While I spent much of the last weekend recovering, I did manage to accomplish one wedding related task - my veil. Before setting out on making a veil as described in my last post on this topic, I decided to visit another vintage store I’d walked past after dinner one night downtown.
While a lot of the vintage stores in Cape Town are ravaged by fashion scouts for magazines, who take most of the good stuff for their shoots, this particular store was a well-stocked treasure trove. Not only did I find two beautiful vintage wedding dresses (which I swore I wouldn’t look at a second longer, for fear of considering trying them on), but I also found a variety of gloves, stoles, coats and VEILS!
Trying them on in the store, I suddenly felt that a vintage piece was exactly what I needed to complete my ensemble. I even found a gray/silver feather boa in the exact shade of my dress (but don’t worry, I left that behind).
In the end, I settled on buying one item only. And here she is… a vintage 1920s hat and silver veil.

It needs some work (the veil needs to be attached to the hat properly and the glue has yellowed, so I’m going to cover those areas with ribbon), but I think this accessory really carries some history with it which I love, and I think it gives my whole outfit a vintage feel even though everything else is pretty much new.
However, the story of the veil doesn’t end here. Last week I was a lucky winner of a birdcage veil giveaway held by local wedding blog. The site coordinator informed me that it would be sent by mail this week, so hopefully it will arrive just in time (I say this because our post offices have been on strike and half of oru wedding invitations were lost in the mail, even with return addresses).
So now I’m a two veil bride! And thank goodness for that, because even though my beloved vintage hat will be making an appearance, I’ve mainly chosen it for my daytime portraits with Mr Lightning, as it isn’t really suitable for an evening ceremony (and needs to be carefully pinned to stay on my head). The birdcage veil I’ve won is far more delicate and appropriate for when we say our vows. However, I’ve yet to see it in person so I’m glad to have a backup option, too.
And then to finish off the night, I’ll be donning my beautiful flower headpiece.
Are you wearing several headpieces throughout the night? Why did you decide to wear more than one?
