About Mrs. Swan

A Little Detail

August 19th, 2009 @ 4:10 pm by Mrs. Swan

Okay, it’s actually a major one: my dress!

I decided not to blog about my dress before the wedding because I never know when Mr. Swan is lurking around here. :)

Since I’ve already shown you some of the other dresses I’ve tried on, I’ll just cut to the chase.

Here it is:

As you can see, it’s a mermaid style dress with a train and a little asymmetrical twist, aka David’s Bridal ML9521. Part of me wished it didn’t have the train, but it did make for a pretty cool bustle. My lovely seamstress, Ann Hamilton, and I ended up calling my bustle a “Super French” bustle since it looked like some pretty French dessert by the time she finished creating it.

Of course, I also didn’t want my dress to have any beading either, but there was some beading on the neckline and on the left hand side at the hip.

I don’t know what it was, but shopping for dresses in my price range often led me to dresses with beading when I was trying desperately to get away from them. Hmm… conspiracy, maybe? :)

In the end I really didn’t like the wedding dress shopping process for a variety of reasons which I’ll perhaps talk about. I even had doubts about my dress. A train and beading during the day? It seemed like a lot to me, and it was definitely not what I envisioned. I even thought about whether I should have gotten another dress, but I couldn’t justify spending anymore money.

Speaking of money, I am glad that I stayed the course with my dress because, well, it was a very cost conscious choice. We came slightly under budget with our wedding, and I believe (actually, I KNOW) that having a less expensive dress really helped. I’m not gonna front though… I really wished I could have had a beautiful Jim Hjelm or any other designer dress. I have definitely drooled over some of the dresses I’ve seen here on Weddingbee from both bees and readers. In the end though, my dress accomplished what I wanted it to: I felt pretty. :) I guess that’s all I could have asked for.

you look beautiful and the dress is gorgeous! you totally OWN that dress!! due to a horrific bridesmaid dress shopping experience (2 years ago!), i am apprehensive about going shopping for my dress. i really don’t believe that you have to pay tons of $ to look beautiful. i’ve had friends and family get married in 200.00 and 20,000.00 dresses, and they all looked beautiful!

You look beautiful, and your bustle is SUPER awesome! Would you recommend you seamstress? My dress is going to need a hard core bustle, and I am hesitant to bring it back to David’s Bridal…

I agree with you completely. My dream dress would have been Jim Hjelm or Rivini, but I don’t have Jim Hjelm or Rivini money! You looked gorgeous.

Beautiful! I just ordered a dress with beading and a train for a daytime wedding too, and while I had reservations, it made me feel beautiful, and that’s the important thing!

I’ve had second thoughts about my dress too, but in the end the dress doesn’t matter as much as the fact that you are married. :)

AND almost as important, you totally rocked your dress. You looked absolutely gorgeous in it.

Honey, it’s all in the silhouette, not the label. And you rocked (as Lovesthebear said) that dress. It fit you like a glove, your bussle was delicious, and you were a beautiful, sexay bride! It all worked.

preeettty, love the bustle!
Mrs Swan, i’d love to know if you liked your seamstress and if she was more cost effective than DB’s alterations? (if you don’t mind me asking)
I’m getting a DB dress too and I’m not yet sure where to get the alterations done. Thanks!

You looked beautiful! I love the back - with the beading and the super french bustle! Gorgeous! AND you scored for WAY less than a designer gown would have cost. Go you!

That dress looks gorgeous, and does in your wedding photos we’ve seen too. I can really appreciate rocking a budget dress, it’s totally worth it! (Not knowing your budget, but my “budget” dress is still the most expensive thing in my closet!)

I love it on you…you look beautiful and you look stunning in your wedding day pictures. Mine has beading and lace…and its a day wedding! But I love beading and lace! Its a beautiful dress and what you did was right for you. I keep looking at other dresses too and think, “Maybe I should have gotten something like that or maybe that!” But in the end my dress is mine and no one can beat that! Congrats Mrs. Swan you look awesome!

Your dress looks wonderful! I think lots of brides second-guess their dresses, there are just so many amazing options to chose from. But, for those of us that have budgets (like yourself), I think your dress is gorgeous, it fit you wonderfully, and seems to have caught your heart in some way since you did purchase it!

I LOVE your dress bustled! It really is super pretty. I’m glad you were happy with it. But I get the feeling. If I had had more money I would have loved to get a designer dress…but it just wasn’t in the cards for me.

Actually I think the dress is beautiful, and from the looks of it, it doesn’t look like the beading will be very noticeable. It’s more subtle than other beaded dresses! I love the mermaid style of the back of the dress, much more beautiful than the long train previously. I’m in the process now of looking a dresses, and I’m a little picky with what I want. Hopefully I’ll be able to find a dress in my price range that I will be happy with. Also, more good news…I found the perfect live Chicago Wedding Band to play at the reception. I was a little skeptical about have a live band at first, but after listening to them I thought they were absolutely perfect and will create such a fun environment after the ceremony.
