The Best Bridesmaid Gift Ever…

August 25th, 2009 @ 2:04 pm by Mrs. Star

… is not making them dress like this:

Okay, Star Bridesmaids! This is your cue to skedaddle if you happen to be reading today.

Peace. Sayonara. Hasta la vista. Ciao.

So, I figured I should probably get my bridesmaids a little something other than a considerate dress choice, since I love them all so much. :)

They’ve each done a lot of DIY project pitching-in, emotional consolation, or organizational legwork throughout the course of our two-year engagement. They are some rockin’ ladies.

First, I wanted to get them clutches that looked like they went together, but weren’t too matchy-matchy. I also wanted my ladies to be able to use them post- wedding! I discovered that (once again), my criteria made it tough to find them in stores, so I turned to my trusty standby: Etsy, of course!

I put out another alchemy request for five bridesmaid clutches that were coordinating, but still fit the individual personalities of each of my ladies, and this is what I ended up with:

They. Are. Gorgeous. Seriously, this picture doesn’t do them justice. In person, the fabric is so luxurious and they are just beautiful. When I got them in the mail, I really wanted to keep one. I had them made with the accent color in a bold version of a color that I know each lady loves. Fairy Bridesmaid, for example, has always loved yellow, so her clutch has a pop of yellow.

But I also wanted to give them something more personal that came from my heart. So I wrote each of them sonnets (yes, in verse! see, that theatre degree DOES come in handy!) on coordinating cardstock and using my new found calligraphy skillz!

I love how fun they all look together:

And then I new I wanted to wrap everything up in an adorable little package, because I know that sometimes a beautiful package is almost as much fun as the gift itself.

So I trolled the dollar store (it’s Jack’s 99 Cent Store here in NYC) for weeks until they put these gorgeous black and white damask bags out and I snatched up five of them. Score! I splurged on some expensive scalloped pink tissue paper and found some adorable pink Christmas ornaments that say “bridesmaid” on them to hang on the outsides of the bags. I’m thinking about trying to personalize the ornaments by writing their names on them, but I’m not sure how to do it yet on a glazed ceramic ornament. Ideas are welcome!

Altogether, the packing looks like this:

I can’t WAIT to give these to my girls. Not only do I love their clutches, but the whole package will look so cute and I spent some mucho time on writing a whole sonnet about each of my girls and making it all pretty with calligraphy! I love gifts, both giving and receiving, and I think I’m more excited about giving these to my girls than they are about finding out what they are!

What are you giving your girls to thank them? Did you make the gifts, buy them, or do a combination of both?

Such a great idea! Do you mind sharing the name of the Etsy seller you used for the clutches? Thanks!

Those are so so cute!!! Your clutches just gave me the final touch I need for my flap I believe.

And as far as the ornament goes…. a fine tooth sharpie marker will work. I’ve been personalizing ornaments for 5 years at the gift store I work at. Just make sure you don’t touch them immediately following or they will smear. But they do dry very quickly!

You can use a Sharpie marker - has to be Sharpie though. We use them on Christmas ornaments and it works with no problem.

Those clutches are so stinking cute, I got my girls pashminas, tote bags monogrammed with their initials, and I think I’m going to get them some black pearl necklaces as well

I’m convinced I’m still going to try making the clutches that Mrs Peep Toe made… I know I can do it, just a matter of doing it!

Super cute gift!! I love the clutches and the sonnets are adorable!!

I gave the girls their dresses that they wore in the wedding along with pashminas (it was a winter wedding), clutches, bracelettes and a professional make-up application on the day of for those who were interested. I wish I could have made something as cute as you had but instead I had to buy everything due to my DIYing everything else and running out of time!

The sonnet idea is super cute, and something that I know I would really cherish. I agree that a sharpie should work fine for the ornament.

Love it! I was at a recent wedding where the bride gave the girls purses… that matched their horrible green bridesmaid dresses!
I felt so bad that they had to wear that color nevertheless be given a “gift” of the matching purse.
Your gift is so great and I love how you went above and beyond (as they probably have done during the planning process) to make everything special.
You’re great!

I love those clutches! I knew I wanted to give my ladies something practical that they can use post wedding. So I ordered them LL Bean totes, and had their names monogramed on them. I splurged and got the large tote since many of them are already moms, and are always on the go, and who doesn’t love a monogrammed bag!

oh my! I loooooove those clutches! And the sonnets are so sweet! Way to work your degree (no worries - as someone who nearly majored in Latin … I understand that sometimes you wonder “what was i thinking”) Anyway - yeah, a sharpie will most definitely work on the ornaments!

Those are such cute gifts! Do the clutches match their dresses? I can’t remember.

For writing on the little ornament, you could use a Sharpie, and if that doesn’t work, a Sharpie paint pen. =)
