Dressing Up My Hair

August 27th, 2009 @ 12:25 pm by Mrs. Dew Drop

It never really occurred to me to wear a veil for our wedding. Maybe this is obvious—as I’ve mentioned before, I’m wearing my wedding dress for the reception only. I’ll be wearing a sari for the ceremony. And although I could pull the pallu (loose end) of my sari over my head to keep covered during the ceremony, I’m not sure I feel comfortable doing that. I mean, I just got used to wearing a sari with the pallu over my shoulder. It’s better not to jinx things, right?

Since my hair will be uncovered, I thought it would be nice to dress it up a little bit. Surprise, surprise: when I bought my dress, I noticed that the bridal salon had a large selection of hair accessories. (A bridal salon selling bridal hair accessories? Who knew??) I filed that away for future reference and started to look online while waiting for my dress to come in.

Originally I thought I might like a headband of some sort.

Something like this:

Or this:

Tiara Headband ANS-A7620 by Hair Comes the Bride

Then I thought I might want something a little more dramatic (and in our wedding colors!):

Dressing Up My Hair : wedding accessories hair Turquoi turquoi

Turquoise Mist by Twigs & Honey

Or maybe something like this?

Dressing Up My Hair : wedding accessories hair Flouris flouris

But I’m pretty petite and had a nagging fear that I’d look like a flower swallowed my head.

So clearly I had to go to the opposite extreme and look for really small hair accessories like so:

I Do by thebitsybean

In a fit of horrible indecisiveness (read: my default state), I thought I’d try making a hair flower myself. Something like this:

Awesome DIY Hair Flower by Mrs. Pineapple

But I already have one or two (or possibly three or four…) DIY projects that haven’t gotten done yet. And what do I know about making hair flowers?

And then I got a call, the call, that my dress was in. So I made an appointment, tried on the dress, and asked the consultant to bring me a bunch of hair accessories to try on with it.

The second one she brought me was perfect. Success!

Want to see it?

First, the bag shot:

How excited am I? Check out that really unsteady camera work!

And, voila: the perfect hair accessory!

What do you think?

Are you wearing a hair accessory for the big day? Where did you get it from? And did it take you a long time to pick it out?

my evolution of hair accessories has driven my sisters and mum nuts. i ultimately settled on a bi-colored hair flower that’s being made as we speak! it’s a surprise. that’s in addition to the veil of course. i also have another piece for my second dress which is a red and white kanzashi comb. it’s gorgeous!

i love headbands…but I’ve yet to attend a wedding where the bride wore one–I think they’re so pretty and ethereal!

Oh gosh I love it! I tried on a sparkly, feather-y hair accessory when I ordered my gown. We didn’t end up getting it because neither my mother or I were in love with it… for different reasons! Although she doesn’t know it, the feathers that she didn’t like were the part I loved and wanted more of as opposed to more sparkle! My dress is sparkly enough on its own that I think a hair accessory with tons of sparkle might be a bit much.

You did a great job on the DIY flower! I have enough DIY projects on my plate (sad day) so I know I won’t have time to make one like you did! I want to order the Flourish, I think!

I got a couple. I still don’t know what I’m gonna wear: I have one from Myra Kim, but think it might be a bit big for me. Then I found this lovely etsy site and got this:

She has some whimsical headbands that I love.

Your DIY flower is beautiful too!

I def think dressing up the hair is a good idea. If you want to continue with the Indian look, maybe consider something somewhat Indian? My stylist had the idea of intertwining some necklaces in the up do, and I was super happy with the look…though I had other issues with her not pinning it up securely enough. I’m looking for an example photo…but if you are interested you could PM me and I could look harder.

Otherwise I’m liking the rhinestone rather than the feathers for some reason.

I Love the one from Twigs & Honey! I’m wearing a Muscari flower in my hair, but now I’m having second thoughts and may need to make something like that…

I wore a hair flower…like everybody else. But hey it looked cute, & I love yours. I love the Jennifer Behr “headwrap” so much, I may have to buy one myself! I hope they have it in black.
