About Mrs. Bruschetta

Dressing A”pope”priately

August 17th, 2009 @ 5:38 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

My name is Miss Bruschetta, and I’m a two-dress bride. Why am I springing this on you at such a late date? Allow me to explain.

Our honeymoon will begin with a “Roman Holiday” of sorts — four days in Italy’s capital city. And when in Rome… well, you gotta see the Pope!

(source)

Mr. Bruschetta — also known as the Chief Honeymoon Planner — researched how we could secure tickets for an audience with the Pope.

We learned about the “Sposi Novelli“, and the mister set to work to ensure we would be able to participate in this blessing.

Working through the Diocese of Camden, Mr. Bruschetta reached the correct person who was able to assist him by sending a letter to Rome inquiring about tickets for the Papal visit. We received a copy of this letter, along with instructions for how to pick up our tickets. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

We’re hoping to secure seats as close to the front as possible, since couples in these coveted spots receive a special greeting — sometimes individually! — from the Holy Father. How can we snag these seats? Well, according to everything I’ve read, we’ll need to be armed with our marriage certificate. And, we should plan on wearing the recommended attire…

(source)

Here’s where we ran into a few pesky hindrances. Since the mister is renting his tux, we’ll be using an alternate groomal garment — a simple black suit. And I really didn’t have any desire to schlep my gown on a plane, and then around Italy, just for this one reason.

I’ve also, um, been pretty busy planning this little party we have coming up at the end of the month. So unfortunately, the importance of seeking a floor-length, white dress while summer attire still ruled the clothing store racks slipped my mind. I was gearing up for a full-fledged panic attack, when my hero(ine) came to the rescue.

Recognize her? Yup, it’s the lovely Mrs. Perfume, who sent me pictures of a dress she thought might work well, and offered to mail it to me so I could try it out myself. And several days later, I excitedly tore into the newly-arrived package.

The dress almost fits perfectly. (It’s a smidgen snug around the waist, but I’m pretty confident my commitment to pre-wedding workouts will help ensure my wedding dress stand-in looks as good on me as it does on Mrs. Perfume.) I’m also planning on pairing the dress with a white pashmina, to ensure it’s modest enough for the Papal Audience.

Thanks to Mrs. Perfume — who’s graciously allowing me to bee-orrow her dress — I was able to easily (and cheaply!) cross something else off the to-do list.

Are you attending any post-wedding events that require a white dress? Will you wear your wedding dress again, or a stand-in?

That dress is beautiful! Not to alarm you, but are you sure that you will have your marriage certificate when you leave for your honeymoon? I think it varies from place to place, but in general, I thought your officiant/priest has to submit the license to the local office after your wedding, and then you get the marriage certificate a few weeks later. Obviously this varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and I’m sure you’ve done your homework, and I can’t remember if you’re leaving for your honeymoon right away or delaying it, but it just occurred to me when I was reading your post so I thought I’d mention it!

Seriously, a once in a lifetime experience! I hope you get the front row!!! Can’t wait to hear all about it!

Also, you’ll probably want to wear a slip and something other than dark blue panties (like I did in the picture).

Can’t wait to read your post on the experience!

From one Catholic to another…

I’ve been to Saint Peter’s before. You NEED a wrap or bolero or something. You WILL NOT be allowed in Saint Peter’s with your shoulders exposed. You can’t even get into the Sistine Chapel with exposed shoulders or knees.

I went on a school trip in high school and they wouldn’t let anyone in with a hat. I had to buy a very expensive sarong like wrap in the square when I was there because I had a tank top and shorts on. Had to cover up like it was a cape.

What a great opportunity though!

Okay, so I re-read and saw you have a pashima. I just got so nervous for you when I saw the straps. I heard a horror story this week of a bride buying her gown here, and then taking it to Rome, only to have to spend hundreds to get a custom wrap made on short notice!

Years ago I read about a photographer who set up wedding portraits of himself and his wife all over the place–they brought their wedding togs with them wherever they went, and took gorgeous formal pictures all across Europe.

You could totally do that. It would justify the dress-schlepping.

I know it was mentioned already and you are planning to bring a pashmina but maybe you want to go for a bolero with actual sleeves. I don’t know what the specific bridal rules are but to enter the buildings, you must wear sleeves. I saw this done on my visit (2003, previous Pope) and there were about 6 couples “on stage” with the Pope, each got a quick blessing. We saw one couple wandering Rome in their wedding attire later - this made for some cute photos- think Gelato and open air markets. Good luck, can’t wait to hear how it goes!

If only I were Catholic! What a cool tradition to bless Newlyweds. It’s too bad the individual blessings are “discontinued permanently”

We had sposi novelli tickets, it was really great! Just a couple of things to comment on:

1. Marriage Certificate, arrange with your church to fax it to your hotel in Rome. If it is not possible as it usually takes two weeks, ask your priest or the congregation’s pastor to fax a letter stating that you were married at their church on (date), by (priest’s name).

2. You must be completely wrapped up upper arms and sholders. I wore a pashmina.

3. To be in the front row, wear sneakers, and get to the Vatican by 5:30am or earlier with snacks (water and crackers), we arrived at 5:40am and there were 3 sets of brides there already. If facing the Vatican you want to be at the left most entrance. They open the gates around 8:30ish, people start pushing to get to the front, it’s mayhem. Be prepared to have you and your husband split up. Getting through security is a mess. I’m not a good runner, thankfully my husband is quick on his feet and sprinted to the sposi novelli area and snagged us the last set of seats in the front row.

The pope is the sweetest man in person! It was such a wonderful feeling to meet him and recieve a blessing. Plus be sure to buy the pictures from the photographer on site. They take great pictures and they were relatively inexpensive. About 4 Euros a picture.

Here was my post:

Good luck!

Hi there,

That’s me stood in St Peter’s square up there, if I’d known I was going to end up on this website I might have found a suit that fit properly! (cuz obviously going to see the Pope obviously wasn’t motive enough…)

Just wanted to let you know *NOT* to by shy when you get there about getting near the front and making sure you are as near the Pope as possible because the european couples (especially the Italians) will basically push an old lady down the stairs if they have to and you will end up stood at the back peering over somebody’s shoulder (actually, we found my wife a chair to stand on!).

Hope you have a great day!

James
