Mrs. Lightning, Cape Town Age and Occupation: 22, Journalist and Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Computer Scientist Engagement Date: December 27, 2008 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: Hout Bay Manor About Me: I'm a young American living abroad in the beautiful city of Cape Town with a wonderful South African fiance and our crazy kitty Zeus. We're young, driven and madly in love. Together we're pursuing our wildest dreams including our biggest undertaking yet, a vintage retrospective wedding filled to the brim with DIY madness. I have an unnatural attraction to cake, a passion for blogging and a love of good design. While I might be an overly obsessive creative with too many ideas and nowhere to put them, Mr Lightning is my biggest fan and I can't wait to make my true love mine.

A Venue for Photographs

August 17th, 2009 @ 3:34 pm by Mrs. Lightning

The time has come for Mr. Lightning and I to select a venue for photographs. We have decided to buck tradition once again and have our formal photographs taken before the ceremony for two reasons. One: because it makes use of the best light, considering our wedding is in the evening. Two: because we won’t have to leave our beloved guests unattended with our reception to follow directly after the ceremony (it being the same venue for both, after all).

With the decision to take photographs before the wedding, we are also now able to select a unique location in which to take them. With Cape Town being such a beautiful and diverse city, it hasn’t been easy to pin down the right location for us (we need good weather and wet weather options). But just to let you in on what we are looking at, these are some of the contenders thus far…

The East Fort in Hout Bay. The East fort is (apparently) the oldest operating gun battery in the world. The ruins below are of an old house that look out over the East Fort and Hout Bay Harbour, making this the closest photo location to our venue. My photographer recommended this location, as it is where she had her portraits taken for her own wedding. I really love the idea of having a location that is in stark contrast to our formal attire.

Rhodes Memorial. This monument is situated next to the University of Cape Town and overlooks the city’s southern suburbs. This location is quite powerful to behold and regularly used for photo shoots.

Delos, a landmark in the Historic Bo Kaap area. This magnificent store is just up the road from us, and when you drive past it, you are almost blinded by the glimmer from the thousands of beautiful crystals that adorn the chandeliers which this shop produces. I’m not sure how well these would photograph, but if the pictures below are anything to go by, I think it might make for some interesting portraits.

The New Space Theatre. Another historic Cape Town landmark, this theatre has recently been refurbished, but still boasts its old world charm.

The Grand Daddy Hotel’s Penthouse Trailer park. This unique hotel has it’s very own collection of vintage Airstream trailers on its roof!! It’s a great hotel with an equally awesome bar, known as the Daddy Cool bar and a host of other quirky treats. The vintage trailers and restored elevator (it’s old and beautiful) are what have made this an option for us.

Does anyone have any preferences from my list so far? All these locations have a vintage/old world theme, so I’ll be looking at some urban/modern options as well (again, perhaps a nice contrast to our slightly vintage attire).

The East Fort or Rhodes Memorial look great.

You’re making me want to book a ticket to Cape Town . . . hmm, we are looking for a honeymoon location . . .

The first one looks really awesome. I agree with you about the contrast between formal attire and the old ruins. Beautiful choices!

The East Fort in Hout Bay looks amazing! I love different places that seem to contrast wedding attire like junkyards, ruins, etc. I think the pictures would look great here plus your photographer will definitely know where to take the best shots!

i love the look of east fork in hout bay… then you could also do some along chapman’s peak drive… those would just be AMAZING. i love it, i am really jealous of you getting married in cape town, i would love to go back and get married in the country where we fell in love! whatever you choose will just be gorgeous.

Given your theme, I LOOOOVE the Delos store, it looks perfect! There’s a restaurant in NYC called Pipa that’s next to a home furnishings store (it’s wierd, I know, don’t know why it’s set up like this) but the restaurant houses ALL of the store’s chandeliers and everytime we go there, the pictures are always AMAZING (and these are just amateur, we’re having sangria at dinner on a night out pics, nothing pro or anything)….the Delos store def gets my vote!

I’m as big a fan of stark constrasts as the next gal, but with your ‘old hollywood’ style silver dress, I’d have to keep the chandelier store in there as an option. Or the old theater.

the east fort and memorial look like great good weather sites. i’d be worried about snagging your dress on some rock but if you hoist it up, i’m sure it’ll be great.

Gorgeous areas…I wonder if FI would agree to move our venue to another continent?

Um, can’t you do ALL OF THEM!??!?!

Seriously, I have no words. Each venue is breathtaking in its own right, I wouldn’t be able to choose in your position! Hopefully everyone else can help you with the decision ’cause all I can do it swoon!

WOW! i can’t wait to visit South Africa next year!

okay, now that that’s out of the way….i would say pic 1 or 2. they are all absolutely beautiful pics, but the 1st and 2nd pictures are outdoors and just so picturesque (for lack of a better word), and i feel you can get some great pics in your venue for indoor pictures.

btw: thanks for the info on the 6 for 6:30. i thought that’s what it meant, just wanted to clarify. i love it and think i will use it, even if our guests (save for a few) will not understand. some of our friends and family tend to show up a 1/2 hour later and this may resolve the issue. i don’t mind if people call me up and ask. you’re right, it’s actually quite clever.

ok. sorry to hijack the post….i was too lazy to search for the other:-)

Yay for finally seeing a couple of locations I recognise on Weddingbee! You HAVE to fit in at least two of them. That way you can do the ruiny contrast of the old buildings versus the chandeliery glamour of the chandeliers, which goes with your theme.

So my vote is for East Fort and Delos. But I also ADORE the theatre. Bear in mind that you must have one outside location - the light will just be much better! Nothing like natural light, IMO.
