Playlists, Playlists

August 18th, 2009 @ 11:08 am by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

While we’ve hired a bluegrass band to play for three hours of our reception (more on that soon) and we also have a friend who’s going to strum his guitar during our cocktail hour, there are a few interim hours during which we’ll need to keep our guests musically entertained. For instance, if our friend gets tired, we’ll need a cocktail hour playlist. We need a dinner playlist, a playlist for when the brand takes their 10-minute breaks, and some dance music for post-band antics.

I’ve also padded either end of our playlists with more music than we need just in case our ceremony is shorter than we think or some other party-foul occurs.

Here’s what we’ve come up with so far:

Cocktail Hour (1.5 hours of music)

Total Time: 57:03

Dinner (2 hours of music)

Total: 53:01

Band Breaks (45 minutes of music)

Total: 38:42

Dance Party (1.5 minutes of music)

Total: 1:03:42

As you can see, I’m short on music in quite a few places. Our cocktail hour is quite the smattering of music right now and could use a little pick-me-up, if you ask me. What type of music do you think should be played at a cocktail hour? Song requests?

Dinner feels pretty smooth, but we could use a few more oldies but goodies.

While the band takes breaks, I’d like to keep the music in the bluegrass/country genre just so we don’t go from a bluegrass band to Jay-Z. Any suggestions for easy-listening, maybe some dancing country or bluegrass?

Our dance party could also use some stellar tunes. What makes you move?

I think John Mayer would be a nice addition to cocktails or dinner. I’m a big fan of Paradise By The Dashboard Light (the long Meatloaf song) for weadding dancing but I know that does not interest everyone.

Here are a few suggestions for band breaks. I don’t think you could go wrong with throwing in a few more Ray songs (but I’m incredibly partial) such as “Winter Birds” or “Gossip in the Grain”.

Try Rosie Golan - “Think of Me”, “Hazy” (with William Fitzsimmons)

Joshua Radin - “I’d Rather Be with You” (great one!), “Sky”

Allie Moss - “Something to Hold On To”

I could go on & on…

For cocktail hour, I woud suggest..
We Are Going To Be Friends - The White Stripes (Jack Johnson does a version as well)

Every Little Thing She Does - The Police (could also be an option during dinner)

The Way I Am - Ingrid Michaelson

Lullaby - Dickie Chicks (good option for dinner)

Young Folks - Peter Bjorn
For Dancing..:
Anything Lady Gaga would work.

My Life Would Suck Without You - Kelly Clarkson

(I would also check on Amazon on the “Now” discs, see what songs you like. They usually have a pretty upbeat pace to those discs.)

I would add some Magnetic Fields to the band breaks–maybe “The Book of Love” or “Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing.”

Other suggestions for your night: “Oh, It is Love” by Hellogoodbye; “If Everything Fell Quiet” by Reindeer Section; “Music of You” by Jim’s Big Ego; “I’m the Man Who Loves You” or “On and On and On” by Wilco.

Love the lists so far!

I’m a HUGE David Gray fan (just posted about him in my blog), I think his music would be perfect for either your cocktail hour or during dinner.

@Mrs. Quiche: Love Rosi Golan! Just saw her perform with Julian Velard last week, and my hubby and I are hooked. We love “I Don’t Wanna Wait.”

I second Quiche’s suggestion of Joshua Radin -also check out James Morrison and Tony Lucca. Perfect cocktail and dinner music. For dance tunes, Lady Gaga and the Black-Eyed Peas got our crowd moving!

Since you know what kind of style/genre you’re going to, have you thought about creating Pandora stations for them? I always find new songs/artists I like from that site. (pandora.com)

We havent started working on our “must play” and “must not play” lists, but throw some Magnetic Fields into the cocktail/ dinner hour music! They are great, in my opinion!

Since you have a bit of a bluegrass theme, have you heard of Pickin On Modest Mouse ? I actually think their version of “Ocean breathes salty” is better than the original :)

When I looked up the album on Amazon, I noticed there was a bluegrass tribute to the Shins. So many possibilities…

I *love* you song selections! I think our music tastes are very similar.

I’ve put together a playlist of our wedding music; you might find some ideas?

I would suggest maybe some Cat Power or Adele since they have the loveliest voices, also Simon and Garfunkel are amazing. With more of a bluegrass theme perhaps Alison Krauss with Union Station.

Great choices. Definitely great choices!

I would definitely recommend Michael Franti and Spearhead’s “Say Hey (I Love You)” for dancing. I just. Can’t. Stop. Listening. Haha.

Also let me get back to you about cocktail music. I heard a really really great band yesterday that I just can’t think of the name of … and they’re great!

Dance Party - 1.5 HOURS?

Anything Black Eyed Peas has a pretty good beat and should get people moving. Something slower - The Luckiest by Ben Folds?
