I was born and raised in a small East Texas town, but I'm no country girl! I'm obsessed with British accents, fantasy (including Harry Potter, of course), and classic rock. My fiance and I consider ourselves both music and beer snobs--but every once in awhile we love to hear a crappy band and drink a cheap brew or two. We're planning an eco-friendly, casual, English garden affair for the end of summer, and we can't wait for it to get here!

Decking the Aisle

August 26th, 2009 @ 2:04 pm by Mrs. Mouse

We’re keeping our ceremony decor sweet and simple. There’s no need to drop thousands of dollars on florals when you’re already getting married in a beautiful garden.

After our first meeting with our florist, we had decided on hydrangea pomanders tied with black ribbon to hang in the aisle, as well as one large garland to drape over the archway, which will be behind us during the ceremony. The garland will be very natural—filled with lots of greenery, hanging amaranthus, and cream garden roses.

The more I thought about the hydrangea balls, the more I thought they didn’t really fit in with our aesthetic. I came across some amazing inspiration photos right here on the Weddingbee Boards, and a new idea was born:

mint julep cups!

I know mint juleps are sort of a Southern thing, but the image of hydrangeas in these dainty cups would really complement the English Garden theme (I use the term loosely) of our wedding. Can’t you just imagine them hooked onto the back of a chair with lush, green-and-pink hydrangeas fluffing out?

I started searching the internet (where else?) for affordable mint julep cups. Plastic versions abounded, but I thought they might look cheap in person. I hit up eBay but found nothing but super-expensive heirloom cups. Finally, I tried the Weddingbee Classifieds and ended up with six silver-plated mint julep cups for a very reasonable price. However, when I received them in the mail, I started to freak out; they were really heavy! Were the chairs going to hold their weight? And how in the hell was I going to attach the cups to the chairs? Because they didn’t have a lip, there was nothing to twist a wire or a piece of twine around.

I put the cups aside and went on to worrying about more pressing tasks. Cut to yesterday. I started freaking out about this project again, so I tried looking for some type of clips to attach to the cups that would hang from the backs of the chairs. I found a few potentials online, then decided to go to Jo-Ann’s to see what they looked like in person. Unfortunately, Jo-Ann’s didn’t have the “pew clips”, as they are called, so it was back to panicking. I decided to email my florist, who as I have said before, is part of the Barr Mansion team.

This is the reply I got, four minutes later:

I am SURE I can attach them to the chairs—you let me worry about that. Just drop off the cups and I’ll do the rest. :)

Thanks!!

Um, awesome! Wedding stress officially avoided. Ceremony decor: check!

Do you ever get to the point where a simple wedding task seems completely insurmountable?

Those julep cups with hydrangeas are just too adorable and pretty! Well chosen, madam.

Lately it seems like so many tiny wedding decisions turn into huge mountains of stress for me. I have to consciously tell myself to back away, it’s going to be okay. :p

Hooray for helpful vendors! My moment of “oh my gosh how will this ever work” involved paper lanters with battery tea lights inside. I couldn’t figure out how to keep the tea lights inside when we hung them. Thankfully my florist did the same thing..I’ll make it happen just drop them off. And she did. :) Again…love helpful vendors!

I’m so in love with the theme of your wedding! I know my bridesmaids are planning a bridal shower with an english garden tea party theme, so I’m so excited to see how everything turns out so I can send some of your posts for inspiration! I already sent a couple!

Those are so cute! For awhile I was set on having galvanized tins like that with hydrangeas but then we decided to forgo that cost and I made my own pew bows instead that will get one spider mum in the center.

Oooh… what a good idea! I like the idea of decorating the backs of the chairs, instead of decorating the edge chairs along the aisle. I hadn’t thought of that before. Thanks for the inspiration!

One really great way to have the mint julep cup look without spending a bunch of money or having a bunch of heavy metal cups afterwards is to go to a restaurant supply store (or online) and look for martini shakers. They sell just the bottom of shakers (to be coupled with a glass) that you see so frequently at bars. The added bonus is that the metal is thinner than mint julep cups so you can punch the metal (take it to Home Depot or somewhere similar) and that will allow you to thread the cups with ribbon.

They are also heavy enough (and weighted properly) so if you don’t want to hang but just use them as vessels on the table, they won’t tip over.
