Easy As Pie

August 16th, 2009 @ 5:00 pm by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

“Nom. Nom. Nom.” That’s my new favorite phrase as of late on Weddingbee. It’s been showing up in almost every post about food, from any bee, and that’s why I had to use the ubiquitous phrase here today. Because I want to talk about pie. Soooo, nom, nom, nom.

Easy As Pie : wedding favors food Pie Apple Pie with Cheddar Crust from Martha Stewart

We’ve placed our pie bar order with Teacup Bakery out of Denver. Twelve all-organic, all-natural pies. Ten flavors. That’s right.

It’s become somewhat of a tasting pie bar. Originally, we’d ordered just enough pie for each guest to have one slice. But now that we’ll be running the gamut from lemon meringue to mixed berry, I know people will want to taste more than one flavor. Especially when they’re sitting there so tantalizingly for the entire dinner on their pretty and mismatched cake stands.

So, we’re having each pie cut into 12, instead of 8, slices. Our flavors include: pumpkin, apple caramel (yes, with homemade caramel drizzled on top), chocolate cream, banana cream, mixed berry, peach, blueberry peach, blueberry, cherry, and apple. The fruit will be bought fresh from the farmer’s market in Denver late this summer and then frozen when it’s at its peak, so it’s prime for our pies.

As if I didn’t have enough on my plate already, reader GaBGal added another slice to the pie. Literally. Check out this adorable tutorial she sent me for pie pops from Bakerella.

I’m tempted to bake these, cart them eight hours up to Devil’s Thumb Ranch, and toss them in our guests’ out-of-town bags as a preview to our meal. Or, maybe this could be their favor?

Do I dare? I’d love some tips: How would I transport them? Would they need to be frozen? How would you package them? And, finally, tell me about your edible favor?

Ooh, all those pies sound fantastic. I made edible favors, buckeyes, and it was really tough to do them at the last minute so they’d be fresh at the wedding! Then again, I’d never made them before — so I’d certainly suggest a trial run!

Do you think you’ll have time before you make the drive up there to bake 50-100 pie tartlets? I would do a trial run of a small batch right now, complete with the stick to make it a “pie on a stick” (so cute! ;) ). It’s amazing how many things pile up at the last minute - even weeks before the wedding. It sounds like it could be wonderful, but maybe your guests won’t appreciate the pie-pops as much as you’d like, seeing as how they’ll be having pie for dessert. then again, you could always have a pie-pop eating contest ;)

Oh my god those pie pops look awesome. I think they’d be awesome in the OOT bags. Just a little hint of whats to come at the wedding. I would just cover the top in a cellophane bag with the stick sticking out and tie the bag with a pretty ribbon. Good luck!

i love bakerella…she just inspires me to bake my little heart out! i would say if you can delegate it to some one, then do it. it might stress you out. then again, my mother bakes when shes stressed so its up to you my dear!

I think they are so adorable, but like Miss Bear Cub, I fear that they will be a lot of work!! For packaging, I would just slip a clear cellophane bag over them (can get them at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby in the candy making aisle) and tie a cute ribbon around the bottom of the pie pop. However.. I fear that in transporting them, they may break a little bit, and you may have pie crust pieces at the bottom of the cellophane bags. Look at Bakerella’s… even hers have broken pie crusts in her sample pics… But if your heart is set on it, do it!! :)

adorable, and so tasty looking. But I think Miss Bear Cub is right, you should definitely do a trial run to see how long it would really take you. And then maybe take some in to work or something just to get an idea of transportability?

OOO they are so cool!

I made cupcake pops and they tended to fall apart awfully quick. I bet the pie pops aren’t very durable. I forsee gooey cherry fillings in your future

oooh! i’m all over the non-fruit pie options. i’m not much of a baked fruit fan, lol.

i agree with miss bear cub. definitely do a test run and see how it holds up. you can freeze a couple and see how long it can go in the freezer. good luck!

Yummy! Pies are so much more delicious than cake, in my opinion. I’m drooling over apple caramel and blueberry peach. Save me a slice?
And I say go for the pie pops! At least give them a try.
