Mrs. Labrador's Picture
Mrs. Labrador Retriever, Athens/Savannah Age and Occupation: 24, Student/Sports Reporter Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Physical Therapy Assistant Student/Future Dr. of PT Engagement Date: December 31, 2008 Wedding Date: November 2009 Venue: Whitfield Square/Savannah Station About Me: I'm working on my second degree from UGA (Go Dawgs!). I'm a self-proclaimed attention-w****. If it involves a camera, I'm in front of it! You'll never meet a girlier tomboy than me. I can go toe to toe with any guy on the subject of college football, and lift more than any girl in my gym, all without chipping a nail. I hope to someday be the only person you want delivering your sports news. My FI and I are the loving parents of three Labrador Retrievers (one of each color) and are planning a "Southern Romantic Charm" wedding in the beautiful, historic city of Savannah. About Mrs. Labrador

I’ve slowly been collecting supplies for our OOT welcome bags the last few weeks. Although they’re not finished, I wanted to share my plans for them!

I’m using brown bags and found this adorable package presentation that I thought looked very “Southern”. If you haven’t figured it out by now, this entire wedding will scream “the South” to our guests.

Source

If I can’t find cheap doilies, I might just use some lace ribbon as an accent. I’m also putting little tags on the outside that will say something like “Welcome to Savannah!”, “Thanks for being our guests!”, etc.

Moving on to the insides of our bags…

First up, maps! I nearly cleared out the visitors’ center of maps and brochures, all for free! I’m also going to include contact numbers, an itinerary of the wedding events, my suggested places to go/see, and maybe even a homemade map ala Mrs. Ballet Flat (IF I find the time and patience). Many of the maps and brochures also have coupons included, so hopefully our guests can save some money while seeing Savannah!

Source

Next up, salt water taffy! Yum. Savannah is on the coast, so the candy is a little nod to that. There are some pretty popular places that carry the gooey goodness in the area, so I wanted our guests to have a few pieces to “chew” over. Har har.

Source

Okay, I’m starting to make myself hungry… and the next item doesn’t help my case: pecan pralines! I thought about peanuts at first, but decided that more people have tried peanuts than pralines. Man, I wanna nom nom nom on this picture.

Source

Next up is a no-brainer. Savannah is the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, aka the founder of the Girl Scouts. So, of course, we’ve gotta include these famous cookies:

Source

Unfortunately, the cookies are not in “season”. Thankfully, there are plenty of places on the interwebs that provide them in fresh, unopened boxes! Mmmm. There’s even a version that says “Thank You” on them! But my all-time faves are the thin mints. What are yours?

Finally, I wanted to include a “relaxer” of sorts to help our guests unwind from hours on the road. So perhaps they could pour one of these minis into their vending machine Coke? I know Southern Comfort isn’t native to Savannah (or Georgia for that matter), but I just couldn’t resist the “Southern” part of it. We Southerners love our “SoCo”! ;)

Source

So that’s the gist of our OOT welcome bags! Have I blatantly forgotten anything that screams the South or Savannah?

I’m a girl scout troop leader, and believe me, I miss those cookies when they are out of season! I was on vacation the other weekend and a girl scouts council had accidentally overstocked their supply. So they were selling all of their cookies at half-price. I’m munching on thin mints now! : )

Nice selections for the OOT bag! I’m with Hayley, I think a coke bottle would be a nice addition.

As for my all-time fave… samoas for sure.

Oh WOW! Can I be a guest at your wedding just to get one of the OOT bags? ;-)

In all seriousness, I LOVE what Haley and Mrs. Piglet suggested - coke bottles - but in the classic glass bottle!

My FH and I enjoyed a great vacay in Savannah and our favorite activity was walking around the old squares looking at the houses. Most of the touristy shops have postcards of the more famous homes. Maybe you could put magnets on the back of these so your guests could put them on their fridges to remind them of the southern charm, oh, and your wedding too ;)

“Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” was also based in Savannah, and I’ve heard the “Midnight in the Garden” tour is pretty good. You could include brochures for this tour, or the ever popular ghost tours.

Sometimes you can find great deals on doilies at flea markets and they just need a good cleaning. Just some where to keep your eyes open at. I love the feel of your bags though how they reflect the feel of your wedding is.

You could do paper doilies? They are VERY inexpensive at school supply websites, etc.

I didn’t know about the Girl Scout Cookie connection so I personally think that’s a great addition.

When I think of Savannah, I think of Forrest Gump and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

I used to find cheap paper doilies at Dollar Tree.

Are you using mini bottles of Southern Comfort? Trying to get a sense of how big your paper bags are.

Hooray for GS cookies! Don’t forget they freeze REALLY well. I always buy a bunch and then eat them all year long… or rather, I put them in the freezer and forget about them until it’s cookie time the next year and realize I still have them. Once I open them, the box will be gone in no time!

omigosh these are amazing! i love the doily. You could even get the look with the paper ones. Your OOT bags are to die for!

the gophers from Savannah Candy kitchen are the best. I’m here visiting DH in Sav and we *MUST* go there tomorrow or my visit wont’ be complete =]

Oh, you could include peach ice tea packets for your non-drinking guests!

@Hayley: I thought about the Coke! But I’m doing bottled Cokes at the ceremony, so I figured our guests would have $1 for the vending machines?

@ejs4y8: LOVE the peach ice tea packets idea! Since the hotels have coffee machines, they could just pop one in there! AND I’ll get the “Georgia peach” in the bag! ;)

Do you have a dollar tree store in your area? They sell the paper doilies there for a dollar (of course!) I forget how many come in a pack, but I use them on top of pound cake to make a “lace” design with powder sugar ;) They also sell fabric ones but they are not true lace and come maybe 2 to a pack.

@Andria: Totally Southern! And tasty! ;)

@Miss Mouse: Darn, forgot about the confederate flag! Perhaps the tiny ones on toothpick flag poles? lol

@Tammy: We’re having Paula Deen’s restaurant cater our reception! Definitely Southern! Plus, she’s from Mr. Lab’s hometown!

@Amber: Mmmm, I LOVE that stuff! I wonder if they sell them in minis? Hmm…

@klh12: We do have a dollar tree! I’m going to have to check them out now! Thanks for the heads up!

Love the SoCo! I would definitely include a listing of religious venues around town and the service times. It was included in the last OOT bag we received and my FI’s family thought it was great that they had options and directions for that Sunday morning. Although a lot of your guests might no be religious, its a nice gesture to those who are.

I live in Savannah and was married here earlier this year - we did the pralines, peach salt water taffy, hand fans (because it was last month in the hot summer), and had a trolley shuttle from hotels to church to reception. Guests loved it - I wish I had thought of the GS cookies and mini-bottles, and those bags are SO cute. Savannah is such a beautiful place to get married. The squares are such an amazing background, as are all the historic homes for photos. We did a carriage ride away from the church and I would absolutely recommend that if you want. It was a great time to be alone for awhile and have some champagne before the all-night-long reception!

Your OOT bags sound both yummy and southern thru and thru.

I’m not sure how pricey it would get, but if you could order cheap paperbacks of “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” that would be a little something-Savannah to add to the bags.

I second that, send me a bag! I love the Thin Mints and the Peanut butter sandwich cookie. Yum! In fact I usually buy extra boxes and freeze them so I can munch year round. Isn’t that sad?

I think the postcard idea is great, but that might be because we did it for our guests. I put a post-card with postage in each OOT bag and are hoping that each guest will mail the postcard to someone else (mom, kids, grandmother).

Miss Lab I am a troop leader try checking with local girl scout councils to see if they may still have stock left over. I know our council has a few kinds still left. It can’t hurt to try, since you will actually get them at the price they are sold for or even maybe a little bit less. I have some left sitting in my spare room although not the delish thin mints :)

Ooh, so I did something a little bit like this with doilies (stuck them in my RSVP envelopes) and I found some super cheap mini ones at Michaels. (Think it was $1.99 for 25 or something.) Anyway, it was terrible trying to glue them because the glue kept seeping through the little doily holes, so I decided to run them through the Xyron machine (bought one on Amazon for about $35) and voila: I had perfect sticky doilies that had no weird messy glue seeping through them. I just peeled off the sticky back and stuck them right on like regular stickers. Just thought that might help if you end up doing this!

@Gator: Hadn’t thought about the church information, but that’s a great idea. Definitely need to include that!

@SavBee: We are getting a horse-drawn carriage! I can’t wait to ride around in it! :D

@ggsb: Yeah, might get pricey. But we do have maps that show all the movies that have been filmed in Savannah!

@Nothing But Bonfires: This is such a great idea! Thanks!

@ColaJ: We’ll have peaches making an appearance in the ceremony refreshments and dessert after dinner! ;)

@FromTheHeart: Thanks for the tip!
