Flower Centerpieces

August 26th, 2009 @ 9:24 am by Miss Chick

It’s not in our budget to have flower centerpieces, and we (I) decided early on that we would do lace vellum luminaries a la Martha Stewart. Click here for DIY instructions.

But once again, Once Wed has me hooked and drooling. Flower Market Centerpieces courtesy of Once Wed:

Peonies are my all time favorite flower. However, since they are pretty pricey, I was thinking of substituting them with ranunculus.

Are you taking on any DIY flower projects? What flowers are you going to tackle on your own for your wedding?

I love those paper luminaries.

We DIYed our bouquets, using tulips, ranunculus, mini carnations and mini calla lilies. They turned out great and we saved a ton of money!

I love those peony centerpieces! The silver buckets would go beautifully with your farm theme!

I love the paper luminaries as well. We had floral centerpieces but I was able to snag some amazing containers at a fraction of the cost (on sale at Smith and Hawken) which save us a bit of money. Either way you go, these are both beautiful arrangements.

those luminaries are gorgous, and I drooooooool over peonies. I am having some ranunculus. A lot of people DIY their flowrs, but when I looked into it, my time was worth more than the money saved with planning a wedding from afar. The work that goes into DIY flower centerpieces wasnt something I wanted to tackle, so we went the florist route. We did make some of those Martha Luminaries as well though! We’re lining the walkway to our venue with them, theyre GORGEOUS

Once wed is totally good for that, right? But they are cute and sweet and perfect! These will look great! I plan to DIY all of my flowers, personally, so I love hearing other people doing that as well!

If you can get the lace pattern into Microsoft Word 2007 you might be able to change the color using picture tools. Other than that you might need photoshop or another editing software.

i loooove those market flower centrepieces! gorgeous!
i would just add, that even though the ranunculus are cheaper, they are waaaaay smaller than a peony blossom, which might mean needing more of them…you get where i am going, right?
…but maybe i am just trying to justify the additional costs, cause *droooooool*!!!

The paper luminaries are beautiful and so unique. If I wasn’t already stealing DIY paper oragami cherry blossoms from Miss Poodle, I might consider it. They are fabulous!

I don’t know if artificial flowers is an option for you, but I ordered fake peonies from http://www.afloral.com and have been THRILLED with the quality and how real they look. Just a suggestion to help you get what you want!

Hey Miss Chick, have you looked into garden/cabbage roses as a substitute for peonies? They look VERY similar and are about 1/3 the price.
I am mixing up our table centerpieces with luminaries and flowers. Could that be an option for you, too?

I fells uper hard for ranunculus because I thought they’d be cheaper than peonies, but when I visited a local florist the other day I was told they are super expensive and because a bouquet of just them would require many, it works out super expensive :( I’m going to look at a couple of other shops as well to see if I could get a better deal!

Those luminaries are beautiful!

Wow! I’m overwhelmed with all your great ideas!! Thanks guys!
@woodentulip:
That is a good point! I need to do some math now.
@abrideagain:
I just looked at their website! Fab! I might order a couple of different ones just to get a feel of them.
@Champagne Wishes:
This is awesome! I just googled cabbage rose and they are so similar!! And can you believe it I didn’t even think of mixing up centerpieces but now I think tha’ts a great idea! Are you going to have some tables with just luminaries and others with just peonies, or combine both in one table?
@Miss Chicken:
So I also contacted a local flower farm about ranunculas and their price quote for me was about $1.30 a stem. May I ask if that’s comparable to your quote?

Thanks y’all!

Miss Chick, if you’re looking for something that is comparable to the peony in size, I would try a dahlia. Ranunculus are going to be much smaller and therefore you will need more to get the “full” overflowing look.

The luminaries are beautiful! Maybe you can do both luminaries and flowers so you need to purchase less flowers?

Those flowers and luminaries are wonderful!! I’m also doing my own flowers but waiting to see whats in season before deciding… what I wouldn’t give for peonies (they’re hard to come by in South Africa). Good luck with your diy flowers!

I used that exact lace pattern to make those wine glass lamp shade thingers. They turned out great! I was able to easily change the lace color in paint.net, a free alternative to Photoshop.

Love both of these! You may be able to afford flowers if you want them- you just need to shop around! Check out WeddingBook.com for florists in all price ranges… you just might be suprised!

I also have one other suggestion- paper flowers! Paper Source has some great templaates that are easy to make- you could buy your own paper for the most part, but I’ve made some from around the house and they look great!

Good luck!

Could you do one luminarie in the center and do two buckets of flowers on either side? Then you would get the best of both worlds :)

I loooove those centerpieces! My sister got married a couple months ago and she DIYed her flowers, she wanted Peonies as well, but they were way to expensive for her budget, so she substituted them for roses in different colors (multicolor theme). She saved a lot of money, and it was easy to put them together. All her wedding flowers were unbeliavably beautiful…..I want the same on my wedding (next year btw). I think she got all her flowers from Rose Source.com.

When I saw those lacy luminaries in Martha Stewart Weddings, I immediately cut them out for inspiration, I think they look so beautiful!
