About Mrs. Bear Cub

Groomstyle & Dudestyle - Part 1

August 16th, 2009 @ 2:05 pm by Mrs. Bear Cub

Mr. Bear Cub isn’t exactly a tuxedo kind of man. And that’s OK - I love him for it! I want him to be comfortable on his wedding day; I want him to take pride in what he wears. You know, just so long as it’s nice. ;) He usually wears whatever he grabs first out of his drawer (of crumpled t-shirts), and usually the clothes that fill the drawer were bought by either his mom (several years ago) or me (now). He just can’t be bothered with shopping for himself, unless it involves Gore-Tex or eVent material, high-performance wool, or anything found for a steal at an REI scratch-and-dent sale. That’s Mr. Bear Cub’s style, and I love him! That makes it a lot easier for me to find his wedding day attire. ;) He’s a practical guy - being able to wear these clothes after the big day is important.

At first I imagined him in a dark brown suit for the wedding, but then I saw this:

Perfect! A dark brown velvet/corduroy sport coat plus British khaki slacks fit the bill! Last September, before Mr. BC & I moved to Chile, we hit up a J.Crew in Portland to see how they could help us out. It being fall, the corduroy jackets were in season! I can totally picture Mr. Bear Cub using his corduroy jacket to teach in when he’s a professor at a university some day. :)

But since this is more of a formal affair, the darker chocolate brown is the way to go with the jacket! We got him the washed corduroy sport coat in “stout”, a crisp white button-down shirt, and Mr. BC picked out the tie himself!

The “ensemble” - waiting safely for us in Portland!

We only recently found the rest of his outfit - the slacks. I prefer to catch the sales on J.Crew whenever possible, and these slick slacks were on sale for $70!

While Mr. Bear Cub claims to not know anything about fashion, he must have good intuition - he absolutely loves a good pair of linen slacks. He likes to call them his “weekend pants” because of how comfortable they are! The Irish-linen suit pant from J.Crew is quite a bit nicer than his normal “weekend pants”; they’ll be upgraded to conference- and weekend-lounging-status after the wedding.

As for the kicks, at first I had no idea what Mr. Bear Cub should wear. I have enough trouble finding my own shoes, let alone his! I certainly don’t know anything about “wing tips” or whatever they’re called. All I knew is that I wanted his socks to show. I love a good socks ’n’ peep-toe peep show, wedding style! Plus Mr. BC really really likes socks. A lot. Sooner or later I’ll need to complete his look with the snazziest of snazzy socks. He wanted to wear Bircken-socks (Birckenstocks with socks), but I put the kibosh on that. ;) Besides, he needs to be comfortable dancing in these shoes!

grad students have all the fun

So I hit up my other old faithful (besides the usual J.Crew), and found these stylin’ sneaks!

Perfect for the outdoorsy guy who just so happens to look sharp! Patagonia has some great footwear for men that don’t always frequent Wall Street, but still want to get some dual-use out of their “nice shoes”. As soon as he put them on, Mr. BC didn’t want to take them off! These will probably turn into “weekend shoes”. ;)

Now we have a bigger challenge: grooms-dudes & dudes-of-honor style.

Did you go against the tuxedo grain? Where did you get your groom’s wedding day attire from? How do you think Mr. BC’s attire is shaping up? :)

My husband also wore a necktie at our wedding and he still looked gorgeous. It is all in the style!

wow! Mr. BC really does have some style! That is a great look for him! Plus, how awesome for him to wear that later on in life - imagine the great feeling he’ll get to put that on! Fiance just blew me out of the water the other day with a request for a vest under his suit jacket for the wedding! He’s never been one to assert his style (same as Mr. BC, clothes purchased as gifts by me, my mom or his mom) and so this was really suprising! No tuxes for us but some nice styling outfits!

That outfit should be perfect. My guy wore a grey suit, and he insisted he get a purple shirt and orange tie. Yow! But now I get insanely jealous whenever he suggests wearing the suit again. I know it’s practical but I just don’t like that he’ll get use out of his wedding clothes!

I love the velvet courd. Do you think it would be hot in September in Oregon? I am not sure what the weather is like there. But it looks great! Very rich.

Seriously seriously love this. Do your dudes-of-honor need to be wearing jackets? You could have them all wear khaki-colored pants, white button-downs, ties, and a brown vest. That way they could all find their own, still match, but yet look different from Mr. BC.

Wow! Mr. BC is going to look sharp! I love that you two found a way to dress him up without making him look like someone else.

We nixed tuxedos from the get-go - our wedding just isn’t that formal. I wish that we could ask all of our groomsmen to get nice slacks like the ones you bought for Mr. BC. We just decided to go the least expensive route possible and get khakis at half off from Old Navy. While they’re not very dressy, they’ll fit just fine with the Vans that we bought for all of the guys.

That will be one good looking groom =] And it’s nice that he’ll have these different pieces to wear in the future instead of just renting a tux from somewhere.

I love the cord-jacket-and-slacks idea! Good thing you put your foot down on the Birkenstocks, though, haha. :)

What a stylin outfit! I also agree, skipping the “Birkensocks” is the way to go. ;)

Love it! That’ll look great. I understand the temptation to wear Birks on the wedding day too - I briefly tossed around the idea of wearing mine :) Looks like the shoes you guys found will be a great option though!

He got a three-piece slim cut lighter gray faint pinstripe suit and his guys all got plain charcoal gray suits during the mens wearhouse sale. His was a couple hundred off the normal price and theirs were buy one get one free. Your guys outfit seems to fit a pacific northwest guy just perfectly.

I love Mr. BC outfit so far! I must say, I’m actually letting my man wear the birkenstocks. But without socks. ;) We got his outfit from Tommy Bahama. He’s wearing “weekend pants” with a linen shirt.

[...] you recall what Mr. BC is going to wear, I think the groomsdudes would look nice in lighter brown sport coats [...]

The outfit looks great, and a lot more comfortable than a tux. Comfort is something that is often overlooked at formal occasions but much of the attention being focussed on you two for most of the day, being relaxed, confident and not sorting/correcting you outfit constantly will help no end.
