Mrs. Lightning's Picture
Mrs. Lightning, Cape Town Age and Occupation: 22, Journalist and Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Computer Scientist Engagement Date: December 27, 2008 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: Hout Bay Manor About Me: I'm a young American living abroad in the beautiful city of Cape Town with a wonderful South African fiance and our crazy kitty Zeus. We're young, driven and madly in love. Together we're pursuing our wildest dreams including our biggest undertaking yet, a vintage retrospective wedding filled to the brim with DIY madness. I have an unnatural attraction to cake, a passion for blogging and a love of good design. While I might be an overly obsessive creative with too many ideas and nowhere to put them, Mr Lightning is my biggest fan and I can't wait to make my true love mine.
About Mrs. Lightning

Source

During my dress fitting a little while ago, I indulged Mama Lightning by trying on a traditional white veil. However, looking back on those pictures I can’t help but feel that I was overpowered by it. My dress is so unique that I sort of feel that a traditional white veil actually hides its silver beauty. And so, I have decided to either look for something else, or go sans veil.

My headpiece is lovely on its own, but I really would like to try to make something complementary to my dress to wear during the ceremony. It is, after all, the one and only time I’m likely to wear a veil. I started looking for a vintage birdcage veil, but have yet to find one… and so I am considering two other options:

  1. A DIY bandeau veil in soft gray tulle
  2. Or a DIY shoulder length veil with soft gray tulle

Apparently, gray veils like the one above are not very popular or easy to come by, which is why I intend to make my own. The idea of wearing a gray veil really excites me. I think it’s because it will complete the gray/silver look I’m going for, instead of competing with it in the name of looking bridal.

Are you planning to or have you ever seen a bride wearing a veil in a color other than white?

Oooo, would you consider a bird cage in a silvery color? I think that would look awesome with your gown! :-)

I think a birdcage in a silvery netting would be FAB. And mine really wasn’t that hard to make. Miss Lightning is so appropriate with your dress! :)

Haha, sorry, skipped over the one sentence where you wrote you’re considering the option I suggested! Oops!

The silver birdcage would add a fun vintage twist, just like your wedding! So glad you’re going with something non-traditional that complements your dress!

Could you DIY to dye it the color you want?

I think a birdcage veil in silver or grey would look beautiful on its own, but I’m not sure about with your headpiece. I love the idea of a soft grey shoulder length tulle veil - soft and cloud like - with the headpiece.

I think that a gray tulle veil would be awesome for the ceremony. Maybe you could wear a super chic silver birdcage veil for some of your photos.

While I’ve never seen a bride wearing a color other than white or the off-whites, I love the silver/gray look! It is just so beautiful! Good luck on all!

I’ve never seen a bride in anything but white either, so I think the silver would look fantastic!

You know, in looking at your photos with your dress, I think I agree that the traditional white veil takes away from your silver dress just a little. The dress is so stunning, you want to accentuate that as much as possible. I think a grey/silver birdcage would look gorgeous with your headpiece and dress.

Love the idea of a silver veil! I’m undecided on wearing a veil, but agree — it’s the only time you ever have cause to, so why not have a little fun with it?

Ooo, beautiful! I’m so excited about your wedding!

My veil was DIY out of silver tulle, and it turned out fabulously! The silver gave my veil just that hint of shimmer in the sunlight. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I think the idea of a gray veil is awesome! I think the bandeau would be beautiful, but maybe too modern for your vintage-y dress? I dunno, I’d like to see some pictures, though!

I think I’ll be going the birdcage route, but that silve gray pictured looks fantastic.
