Outdoor Chandeliers

August 28th, 2009 @ 11:57 am by Mrs. Chick

I was looking for ideas on how to make chic and cheap (my two favorite words these days) chandeliers to hang from trees for the wedding. Something like this:

Lulu once again has come to the rescue!

Images below thanks to Craftstylist and Jeffery Rudell! You can read the entire tutorial there. These were hanging in the holiday windows of Tiffany & Co.

The finished piece prior to its installation. Not a droopy candle or limp-looking scroll to be found.

Instead of the cut-out candles, I thought we would replace them with these:

I’m sure you can get them dirt cheap. The ones I found are 6 candles for $5 here but we might be able to find them cheaper somewhere else.

How hard do you think this will be to make on my own? I don’t quite understand how he makes the curved cuts so smoothly by hand. Hmmm.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it will be difficult. Your finger will be sore after cutting through so many layers of cardstock that’s thick enough to hold itself up. And the chandeliers will probably not hold the weight of those fake votives though. If you give it a try, I’d definitely find something lighter to put in them. It costs almost nothing to try it out though, so give it a shot.

You’ll need some super sharp scissors, or maybe an exacto knife? good luck, sounds ambitious but I look forward to your results.

I know, this project looks very daunting! Fortunately, I still have all my calluses from architecture school, although I’m sure my fingers are still going to fall off. We’ll see!

Miss Chick, I have been lusting over chandeliers myself. I can’t wait to see how this project works out for you!

This is a great idea but does look kind of complicated. Let us know how the process goes!

It is worth a try. They are so beautiful. He only made one, though? Would you make more than one?
I went on the website and Jeffrey said that it was a failure because what he got paid to make it didn’t make up for how much he spent and the time it took. The time will take is something to consider Miss Chick.

It definitely sounds like a TON of work, but do-able! I think it’s a really cool idea and would look fantastic. Recruit some of your ladies to help you, for sure.

I’d also hazard a guess that the cardstock might not hold the fake votives, but it would look so awesome if it worked. Try it out! We bought some really cheap votives in bulk off of Ebay.

Ok, Lulu and I will try it next weekend. Hopefully by the end of it I will still have enough fingers left to let you guys know how it goes :P!!
Well, let’s see. I have 8 months until the wedding. Maybe I can make one per week. Hahahah!

What a fabulous look! I have a book with instructions for DIY chandeliers out of copper tubing. It would be study enough to hold the LED votives while withstanding any humidity issues. :o)

I loooove the look of chandeliers hanging from trees. I’m fortunate enough that my venue owner does too, and she has several that I can use for our decor.

Do you know anyone that has a cricut? (Sorry, I’m newly cricut obsessed, so any cut paper project I see I automatically consider how I can use it!) The larger model should be able to cut cardstock large enough (up to 12″x24″) If you can lay out the template in illustrator then you can easilly let it do the cutting for you.

If it seems too daunting, there may be some rental companies that will rent real chandeliers out for a very small cost.

I know that there are paper ones you can buy at Halloween stores… maybe you could buy one of them to either use as a template. Or maybe buy them and add some reinforcements (cardstock or foam board) to them so they can support your tealights. If you reinforce them then you can always add some acrylic crystal strands or make some strands out of paper to get a better effect. Good luck - I can’t wait to hear how they turn out!

I am drooling over those chandeliers. A-MAZ-ING!

If you are going to undertake making the chandeliers, I wish you luck, but also use thinner paper. Foam core or cardstock will give you headaches and you’ll never get great curves.

I think that you can totally do this if you give yourself enough time. My suggestion for the curved parts is to make a teplate out of SUPER heavy cardstock. That way you can just follow along the shape with an exacto knife. Good luck!!!

@Jennarationnext: I’m so curious about the cricut! Can you rent them? They’re a bit expensive to buy, right?

yeeps that looks difficult. If you make these you should totally sell them on Etsy!
