About Mrs. Mary Jane

I Sewed a Satisfactory Sash

August 16th, 2009 @ 6:35 pm by Mrs. Mary Jane

My dress, if you’ll recall, came with a black ribbon sash. After receiving it, I did state that I wanted to get a green one. And then I stuck the dress in my closet and did nothing with it for most of the summer.

Finally, a few weeks back, I bought some “spinach” colored taffeta. And finally, two nights ago, I sewed me a sash.

Here’s my dress looking all naked without its sash.

And here are my supplies.

I bought two yards of the fabric because I didn’t want to have to join together two pieces of fabric to make the sash. As a result, I knew I was going to have green taffeta coming out the wazoo for years to come, but what’s a girl to do? I measured and cut off a strip about 5″ wide.

Then I folded the strip in half and sewed it up…

And turned my newly formed “tube” inside out to hide the seam.

It looked kind of like a snake, so I ironed it flat:

Then, I sewed up the ends, and Voila! One green sash.

I think it looks pretty good. It isn’t perfect. To be honest, this project took me about 45 minutes and by the time I was half-way through, I was pretty convinced that I’d be trying to find another alternative to this somewhat-lumpy homemade wonder. In a pinch, this’ll work though!

Whether the sash works out for me or not, I did manage to make a couple of very functional wall-matching pillowcases to adorn some pillows in our three-season room!

Did you make any part of your wedding day ensemble? What did you make, and were you happy with the results?

I LOVE the color! My moms dress was very close to that color , she has the skin to pull it off. I made my veil. It was perfect for me.

Keep me far away from the thread and needles! This is beautiful though. Congrats :)

I’m terrible at sewing, but I love how well your pillowcases match the room color! Bravo! : )

I think it’s really beautiful - if you’re still unhappy with it, I’d suggest making another with a lightweight interfacing ironed onto the wrong side, to give it a bit more “heft,” ironing it REALLY well with a LOT of steam, and/or top-stitching along the bottom edge with a very closely matched thread to give it a more finished look.

I’m making the sash for my dress, and my fabric is a satin which is a little more lightweight than taffeta, so I am going to line it with interfacing before I sew it up!

love the colour MJ and yes to interfacing if you want to try it again but before you do that, what about putting the dress on with the sash first because it will give you a different look than just on the hanger. the spare room at home is my sewing room so for our wedding, i made my own sarong (beach wedding) and after the wedding i turned it into hair scrungys. love the pillow!

Woohoo! I plan on making my own sash to wrap around a flouncy black dress to wear to a wedding. This way I’m not wearing “all black” lol. Cheater, I know.

I think your sash looks great! As was mentioned previously, top stitching on the outside seams would probably make you a bit hppier with it. Good luck!!!

I love how the sash brings even more life to you dress! :) looks beautiful!!! - I wanted a purple sash but because I just changed the top of my dress (yesterday) I don’t think it would be flattering any more :(

It looks great and I love the pillow =]
I’m thinking about making a much skinnier “sash” and using it to tie up the back of my dress instead of the white that it comes with just to add a little color but I haven’t decided one way or another yet.

I love that pop of color! I don’t think you’ll be able to buy anything more perfect. And your handmade sash will be such a sweet keepsake from your wedding. Something you can pass onto another generation and say, “I made this myself to wear on my wedding day.” :)

Looks good, but if you’re gonna try and get out some lumps. Test some spray starch on your extra fabric and see if it leaves a mark. If it doesn’t then spray the heck outta that sash and iron it flat.

Try cutting the sash out on the bias (45 degree layout to side edge of fabric instead of parallel). Bias cuts have much more give and should look much better around a shaped object (like your waist). Just note that if you cut it on the bias, don’t interface it.

I love what you’ve done here with your sash. I am attempting to make my bridesmaids matching sashes. How did you finish your ends? I know one of the ends could be cut and finished at the 45 degree angle with your sewing machine. Did you hand stitch the other end?

This month’s Glamour magazine talks about how sashes were all over the runway, and suggests 3-to-6 inch ribbon from M&J Trimming or someplace like that.

The sash is great! I think you tie ladies are crazy, very talented, but crazy. I’m still working on sewing a semi-straight line over here!

I love that green! I don’t know if I would want to add on anything to my dress, but who knows what I’ll be thinking by the time I actually buy the dress! Right now I’m focused on finding the right style, and then I’ll decide if I want white or off white, and then go from there. Is that green going to be anywhere on your fiance or bridesmaids/groomsman? Has anyone ever decided against having live bands at their wedding. That’s another dilemma of mine. I found a great Chicago Wedding Band to play, but I’m not sure about how I’ll feel about a limited amount of songs being played. Any suggestions?
