Did you dream about a white wedding dress when you were a kid?
Yeah, me too.
My mom, on the other hand, had grand plans of an intricately embroidered wedding sari.
And this is how I ended up as a two-dress bride.
(Well, you know, disregarding the fact that a sari isn’t technically a dress.)
First up, the wedding dress.
So here is where I admit that I stalled as long as I could to go dress shopping. I was completely freaked out about it. I thought all my body flaws would be magnified. I didn’t want to stand in front of big mirrors. I didn’t want to be pressured to buy something right away. And I really didn’t want random strangers to see me in my underwear.
But time was starting to run out, so I dragged myself out on a Saturday in February with my mom and Bridesmaid R.
I was beyond eager to have the whole thing over with. So eager that I didn’t even have time to comb my hair or put on makeup. (Why, yes, I was running late. How did you guess?)
Luckily that’s not a prerequisite for trying on dresses…
Dress #1: Blue by Enzoani Brighton

I almost bought this dress on the spot. And, really, I’m too indecisive to buy a wedding dress on the spot.
I loved it. R loved it. My mom liked it a lot but also thought I was a little too well-endowed for this particular dress.
Well, okay (and I’m a little bit ashamed to admit this), I did spend a few minutes thinking about the fact that the dress has silver lace and one of my wedding colors is gold. But luckily I snapped out of it and realized that no one was actually going to accuse the bride of clashing with the decor.
I mean, you wouldn’t accuse me of that, right?
Dress #2: Pronovias Dango

Isn’t the bottom of this dress awesome? R and my mom hated it, though. They thought I needed something a little more sparkly.
Dress #3: Sophia Tolli Paulette

This was a hundred times heavier than anything else I tried on (seriously, a hundred!) and, so, was immediately out of the running. Because, well, I’m kind of assuming that drowning is the entirely wrong feeling to have on your wedding day.
Dress #4: Sottero & Midgley JSM1103

R saw another bride trying this on and strong-armed me into trying it. She can be quite convincing, that R. I hated the satin panel and bow. R really liked it. My mom absolutely loved it.
Dress #5: Paloma Blanca 3900

This was the most comfortable dress ever. I could have worn it all day. (And I really never thought I’d be saying that about a wedding dress.) R liked it too. My mom was still holding out for a little more sparkle.
So, I was left with one dress I loved, one dress my mom loved, and a whole lot of second guessing going on in my head.
I figured I’d get over my desire to buy a dress as quickly as possible, we’d continue the search, and we’d end up finding something we both liked.
And then my sister went into labor five weeks early…
Were you looking forward to trying on dresses? Or did you drag your feet like I did?
