I know what you’re thinking. This is just a blog; it isn’t a confessional.
No worries. I’ve been soap opera free for, oh, two years now. I don’t need a 12-step program at the moment. (Well, at least not for soap operas…)
But back when I was a 10-year-old soap opera addict, I made a very resolute decision about my wedding. I decided that I wanted to walk down the aisle to Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring. That was what they played at Steve and Kayla’s wedding on Days of Our Lives, and after replaying it on the VCR 563 or so times, I was hooked.

Oh, the clothing horror of an ’80s wedding… (Source)
But despite that very resolute nature of my decision, 21 years later, when it actually came time to pick out our ceremony music, I pushed the thought aside. If I stuck with what my 10-year-old self wanted, I would probably end up with long puffy sleeves on my wedding dress.
Instead, I thought about using some sort of instrumental Indian music for the processional. Then I thought that would sound weird. Who plays instrumental Indian music when walking down the aisle?? Besides, nothing had quite the right beat.
So I did what any other indecisive bride would do–a complete 360. I convinced myself that I really wanted to walk down the aisle to the song Today by Joshua Radin. But Mr. DD wasn’t convinced. Maybe he just didn’t like the song? So, I switched my musical loyalty over to The Luckiest by Ben Folds. Mr. DD still wasn’t convinced. It seemed that he just wasn’t a fan of music with words for the ceremony. And maybe those songs were too new? They didn’t quite have the timeless quality I was looking for.
So I did another 360. (Yes, that’s me, forever going around in circles…) I decided that I really, really wanted to use Canon in D. Then I remembered my sister used it for her wedding, and, well, like any completely rational little sister, I decided that I must have my own ceremony music. I may have stomped my foot a couple of times for tantrum-y good measure.
What now? I needed a song to walk down the aisle to (and fast–that wedding is coming up quickly!). And then it occurred to me that I’d had my processional song all along. 21 years after hearing it, I still really liked Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring. Why not use it?
Who knew that soap opera addiction could be a good thing?
By the way, since Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring clearly won’t be the only ceremony music we’ll be using, here’s the rest of it: The moms will be seated to a guitar instrumental of Can’t Help Falling in Love (by Elvis), the bridesmaids will walk to a guitar instrumental of In My Life (by the Beatles), and then I’ll come down the aisle to (you guessed it) a guitar version of Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring. Our recessional will be A Beautiful Day by U2. Not too traditional—or maybe just traditional enough.
Did you make any childhood wedding plans? Are you going to use any of them in your actual wedding?
