About Mrs. Mary Jane

…Is anyone else trying to resist using this excuse to spend money on stuff they don’t need?

For me, the obsession of late has been cake toppers. If you recall, a friend of my FMIL’s is making our cake and we don’t even really know what it’s going to look like. We don’t really care, either, as long as it tastes good. It isn’t going to be a big cake either: probably just one tier, to feed 9 people. (The picnic will have cake or dessert also, but that’s still TBD.)

I decided several weeks ago that a cake topper wasn’t necessary. Frosting decorations will be fine, thank-you-very-much. They taste a lot better than porcelain or plastic, anyway.

But what did I spend a good portion of yesterday evening doing? Looking at cake toppers on the internet.

I’m not a fan of monograms: they look beautiful and are perfect for others, but just not for me. Maybe I’m just slow, but I always had trouble figuring out whose monogram it was or what it stood for. A big “H” for “Hislast” would completely ignore the bride’s family’s involvement, in my opinion. And those three-letter designs with the couple’s first initials flanking the big “H”? I tend to focus on those when I see ’em, trying to determine what kind of inappropriate phrases could be made from the acronym. (Yes, I’m a 13-year-old boy at heart.)

And as far as Ann Wood Birds or other sculpted/hand-made options?  They’re just not my style, cute though they are.

I just love the classic porcelain human bride-and-groom. (But I’m not on board with the custom “your face on this topper” options.)

(All of the toppers below are courtesy of weddingcollectibles.com.)

A topper like this would be fitting: we’re sort of car people. If it was a different kind of car (maybe a Honda like mine, or a VW bug like I had in high school & college?!) I’d be sold.

Now how about either of these next two? Mr. Mary Jane and I like ’em a lot: they play tribute to our passionate and somewhat-whirlwindy romance. We don’t need our mothers to gasp though, or our fathers to blush. So we’ll skip these.

I do think it’s a little odd that the bride is smacking herself in the head with the bouquet in this one…

Then there’s this next one. Looks like a “normal” topper from the front, but from the back, what’s this? She’s pinching his butt! Love it. LOVE IT.

I saw tons of toppers depicting brides dragging grooms to the altar, but neither Mr. MJ or I think that’s very tasteful. Perhaps it’s a running joke for some couples, but we don’t want to give off a vibe that one of us is forcing the other in to making vows.

Gotta admit though, this one, which lets everyone know “who wears the pants”, is pretty cute.

And finally, some that are “decent”.

I really love the fact that this couple is wearing blue jeans. There were several poses and skin colors/hair colors of these. Though I won’t be wearing jeans on our wedding day, our wedding and picnic will be pretty casual. If it wasn’t for the sandy base on the topper, I’d really be loving this one (even though it’s a little weird to me that the couple doesn’t have faces).

But this one takes the cake. Er, goes on the cake. It was kind of hard to find any toppers with a short-dress bride, but the tea length dress on this figurine does the trick. It’s such a romantic little pose, too. This is the one I would get. If I were getting a topper.

Which I was not going to. But now, I am. I wrote this post last night, and then FMIL and FFIL came to visit! I’ve got new developments on the cake front, up next!

What kind of topper will you have? And, does anyone have any other good short-dress bride topper suggestions for me? Bonus points if you can find one featuring a photographer bride and groom. I’d like to keep the cost under $30 if possible, and I need to order it ASAP (as in, tomorrow).

When I saw the “who wears the pants” topper, my first thought was that it’d be perfect for you because of the bride’s shorter dress. Looking forward to hearing more!

We’ve got the butt pincher! I’m guilty of doing it every once in a while :-) When we saw the cake topper we decided we needed to have it.

i don’t have any helpful suggestions for you [sorry!] but i like that last one. i think it fits your style of wedding. at least, what i think is your style.

i’m thinking of having korean wedding dolls as our topper. but i can just as easily go sans topper too. or maybe peguins.

OMG. I want the ass-pinching one. No, I don’t have a cake, but I could find some use for it, right?

That last one is so cute!
I’m with you - whatever expenses we don’t need to pay for, let’s not pay for. Why spend so much money on “I must have it - it’s for the wedding”? When else in life do we give ourselves a BLANK CHECK?? craziness, I tell you.
I’m really glad there are brides like you with their head on straight :)
Sorry I don’t have any suggestions… Was the last cake topper to pricey? You could get an ornament from hallmark or something, and use that as the topper. We’re going to use our cake topper as a xmas ornament anyways after the wedding ;)

My fi hasn’t requested much for the wedding, pretty much he just wanted it on the beach and to have a “people” cake topper. I like that they are traditional. Although I love the fun options you showed.

I love the last one! Our save-the-dates are that pose.
I love the car and the one with the people in jeans… I haven’t seen either before but they are fun!

I like the last one - though the one with jeans appeals too.

Well, I found out today that my uncle has discovered my Nana’s cake topper from her wedding at home. My Nana married my grandfather in the 1930’s (I think - my Dad was born in 1935 so I am guessing slightly).

goodness knows what it looks like, or what state it’s in - hope it isn’t too awful! I have in mind getting goosegrease figures made. Luckily, I think we will have two cakes - one made of cheese, one of cake.

We are having a traditional swedish style cake that has a rose on top so I am kinda sad that it doesnt make room for a topper but I am trying to get one in one way or another!!

If you find one with a VW bug let me know! My fiance has a 73 bug, and its like his “thing” everyone knows about him, so I’d LOVE to get a wedding topper like that w/ a bug for him.
email is alohababy28@yahoo.com

Thanks! I’m totally with you on not wanting a traditional topper, we’re trying to do a unique take on traditional wedding stuff. Not our style.

I really love the blue jeans couple!

I’m not sure but we will probably use a figurine from my Willow Tree collection called “Promise”. (They’re also faceless…)

I thought this Precious Moments figurine was cute, but I see you’re leaning toward more realistic and mature figures…

What fun ones you found! We are not having one either… don’t need it! (Less to pack anyway!) These were great though, thanks for sharing. I like the 2nd one the best!

What a great post! We’ve had trouble finding a topper we liked and had to decided to just go with flowers. But this post has revitalized my fondness for toppers! Love, love, love the car, bride pinching, and short dress kissing bride toppers!
