About Mrs. Beagle

Decisions, Decisions…

August 18th, 2009 @ 2:38 pm by Mrs. Beagle

On Friday, I have my hair and makeup trial and I’m still indecisive on what I want the stylist to do. I’m stuck between two styles:

Low updo:

Or down:

Overall, I want a romantic style with loose curls. My only dilemma is whether or not I should wear my hair up. I always wear my hair up… which is why I would like something a little different for our wedding. I’m also thinking that a low bun might look a little off with the placement of my veil. However, I’m concerned that if it’s down, the curls will fall, or it will be too hot.

My veil will sit kind of like this:

11

I’m only wearing the veil for the ceremony, so I would also like a style that is versatile enough to add a flower or headband to during the reception. I’m *hoping* that the stylist will be flexible enough to try two different styles during the trial, but I’m not sure if they usually do that or not.

As far as make-up goes… I don’t usually wear any and if I do, it’s minimal (like powder or blush). So I think I’ll just ask her to do a very natural, minimized look and to make me look less pale than I normally do sans makeup.

What do you think? Any suggestions before I head to the trial?

My hair tends to look kinda “meh” after awhile if it’s just down. And I knew I’d be way to hot unless it was up! Plus, my hair cannot hold a curl at all, so those gorgeous down hairstyles wouldn’t have worked with me. How is your hair’s temperament?

If you usually wear your hair up, it might make sense to just do a “fancier” updo for the wedding, so you look like YOU!

i love the low buns! for a summer wedding (or october in Texas) i thought it would be way too hot to have my hair down. and i usually wear my hair up… so i think i’ll probably go for an up-do… i bet your stylist would definitely try both out for you!

i love the fifth one down with the pink flower and the bump. I vote low updo! (would that be a low-do?)

This was my dilemma, too! I went back and forth between doing just loose curls and pinning them up into a loose up-do. Ultimately, I decided to go with the up-do because I felt like it had more staying power. I was afraid my hair would frizz out or (worse yet) bother me all day long being down. I’m glad I went with the up-do, it worked and looked pretty.

I am thinking of doing both- you should consider it. You could do a low bun-updo for the ceremony while you wear your veil and then take the veil off and let your hair down for reception.

I had this same hair dilemma. Ultimately I chose the soft curls half up/half down look. I’m not sure how much the weather plays a part but my hairstylist says she puts tons of hairspray and hair powder among other products to ensure the style stays put all day. She was able to make my curls and bangs stay in place while still keeping everything soft and natural looking. Ask her opinion on the up or down look; she might know what looks better with your face shape. As for make-up, a good make up artist will make you look like a polished, cleaned up version of yourself. But be warned, you DO need to kind of go heavier on the make up otherwise it won’t show up in the photos. Everyday make up probably won’t cut it. My friend wiped off a good amount of her professional make up and she ended up looking washed out in her photos. Good luck tomorrow at your trial - and bring your veil along to test things out!

I really love the low updo photos you posted. I’m partial to having hair up for the wedding, but that is probably because my hair is thin and flat so I don’t think it would look all that great down. I think lots of brides have looked really beautiful with their hair down. I guess it just depends on what kind of styles normally work for you

i love those updos you’ve posted, it’s exactly what i’m thinking for my own wedding. that bias aside, as moh i wore my hair half down for my friend’s wedding and regretted how hot it was, especially while dancing.

They are both beautiful. You want to feel comfortable on your wedding day so if you usually wear your hair up will you feel unatural with it down? Will you be worried about the curls falling? The trial may also be a time to ease your mind about the “down” style. You can have your stylist fix it and spray it as he/she would on the big day and see how it holds up. And see if you are thinking about it drooping for the next 6 hours.

I did what Charm Bracelet recommended above. My hair is long, thick but very fine, and slightly wavy. My stylist put my hair in loose curls and pulled some of the front pieces back so we had somewhere to put the veil. Then he grabbed curls with hair pins (not bobby pins)–lots of hair pins!–until I had a pile of loosely gathered curls at the base of my neck. My hair was up with a veil for pictures and the ceremony. While we were waiting for the wedding party to be announced at the reception my bridesmaids took off my veil and just grabbed the hair pins. It took maybe a minute and my hair was down for the rest of the evening and looked great. This was perfect for me because I knew I would be warm during the pictures outside and that my curls would fall out.

Wear it down! It will be soo lovely looking back at the pictures of you with long hair and I am sure the Mr. will absolutely love it, especially when you never wear it down. If you are concerned about it being in your face, have your stylist pink the very front back, not a full have up have down just a bit back.

I love some of the updos. And since you do usually wear your hair up - at least the wedding photos wouldn’t look foreign … and like you said, the danger of curls falling and extreme heat is sometimes (in my opinion) too much to risk on your wedding day! I’m sure your stylist will be able to figure out something that will work out just right for you!

I love the down look. Its how I wore my hair and my husband said the way it moved in the breeze was beautiful and romantic. (yeah - HE said that!) That being said, its really a person to person thing. Tell your hairdresser you are considering both. She will probably curl your hair and pin it up into the low bun, see what you think, and then let it down and see how that works for you. Dont over think this one - when you’ve worn them both, go with whichever one you feel beautiful “you” in.

I’m having this dilema as well…although our wedding is in November I’m going with half up half down with the soft curls. I generally wear my hair up as well, so I’m meeting halfway in the middle! Good luck!

I like the idea of wearing it up. Of the updos, I like the second picture and I like the shot of Scotterdoodle.

I think you’ll look great. Also choose what YOU like when you have your trial.

If you think your hair is one of your assets, wear it down. I love the loose curls in the down-do if your hair can handle it.

I know personally, my hair has a mind of it’s own and I don’t want to have to worry about curls falling out or my hair sticking every which way on my wedding day. I went with mine totally up because it’s “me” with some extra oomph.

My hair looks pretty dreadful after a few hours if it’s down. So personally, I didn’t have a choice. Can you have your stylist try both options??

I am having the same debate with myself on this! I am leaning towards half down though. If it doesn’t look perfect halfway through the reception, I don’t think it will matter at that point…but I am going to see how my hair holds up after my trial.

Did you ask the Mr. what he prefers?

why don’t you try a low loose updo for the ceremony that can be taken out into curls for the reception?

My vote is for the low updo…unless of course you have awesome hair and it can hold the curl ALL day and night… I know I definitely don’t =]

My dilemma was exactly the same thing! :)

I ended up having my hair down on my wedding because I wasn’t really comfortable with the way i look when my hair is up. Yes, it didn’t hold the curl ALL day and night (at least until half the reception! :)) but I don’t regret my decision at all.

I say you should go with whatever you feel comfortable. When I did my trial I asked the stylist to do BOTH style: the low updo and the half-up half-down. If possible, you should ask your stylist to do that, take a lot of pictures, compare and then decide which one you like best :)

I love the half up half down look of the last pic! Personally I’m getting a bit tired of seeing all the updos. I like variety! If you have long hair, why not try something different?

I remember in one wedding mag recently, there was a low updo that a bride wore and for the reception (this was coordinated with her hair stylist before btw) three or four strategically placed bobby pins were removed and voila! She had that almost exact down (half up and down) look going for the reception (sans veil)!

I’d almost give that a try for variety sake and to be different! That may be something I try!

I was on the fence about doing an updo or wearing it all down, too. I went with the latter, and the curls actually lasted throughout the day and night (thanks to a curling iron and tons of hairspray). It looked sorta messy at the end after shakin’ my booty all night. Another thing that kinda got annoying were the flyaways. In our family portraits outside, I have flyaways sticking straight up.

For you, I say do both! My bridesmaid wore a loose updo for the ceremony, and wore it down for the reception. I loved the two looks. Either way, you’ll look beeeeautiful!

I’m going to be wearing my hair down — mostly because, like you, I never wear it down. =) A loose style would totally be versatile enough, but you run the risk of the curls losing their oomph, and tangles, and getting really hot. Maybe at your trial, have the stylist do your hair down, and then gather it at the back of your head, and you can decide what looks best on you?
