About Mrs. Bruschetta

Twisted Tiers

August 21st, 2009 @ 5:36 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

After we nixed the plan for plain cake with gourmet sauces — um, yeah, I’m going back to one of my posts from mid-May — I realized I was pretty jazzed about our new, traditional dessert. Why? Complimentary tastings!

One afternoon + two bakeries = a LOT of cake. (Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.) Mrs. Cupcake’s tasting had sounded delicious, so I made sure we stopped into Sweet Jazmines first. The second spot was yummy, but it focused on pound cake and fondant (rather than layer cake and buttercream) so in our opinions, it really didn’t compare.

We received a generous sample platter of just some of Sweet Jazmines flavors. (Thanks for taking — and labeling! — this picture, Mrs. Cupcake!)

Mr. Bruschetta immediately loved the “Lemon Delight” — lemon pound cake, lemon curd and lemon buttercream — but imagined adding a ribbon of raspberry marmalade to the party. And I gobbled up the “Cinnfully Southern”, which combines sweet potato cake, cinnamon cream cheese and caramel buttercream. Is it a little less summery and a bit more autumnal? Yeah, maybe. But it’s also insanely delectable. So, we’d quickly figured our bottom (his flavor pick) and middle (mine) tiers.

And for the top spot? We agreed our cake could use some antioxidants — or just some chocolately goodness — and opted for chocolate cake filled and finished with chocolate buttercream. How could we taste, and then walk away from the “Chocolate Decadence” flavor? By keeping our budget in mind! A few forkfuls confirmed it lives up to its name — chocolate cake and flourless chocolate cake with ganache, chocolate mousse and chocolate buttercream — but the increased price for these special ingredients made it easier to resist. (Sweet Jazmines will be gifting us a 6-inch first anniversary cake in the flavor of our choice, so we won’t feel badly about serving up the top tier on our wedding day.)

Seeing this cake…

…convinced me that square tiers — set ever so slightly askew — would be the perfect complement to the F.U.E.L. House’s stunning architecture. Somewhat traditional, with a modern twist, like our reception venue. I loved how it adds an unexpected quirk to an elegant confection — so I promptly set out to find more offset cake inspiration photos.

I wish I had more to share, but it’s pretty tough to find pictures of this style!

Will your wedding cake have circle tiers, square tiers… or another shape altogether?

We’re also doing lemon cake with raspberry filling! And our top layer is chocolate x3! I love the look of skewed tiers. We decided to do round because it fits with our design better, even though square feeds more people. Our cake actually looks a lot like Mrs. Cupcakes, even though we designed it months before I discovered WeddingBee!

I’ve seen a lot of really beautiful hexagonal cakes, and we thought about getting one, but with the added cost we decided to stick with round. Sigh. Square is my favorite, though, and I love the off-set tiers!

we actually just went cake tasting today! we already knew we wanted a round cake. we have decided for tier 1 to be lemon cake with raspberry mousse and tier 2 is almond cake with lemon mousse. tier 3 is our 1 year anniversary - lemon cake with strawberry mousse! we were lucky to have mousse as an option since we get married in the fall. beware of infused cakes…..just taste and enjoy!

I really like that cake in the 2nd pic how it looks with the bride and groom…and how yummy does your cake sound! YUMMO! We’re going with a circle cake. We tasted some at our venue and fell in love with the chocolate chip cake with espresso buttercream…so good!! I cant wait to have more of it!

I think we are going to have a three or four tiered square cake with very simplistic decorations. I want the tiers to alternate between white wedding cake and chocolate. I love both and just can’t choose just one!

We are having square tiers, then some columns and our topper, then a special top layer. we thought about the twisted squares, but just weren’t feeling it so went back to straight. Our tasting was great. The flavors were YUMMY and they use a fondant rolling machine, so it’s super thin, and the fondant is marshmallow fondant, so it’s not too noticeable (tastes good actually, not too sugary). When they brought out samples, they had baked a whole cake of each flavor - a six-inch cake for two of us… in each flavor = 3 six inch cakes. We ate it for a few days.

Mine’s going to be oval! I haven’t seen too many oval ones, so I’m hoping it’ll be pretty unique!

Those cake flavors sound delicious. My husband really wanted a square cake, but our baker (a family friend) already had round pans, so we made it work. I love the askew squares though!

We couldn’t decide on square or circle, so the largest bottom tier is square, then a circle, then a square, then another circle. We each got what we wanted as far as shape goes, and we had two flavors, so one flavor was square and one was in the circles! It seemed like a good compromise, so we’ll see how it turns out!
