‘Meeting’ Our Photographer

August 20th, 2009 @ 5:55 pm by Mrs. Sunbeam

Tonight Mr. SB and I will have a virtual meet up with our photographer. I thought it would be best to meet and greet before the wedding day, because I already expect to feel awkward in front of the camera, let alone in front of a would-be total stranger. I also had a few things to share that I felt the need to share with him. I hope it wasn’t TMI. Here’s what I sent him yesterday, so we can talk about it during our meeting.

Inspirational photos: Though I do have a folder stashed full of poses for Mr. SB and I to keep in mind, the purpose of the photos I shared with our photographer was to show him the sort of tones and feel we liked (mostly useful during editing). I was sure to tell him these were not poses we wanted to recreate, because I know that is a no-no.

I am also trying to work out a day-of timeline. So, I sent along a spreadsheet, and a Google map of the locations where we hope to shoot.

I have a crazy idea to make a little (I mean tiny) booklet of pictures of important family members to give to his assistant on the day of just as an FYI (only key people that he wouldn’t know about otherwise, like grandparents, parents—not the bridal party, which would be glaringly and obviously important).

Do you think there’s anything else I should have ready for our photographer at this point? Did you have a meet up before hand with your photographer? What sort of things did you discuss?

Ooh, that’s a really good idea to give him info on your key family members. I would definitely be disappointed if there weren’t any pics of my favorite aunt, cousin, etc.

A list of all the little details that you don’t want to miss. OR just tell him to snap the bejesus out of all the little things.

OMG! I was in your town (Grove City) this weekend!!! My fiance’s family is from Franklin and I wanted to see the area (as in not the freeway) so he drove me up through there on our way in from Pittsburgh Airport. How funny! :)

Make sure to let him know what makes you comfortable and what doesn’t. Just like people have a “do not play” list for songs, I think they should have a “do not take a picture of this” for their photographer. If it is that you are self conscious about your size 10 feet or if you’re uncomfortable with him there when your dad sees you for the first time - let him know now!

I have done a of the same planning in terms of timeline and hope to discuss with my photographer next month after I have all my inspiration photo boards ready to send! (there are only 2 or 3) I think the vip booklets are great!

Yup, we shared location ideas and inspiration pictures. She’s also requested lists of the bridal party, family and anyone else we want to be sure to include in formal pictures.

My mom asks her brides for a “Top 10″ list of most important photos to them. This is NOT a list of the formals they want (you should make a list of that too, because it’s much easier for the photographer if they can just call out people to come jump in the photo as they go), but photos like “my bouquet”, or “our rings”, or “me with my favorite grandma”, or “my dad busting a move on the dance floor”. It can be hard to narrow it down to 10, but then you won’t walk away disappointed after it’s all over!

Oh, and have the photog get a picture of your parents alone. My parents were so bummed that they didn’t have one of the two of them together that day!

That is a great idea about the key family members. Our photographers know us and they know my family but they dont know Mister’s family yet…but they will be in the formal photos so hopefully they will remember them throughout the day to take more pics of them! My MOH had a day of timeline for all of us when I was her bridesmaid…like when we would get our hair done, get to the site to do pics, ceremony time, reception time, etc. But I dont know if I want to do a time line…I dont want to have to be worried about looking at some paper through out the day and say ok now we should be doing this and now we should be here…i just want it all to happen and go with the flow!

PS…however our wedding, photos, is all at one place! So it might be easier with getting away with no timeline!

you should. unexpected pre-wedding drama hijacked all of our plans and while i had a list of ‘must have’ shots/portraits, it sat in my computer, and i never printed it.

now, i look back full of regret because i don’t have pictures with/of some of the most impt people in my life.

The more information you can give your wedding photographer before the day the better. You should not need to ask to have certain details photographed though, because if you have hired the right team of photographers they will shoot everything anyway.
The more planning you do with your photographer before the day, the better your final wedding album will be.

I like the booklet idea. I never would have though about that, and I definately wouldn’t want certain people left out of candids.

We actually did a little cheat sheet for our photographer and officiant with photos and names of our closest family and friends. That way, they knew who was closest to us. I think it helped, because we got some great photos.

Great to see your organization and preparation. I think it is very important to create a time line and give a list of family members to your photographer. Also giving the photographer some ideas on what tones you like in your photos is super helpful. It helps give a good place to start for your photographer.

Kudos!
