Flower Lights

August 25th, 2009 @ 3:05 pm by Mrs. Chick

Thanks to Lulu, who sent me this link! These are a nice alternative to the naked bulbs you see in most weddings these days.

While I like the simplicity and the industrial feel of the bulbs, I think these lights make the atmosphere a little more Secret Garden-esque!

To make flower fairy lights you will need:

  • Fairy lights
  • Vellum paper in a variety of colours
  • Scissors

Method:

  1. Cut 15cm squares of vellum paper in a variety of colors. You will need two or three squares of paper for each fairy light. Fold paper square in half diagonally to form a triangle.
  2. Fold the left and right corners up to meet at the center, forming a diamond shape. Fold in half to form a small triangle. [see image above]
  3. Cut curves along the open edges to form a heart-shaped top and create the petal effect. You might like to choose different petal shapes for each color. Layering them, the variety of shapes will add depth.
  4. Cut across the bottom point to create a small opening to slip the light bulb through. Unfold.
  5. Layer a few paper petals in different colors on each fairy light. Attach the flowers above the bulb on the plastic wire so the bulb is left exposed.

While vellum paper is a lot less flammable than ordinary paper, don’t leave the lights on unattended.

Have you seen any great ways to spice up twinkly lights for a wedding?

I am so impressed by all of these type of paper cutting & folding projects!! I know there is no way that I could actually make them happen, though, and that frustrates me! I just don’t have the patience for it :( These are so cute!

These look great! But how do you keep the paper from falling off, specially if it is windy and while you put up the lights in case you are using a lot of them? Has anybody tried them yet?
