Farm Weddings

August 24th, 2009 @ 3:32 pm by Mrs. Chick

Today was a very exciting morning. I woke up, did pilates, had McDonald’s to cancel out calories lost during pilates, and discovered the amazingness of farm weddings.

Get ready for a visual overload. These dinners are done by a group named Outstanding in the Field. They tour around the world, working with chefs, setting up meals in natural settings, with their signature long white linen washed tables. They did one near Houston just outside of Brenham at Jolie Vue Farms. Unfortunately, Jolie Vue does not host weddings unless it’s for their own family members.

However, Outstanding in the Field does handle private events. At $180/head for their usual public events, I’d imagine private events are pretty pricey too. But if we have our wedding at a farm, perhaps the venue price would go down, and we can put that money towards good food.

Because of the the recent changes happening at the Wortham Center, we’re having second thoughts about where we should get married. Basically, they are heaping on a bunch of extra fees that we didn’t know about when we put our name down for the place. In addition, they totally changed what they said about the catering, which is frustrating, not to mention expensive. Thankfully, we didn’t need to put any money down to reserve the space. It’s still an option, and we may still have our wedding there. But as of right now, we are considering other places!

What do you think are the pros and cons of having a farm wedding? Bathrooms? Weather conditions? Animal disruptions? :P

Ticks, fleas, bugs? Cougars and bears (haha, maybe less likely).

The weddings sure are gorgeous though!!! I love the one in the trees. It seems so open and neat!!!

Wow - those are some long tables! That makes for awesome photos, and maybe it’s easy for the bride and groom to make their way down the table, but I don’t think I’d enjoy that as a guest!

My wedding was at an alpaca farm. We were on a patio, so no issues with grass, animals, or bugs. It made for great scenery, and the animals pretty much stayed away from our group.

I love these pictures!! My very good friends own and live on a farm and I really wanted to have my wedding on the farm and do it up real nice but my dad said no daughter of his was getting married on a farm :( I probably could have talked him into it if I really wanted but we found a great deal at a country club that has no rental fee! All we pay for is food and drinks :)

Holy canoli those are long tables! They do make for great pictures but not so much for mingling and conversation!

@arobb81: Hahah! Yes that is certainly a concern! Hopefully if we have it early enough there won’t be too many bugs. I will carry OFF with me at all times! The last time I went to visit a farm site for our wedding, I didn’t get any bug bites and it was in the dead of summer. I think that is a good sign…but we’ll see.

@mary-alice-me: those ARE long tables! I like the snake around serpentine tables—they’re so whimsical and I think would make for good conversation.

I am pretty sure that to have it an a vineyard, I would endure just about any negatives - that picture by the casks is FABULOUS! Unfortunately central Indiana is not full of vineyards, and the ones that I do know of aren’t large enough to host our 175 person guest list that is made up mostly of our very large families!

i love those tables and i think they are actually great for conversations, at least compared to regular round tables of 8-10. at round tables, you have the person to your left or right to converse with vs. at the rectangle tables where you have the people to your left, right and across from you.
thanks for the eye candy!
p.s. my biggest concern would be bathrooms and bugs.

I know its silly, but remember to consider smells that might waft over a fence. Nothing goes with wedding cake like wafting manure!

But I’m in love with the images!

My cousin had her wedding and reception outside. It was really humid in KC that weekend and it had rained all week so the chairs sunk into the ground when we sat for dinner. I found it to be entertaining and laughed a lot. Drinks helped! The bride and groom were so happy that they didn’t care, but weather was the biggest concern. Bug candles were part of the centerpieces and they had 3 bathrooms in her grandma’s house plus 2 porta potties (classy). :)

I LOVE how long those tables are! They go forever! And oh my gosh though, $180/ head! But I do love how that reminds me of Father of the Bride now :)

These pictures look pretty. I’ve been to one wedding on a farm. One word: ALLERGIES! I had to leave that wedding because the hay and grass were driving my allergies crazy. So I would have Claritin readily available or forewarn your guests on a wedding website.

wow! those pictures are definitely swoon worthy!!! I LOVE the long tables and the outside. My FI grew up on a farm in England and those all remind me of his parents house. What an amazing venue that would be!

We had a farm wedding and had dragonflies zooming around, fish jumping, and frogs croaking.
So i wouldn’t have changed anything.
HOWEVER they told us after the fact that they had one ceremony where the donkeys in the field ehind them were getting it on THE ENTIRE TIME.
