About Mrs. Joey

The Ban

August 26th, 2009 @ 5:56 pm by Mrs. Joey

During the planning process, I neglected a lot of things — cooking, cleaning, me. All my free time went into crafting things for the wedding. Our apartment turned into craft central. I don’t think we saw the surface of our living room table for months.

On the flight back from Sydney, I asked Mr. Joey if he was excited to get back to normal. He enthusiastically said he was. He was looking forward to a very tidy apartment, pre-planned meals, and me not crafting while we were watching a movie. I agreed. Then he said he had a request, but that I may not like it—he wanted to ban crafting for an entire month. I thought about it. On the one hand, I couldn’t think of a craft project I was ready to take on immediately, but on the other hand, well, you never know. After some thought, I agreed. No crafting from August 18 - September 18.

Mr. Joey said that cooking is not crafting.

So I can make jam, pickles or limoncello. Cleaning and organizing is not crafting, unless I make something pretty to use for organizing, like the jewelry stand I need. Designing posters and stationery is crafting, but he said his band won’t be playing a gig until October, so there are no worries about that. (Poop!) He did say planning for post-October 18th crafts are fine.

I did manage to find a loophole in the crafting ban - projects he participates in. We are in desperate need of wine storage. We had tons of wine leftover from the wedding, and were given quite a bit as wedding presents. We also brought back 4 bottles from Australia. We have 3 boxes of wine sitting in our hall. We’ve looked at wine racks and mini bars, but haven’t seen anything we like that we can afford.

The other day I was cruising the Apartment Therapy site and found the perfect wine storage project. I sent it to Mr. Joey, and he loved it. He said he wanted to try it this weekend. But what about the ban? Well, he said that this isn’t a craft. He doesn’t craft, so if he participates, it isn’t a craft, but a home improvement project. Yeah, I don’t understand either, but I’m excited. This is going to look great in our current apartment and in our new home.

Now that the wedding is over, I’ve deleted all the wedding inspiration pictures on my laptop, unsubscribed to all wedding blogs but one (I’ll let you guess which), and agreed to a 1-month craft ban.

What wedding related habits, collections, or activities are you going to nix post-wedding?

My husband tries to tell me I can’t go on Weddingbee now that I’m married, but you know that’s a losing battle (for him!). :)

I allllways wonder if I will be over Wedding Blogs after the wedding… I meet so many girls on here who are all ready married and have been for some time… and although I’m obsessed with all this wedding shinanigans now, I wonder if I still will be after the fact. Just sent the wine holder thing to my fiance, we need one too!

Wow, that wine wall looks awesome! I just keep thinking about craftsman style homes, or the Craftsman brand of tools at Sears…

Post-wedding, I think I took a brief break but my Weddingbee habit is worse than ever!

That is the coolest wine rack and I can’t wait to see what yours turns out like.
We’re not wine people at all, but if we were, I would totally make one of these! Talk about wall art =]

Wow, I’m impressed–I saw that on Apartment Therapy, too.

Honestly, my WB addiction is probably much worse than it was pre-wedding. I guess I just have more extra time than I did before, when i was busy working on wedding projects.

I’m really glad that there is a distinction between home improvement projects and crafts. I’d support any distinction that would let you continue to enjoy your projects! The pictures look beautiful - good luck!

Mrs. Joey, your post made me laugh. That sounds just like my husband to put a “ban on crafting”… too funny!! I definitely went through a crafting withdrawal after my wedding, so good luck! :)

Oh, good! I’m not the only one whose home has gone to complete hell-in-a-handbasket during the pre-wedding period!

That wine rack is rockin’ … but I don’t understand why your husband would ban crafting?? Does he get annoyed by it or something? (I am not really into crafting stuff so I have no clue what impact it would have on a relationship!)

I hope we get a tutorial on the wine rack! I’d love to know how you craft, er, build it.

@peanutlovespumpkin: He’s annoyed really. It’s just that the apartment had been taken over by crafts for 4 solid months. Almost every moment we spent together in the apartment involved me crafting. He’d just like time when we just hung out without paper poms or stationary :).

That’s such a funny request! But I do understand that grooms can be victims of post-wedding “no more wedding cr#p, anything remotely wedding-related, or anything that REMINDS me of the wedding planning process” period that we all go through. ;-)

Btw, that’s such an impressive wine rack! I remember seeing it on AT and wishing we had enough wine bottle for it. Will you be posting pictures of the finished project?

Oh gosh, I am relieved to read this post. My wedding projects have taken over one entire room (literally there is nothing else in this room but wall to wall wedding stuff!), the kitchen table, and some of the counters in the kitchen. Even *I* am getting sick of seeing our wedding stuff everywhere. I plan my crafts at work, and then when I come home I craft, I craft in between while making dinner, after dinner, during commercial breaks, during movies, I leave our friends’ house early to come home and craft, and then I craft so more. My FI hasn’t really said anything about it but I can tell that he gets disappointed when all my time is taken up by crafts! My dinners have gone from casseroles and other homemade dishes to Hamburger Helper and frozen meals I can stick in the oven. I just figure I’m in the home stretch so in a couple weeks, there will be no more wedding crafts!! I start school again in the fall so I think it’s safe to say that any non-wedding crafts after the wedding will be minimal since my focus will be on school. Thanks for sharing about your ban, it’s comforting to know there are other bees who suffer from craft-overload like me ;)

LOL my husband instituted a WeddingBee ban (”you spend more time on that site than with me!!”), which lasted all of a week!

he says no crafting, but i’m still at it, working on Thank You cards :P

could you share the progress on the wine rack, please?

Haha, crafting ban. I love that when Mr. Joey participates it’s not a craft. Hehe. That wine rack is awesome! I can’t wait to see how yours turns out.
