Mrs. Poodle's Picture
Mrs. Poodle, Santiago, Chile/San Bernardino, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Industrial & Web Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Firefighter & Mountain Patrol Engagement Date: February 25, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2010 Venue: Mr. P's Grandparents’ Ranch About Me: I’m a Chilean girl who's crazy about nature and swimming. I enjoy carving, drawing, reading and sewing; I drool over computers, fabric, pretty paper, purple and patterns. To me, chocolate should be one of the seven wonders, right next to lemon pie. I never thought an exchange work experience program was going to change my life forever, but while working in California, I met Mr. Poodle, and ever since my days are better and brighter. We are two goofy souls that, after finding each other, couldn’t help but want to be together forever. It has being a long and sometimes hard road, since we have to deal with such a long distance between us, but we are now facing the last stage of our Fiancé Visa, and soon we will be together. You know the best part? We will be married! So I’ll be blogging from Chile until just a few months before our “green and purple” wedding.

A Garter Toss and a Tutorial

August 24th, 2009 @ 5:40 pm by Mrs. Poodle

I already gave you all a sneak peek at my DIY garter and promised to show the final product once I was done, remember? Well… I’m done! smile011 And I’m here to show it to you all.

A Garter Toss and a Tutorial : wedding accessories diy tutorial My Gart A Garter Toss and a Tutorial : wedding accessories diy tutorial My Gart01

{ Here is my final garter! I know - Estoy como loca por el Morado! :P }

Basically, I used one piece of two meter long fabric and sewed a “sandwich” ribbon to it in the center. After that I ran elastic through the center, pulled it through, and there was my garter!! I added little clay flowers and leaves with different small pieces of green ribbon.

I always understand tutorials better when I see pictures of the process, but this time (because it was my very first project) I forgot to take pictures, so I drew out my process to show you all! A Garter Toss and a Tutorial : wedding accessories diy tutorial Wink02 wink02

A Garter Toss and a Tutorial : wedding accessories diy tutorial Garter First, I sewed the edges of the fabric, and folded the ends like in the drawing above. I used a fancy stitch so it would look “cooler”, but if you don’t know how to work those stitches, you can just go with a plain stitch.

A Garter Toss and a Tutorial : wedding accessories diy tutorial Garter 01 After you have your ends done, you need to make a “sandwich” with two pieces of ribbon and your fabric. IMPORTANT: Don’t put the elastic in until you’re done sewing! I just drew it there so you can see where it goes.

In order to keep the layers in place, secure them with clothespins. Then, proceed to sew the edges as shown in the upper drawing.

A Garter Toss and a Tutorial : wedding accessories diy tutorial Garter 02 After you’re done with sewing the edges, run the elastic through like in the drawing, pull it, and tie both ends. Remember to measure the elastic on your leg, so it’s not too tight or too loose.

After that, you need to sew the front faces together and you’re done!! Sew or glue embellishments as desired. What I did was attach the flowers with different green ribbon! smile011

Will you be making your own garter? How are you embellishing it to make it your own?

More poodle fabulousness! We made our own too. They were flask garters and we kept it very simple.

That is gorgeous, and I honestly think your drawing is much easier to understand than had you shown it in pictures!! I’m planning on making my own and know my way around a sewing machine pretty well so I figured I would just make it up as I went, but now I don’t have to!
Thanks for showing us =]

Wow, that’s pretty awesome! I made my own garter too - http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff216/BecBennett/Wedding%20Planning/100_5315.jpg - but I’m not as good with a sewing machine as you are, so I just sewed a big ribbon in half (with some lace hidden inside) then I turned the whole thing inside out to hide my dodgy stitching, sewed the ends together and then added some embellishments.
