can’t expect miracles. And I guess the feeling I feel in it vs. how it looks in my shoddy camera pictures is what’s important. It’s also really comfortable, which is perhaps the most important aspect for me.

Here are my new accessories that I took with me. I decided on this pair of Kenneth Coles, which I found for R200 (about $25) because they were easy on my feet. The bag was bought on sale for R200 from Accessorize (It looks and feels vintage, which I love), and finally, the headpiece, which I posted about earlier.

I’m undecided on jewelry as of yet, mainly because I’m thinking about having this as my something borrowed/blue or old (I certainly have enough new things). Also, there is so much to choose from that I don’t quite know where to start (sale season is not helping, either).

The ladies at Cindy Bam have said my dress will be ready to pick up a week before the wedding, which I was a bit disappointed about as I’d have liked to try it on at home. But then again, this is exactly why it is probably better I don’t get it early, and that it goes straight home to my parents’ after I have my final fitting. I’d probably obsess over it and over-scrutinise it. And I also have a crazy kitty who might have a go at it if I’m not careful (think of the scene from Meet the Fockers—she’s seriously that crazy).

When did you/will you bring your dress home? Did you try on your dress repeatedly once it came home with you?

I love the dress! You are absolutely beautiful in it and I think the silver is beautiful. Also, kudos on the great shoe & purse steal! They’re perfect for the outfit :)

You look great! I agree with over scrutinizing sub par pictures of yourself in your dress. I was doing that, too, and at my second to last fitting last night, was surprised by how great it actually looks! Not at all like what my photos were showing me!

I’m not sure I’ll be able to take my dress home. It won’t be done until Monday, and then they will be steaming it and hanging it until closer to the wedding. I’m actually hoping we can just pick it up the day before the wedding!

My dress came home with me the day I bought it b/c I bought it at a sample sale. My mom has actually taken it since then and has it held hostage b/c I would be constantly trying it on. She wants me to continue to have that “WOW” feeling. I’m actually very nervous to have to take it in for alterations just b/c I love having it home.

Wow! I totally see how this dress fits you and your mom– it feels ‘bridy’ with the veil, but is so modern and vintage looking otherwise. Love it!

I love the dress and your accessories - I can’t wait to see them together. It looks *so* fabulous. I can’t try on my own dress now because it’s being altered at my seamstress. … I miss it… On the other hand, it does prevent me from trying it on every day - which is probably a good thing considering that I want to do cartwheels in it.

my dress won’t come home with me until after the wedding. sounds strange i know but i live w/ my FI. my last fitting will be the week before the wedding so my parents (who are oot) can come along with me and see it. we’ll pick it up a day or 2 before the wedding. it’ll go directly to my parents’ hotel room, where i’m getting dressed for the wedding.
it’s a little tight timing wise so i hope it all works smoothly!

I love your dress, shoes and bag. I love how your dress is so glamorous!! I wish I had been able to take my dress home sooner. Because it needed extensive alterations, I didn’t pick it up until 2 days before the wedding!

The dress is absolute gorgeous! Seriously! And you have great accessories. It’s exactly what you said - a lot of it is exactly how you feel in the dress instead of the projection you may imagine when you see the pictures afterward. Besides - the pictures look pretty great!

i had it home a month before, then brought it back 5 days before for a final fitting. during the month, i tried it on twice, only to horrifically realize it didn’t fit!

i think keeping it at the store may be a good idea, like you said, to avoid over scrutiny!

That is a truly fantastic dress!! The color is amazing, the lace and other details are gorgeous, and hello sexyhot shoes! Thise shoes are killer *and* what a great price…

I can totally understand how the little less-than-perfect things can jump into your mind and stick with you, just begging to be obsessed over. However, there is so much that is right (and, dar I say, right ON!) about you in your dress that I strongly encourage you to focus on that instead. (And yes, when I finally find my dress and *if* I find myself going down the same road, I’ll let you know and you can throw my words right back at me. Fair’s fair!)

Hot, hot, hotness!

beautiful!!! It’s so wonderful. When you first said you were having a silver dress, I was a little on the fence because i couldn’t quite picture it. But seeing this on you, with the contrasting lace, OH MY GOD. Have them make me one too, K? :)

I went to pick my custom dress up a week before the wedding and it still needed some tweaks! I didn’t take it home until 3 days before the wedding!

I’m a little disappointed i couldn’t wear it more before the big day since now it is sitting at my parents house across the country and I never see it!

You look lovely! I just got the call yesterday that my dress is in, and I’m resisting going to pick it up because I still have eight months left, and I would try it on approximately 100 times between now and then if I had it at my house. So I’m gonna wait and pick it up next time I’m headed to my parents, and reluctantly leave it there.

You look amazing!! Don’t over-analyze the pics - I did the same thing with mine before I posted them in my last dress post and then realized I was being dumb and the dress is fab, just like yours! Looove the silver.

I adore the dress, it has a vintage feel! And since I am not a bride-to-be I want the purse and the shoes, they can make an outfit look fabulous!!! Great wedding dress combo!!

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments :) I’m really looking forward to seeing it again soon. I might try and persuade the dressmaker to get it a bit sooner so I can see how everything looks together but it will definitely be living at my parents if I do!

At my first fitting I thought the dress was great, but when I saw pics afterwards I realized, “No, no, no, no, no.” It didn’t photograph well on me: too much fabric (I’m too short and petite to pull it off), and too ‘debutante’ for my taste. I wanted something modern and couture.

The designer (a fabulous young South African designer) reworked the bottom portion of the dress, and bit by bit it’s becoming a beautiful thing. I won’t get to see or try on the dress again until a few weeks before the wedding, but I’m confident they’re going to give me what I want.

It’s so pretty! I especially love the back. Stick with your gut. If you felt good in it, then you’ll feel good in it on your wedding day. And your photographers will be able to take amazing pictures of you in it!

I like that you are going for that vintage look! When I went to see The Proposal, I thought the dress she wore in the movie was actually pretty (it was a grandmother’s dress / very 20’s looking). I walked past a wedding store about 2 years ago and saw “my wedding dress.” It was exactly what I wanted, cap sleeves and a sweetheart neckline. Now that I am actually looking for my dress and not just walking past stores, I can’t find that perfect dress! It’s kind of making me a little mad. =) I’ll find the right one eventually though. Have you decided if you’re having a live band or a DJ for your wedding? I found a really nice Chicago Wedding Band that I may decide to have for my wedding, but I don’t know if it really is better to have a live band or a DJ. Any thoughts? Right now I’m leaning more towards the live band, just because I feel like it adds more excitement.
